Linux 6.2-rc1 was tagged on December 25, 2022, as an early development milestone—not a current kernel release announcement. Its reported highlights included an accelerator framework without drivers yet, graphics enablement work for Intel and nouveau, and x86 Linear Address Masking (LAM), a hardware feature intended to help userspace memory sanitizers run with less overhead on supported systems.

What Linux 6.2-rc1 means

The upstream Git tag v6.2-rc1 identifies the release candidate and lists Linus Torvalds as its tagger. It was created on December 25, 2022, at 13:41:39 US Pacific time (21:41:39 UTC). A release candidate is a development version on the way to a final release; the date and tag do not mean it is a newly released or current kernel today.

The highlights below come from subsystem merge summaries, which describe selected work rather than every change in the kernel. They indicate development-cycle enablement, not complete support guarantees for every product or configuration.

What changed for graphics and GPUs?

An accelerator framework entered the graphics stack

In his December 13, 2022 DRM pull summary for 6.2-rc1, maintainer Dave Airlie called the accelerator subsystem framework the biggest highlight. He also stressed that it had no drivers at that point, adding: “Hopefully for 6.3 we will be able to line up a driver to use it.” The framework’s arrival therefore did not itself provide a usable accelerator driver.

Intel and nouveau enablement

The same summary said Intel’s i915 driver enabled DG2 support by default and nouveau gained initial acceleration support for Ampere GPUs. These are meaningful development-cycle steps, but “initial” acceleration or default enablement should not be read as proof that every feature, device, or setup was complete.

Other reported graphics work

Airlie’s summary also listed AMD support for new hardware IP, ARM build support for AMD graphics, a new ofdrm driver intended to replace offb, Tegra234 NVDEC hardware support, Qualcomm SM6115 support, and display changes across multiple drivers. These are selected examples from the summary, not an exhaustive inventory or a compatibility list.

What was the CPU and x86 update?

The x86/mm pull summary reported new randomization of per-CPU entry areas and Linear Address Masking (LAM). It described LAM as conceptually similar to ARM Top-Byte-Ignore and said it “should allow userspace memory sanitizers to be used with less overhead on x86.” This is the stated intended benefit, not a reported benchmark: the summary does not quantify a performance gain or identify the processor models that support the feature.

Do these changes mean Linux 6.2 supports your hardware?

Not by themselves. The graphics summary reports particular driver-development changes, but it does not establish complete support for all products in a GPU family or every configuration. Likewise, the LAM summary does not provide a processor compatibility list. Check the documentation and support information for the specific kernel build and hardware you plan to use rather than treating a release-candidate highlight as a compatibility guarantee.

How complete is this list of changes?

It is selective. Two additional subsystem pull-summary extracts mention driver-core work including container_of_const(), and char/misc changes involving fastrpc, IIO, HabanaLabs, and slimbus. Those extracts provide too little context to explain the changes in detail. The release highlights here should not be mistaken for a complete changelog.
