Linux kernel 6.2 was released on 19 February 2023. Its notable changes included TCP Protective Load Balancing (PLB), an IPv6-only host-side TCP optimization, and incremental improvements to Rust development support. PLB is not a general-purpose IPv6 load balancer, and the Rust work did not make Rust drivers a routine end-user option.

What is Linux kernel 6.2?

Linux 6.2 is a historical kernel release, not a statement about which kernel is current today. The release date was 19 February 2023. Its features covered networking, filesystems, block-device controls, BPF, runtime verification, and kernel development infrastructure.

The examples below are selected highlights from the Linux Kernel Newbies release summary, rather than a complete list of changes.

What is TCP Protective Load Balancing?

TCP Protective Load Balancing (PLB) is a host-side TCP optimization intended to reduce uneven link use across data-center switches. When transport congestion signals, such as ECN, indicate congestion on a connection, PLB can randomly choose another path for that connection. It aims to help redistribute flows; it does not replace switch-side routing or guarantee higher throughput in every network. Linux Kernel Newbies’ Linux 6.2 summary describes its mechanism and goals.

Why does PLB use IPv6?

The Linux 6.2 implementation changes a connection’s IPv6 Flow Label to prompt a path change, and the feature described for this release works only with IPv6 traffic. It is therefore not a mechanism for balancing all IPv6 packets independently of TCP connections.

PLB prefers to change paths after idle periods, which can limit packet reordering compared with changing paths while packets are actively in flight. The release summary describes the intended behavior, not a universal performance result.

What changed in Rust support in Linux 6.2?

Rust support had entered mainline Linux before 6.2. This release continued the developer-infrastructure work, with changes in strings and formatting, error handling, printing, memory allocation, macros, vocabulary types, and debugging. These are building blocks for kernel development, not evidence that a broad set of production-ready Rust drivers was available to ordinary users.

The versioned Linux 6.2 Rust documentation describes Rust as an optional build capability and sets toolchain requirements. Kernel Rust depends on unstable language features, so a newer compiler is not necessarily compatible; builders should follow the version-specific guidance rather than assume any installed Rust toolchain will work.

What else was notable in the release?

The Linux Kernel Newbies summary also points to several other areas of work:

  • Btrfs: reliability and performance changes for RAID56.
  • Block devices: five sysfs controls for more fine-grained writeback control.
  • BPF: support for user-defined BPF objects.
  • Runtime verification: the rv tool.

The same community-maintained summary attributes roughly 5–10% lower power consumption from RCU requests to timer-based RCU callback batching, also called lazy callbacks, on lightly loaded or idle Android and ChromeOS devices. The option is controlled through Kconfig and defaults off. That figure is specific to the stated devices and workload context, not a general battery-life claim.

What should kernel builders know about configuration?

Kernel configuration can change with every release. The versioned Linux 6.2 build guide explains that make oldconfig reuses an existing configuration and asks about new configuration symbols. The guide states: “Do not skip this step even if you are only upgrading one minor version.” Rust remains optional and has separate toolchain requirements.

This is guidance for people building kernels. It does not, by itself, give every distribution user a reason to install this historical version manually.

Is Linux kernel 6.2 still current?

No: 6.2 should be treated as a past release, not described as the latest kernel. The kernel.org archive index lists Linux 6.2.16 with a date of 17 May 2023. That archive entry establishes the date of that 6.2 maintenance release; it does not establish present-day distribution support or maintenance status.
