Pop!_OS automatic window tiling removed a small but recurring chore: deciding where to put each new app window. Instead of arranging windows by hand, the system moved and resized them as more apps opened. For PCWorld’s Alex Wawro, that meant less friction—not proof that Linux is better for everyone.
What frustration did Pop!_OS solve?
In a September 18, 2026, first-person account for PCWorld, Alex Wawro describes a familiar Windows habit: usually keeping one window maximized, or using at most two side by side, rather than choosing among more elaborate Windows 11 layouts.
After a colleague discussed testing a System76 laptop running Pop!_OS, Wawro encountered its automatic tiling feature. As new applications opened, the system automatically moved and resized the existing windows to make room. The practical change was that he no longer had to repeatedly decide where each window should go.
How much time did it save?
Wawro estimated that automatic placement saved him 5–10 seconds of thought and effort each time he launched a program. During the week he described, he estimated launching applications 10–20 times a day and saving around ten or fifteen minutes over the week. These are his personal estimates, not results from a controlled test or a measure of typical users’ productivity.

The point is less about a dramatic time saving than about removing a decision that recurs throughout the day. A few seconds can feel valuable when the action is frequent and the alternative is an interruption to whatever you were doing.

Why not just use Windows layouts?
Wawro says Windows 11 Snap Layouts offered more arrangement choices than he wanted to manage. He also mentions Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones as an option he did not usually use. His account is about his preferences; it does not compare the current capabilities or performance of those tools with Pop!_OS.

The distinction is the kind of work the user wants the computer to do. Snap Layouts and FancyZones are mentioned as alternatives that give the user ways to arrange windows, while Pop!_OS automatic tiling handled placement as apps appeared in Wawro’s experience. More choice can be useful when a person wants to shape a workspace precisely; automation can help when making that choice is itself the nuisance.

When automatic tiling can become a problem
Automatic placement is not automatically comfortable. Wawro cautions that too many open windows, or settings that are not adjusted to suit the user, can make the layout feel cramped. In his experience, Pop!_OS sometimes shrank windows so much that the maximize and close controls were hard to click.
- Watch the usable size: If text, controls, or app content become difficult to see or operate, the layout is no longer helping.
- Consider how many windows stay open: A system that keeps fitting every new window into the available space can become crowded.
- Account for setup: Settings may need adjustment before automatic placement feels comfortable.

There is no best choice established by Wawro’s account. Instead, consider how you work and what you want the system to handle:

- Automation or manual placement: Do you want windows arranged for you as apps open, or do you prefer to choose their positions?
- Choice versus setup: Would multiple layout options be useful, or do they create another decision to make?
- Behavior as windows accumulate: Does the arrangement remain understandable and useful as you open more apps?
- Comfortable controls and content: Can you still read, click, and work in each window without fighting a cramped layout?
Wawro’s experience shows why a modest workflow feature can matter: it removes repeated placement decisions for someone who opens apps frequently and does not want to manage elaborate layouts. It also shows the trade-off. If the resulting windows are too small or the layout feels crowded, automatic arrangement can replace one annoyance with another.
