At the center of the announcement was Open 3D Engine (O3DE), an updated version of Amazon Lumberyard contributed by AWS under the Apache 2.0 license. O3DF is the foundation; O3DE is the engine.
What is the Open 3D Foundation?
O3DF is a project within the Linux Foundation intended to support open-source projects in 3D graphics, rendering, authoring and development. Its purpose is organizational: to give companies and individual developers a shared place to contribute to technology and influence its direction, rather than leave the engine under the control of a single vendor.
The Linux Foundation’s 2021 announcement framed O3DF as a long-term, community-governed home for a major 3D engine. Its current overview describes O3DE as aimed at games, robotics, automotive, augmented and virtual reality, and other applications. Those are potential areas of use, not evidence that the engine has particular adoption levels or performance in each one.
Is O3DE the same as Amazon Lumberyard?
O3DE began with an updated version of Amazon Lumberyard that AWS contributed to the foundation. The announcement presented it as a community-oriented continuation of that codebase, renamed Open 3D Engine, rather than as an unrelated engine. AWS’s contribution does not mean that O3DF and O3DE are AWS products: the stated goal was to make the engine part of an open, multi-party project.

Who governs O3DF and O3DE?
The 2021 announcement described a governance structure intended to separate organizational decisions from technical direction and day-to-day community work.
- Governing Board: business and budget decisions.
- Technical Steering Committee: technical strategy and community management.
- Special Interest Groups: focused work on build and developer pipelines, simulation, content creation, network and cloud, presentation, documentation and demos, releases, security, and testing.
Linux Foundation CTO Chris Aniszczyk said the foundation would give developers an opportunity to influence the direction of a major AAA-class engine supported by a worldwide open-source community. That was the stated ambition at announcement; it should not be read as an independent assessment of the engine’s present maturity or commercial success.

Is O3DE open source, and what license does it use?
Yes. AWS contributed O3DE under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, as stated in the Linux Foundation announcement. The license is an important part of the announcement’s openness; it does not, by itself, guarantee a particular level of community participation, support, or product quality.

What does the announcement mean for developers?
The clearest significance is the proposed governance model: AWS supplied the initial engine code, while the foundation offered a structure through which multiple organizations and contributors could participate. AWS vice president of engineering Bill Vass also pointed to distributed cloud rendering as part of the broader opportunity for real-time 3D development.
For a developer deciding whether to use O3DE, the announcement establishes its origin, Apache 2.0 licensing and intended range of workloads. It does not establish how O3DE compares with another engine on rendering quality, workflow, performance, support or operational maturity. Those decisions require current project-specific evaluation; the launch materials are not a head-to-head benchmark.
