Neither is a universal winner: the better choice depends on the server region, outbound-transfer allowance and charges, whether you need to re-encode the video, and how you will monitor and recover the stream.
For a loop that sends an already encoded file, start by comparing modest server plans and their network costs—not by assuming you need a high-CPU instance. At 10 Mbps sustained for 30 days, the stream uses about 3.24 TB of outbound data before overhead. That can matter more to the monthly bill than a small difference in server price.
Linode vs Hetzner: what matters for a 24/7 YouTube stream
Both providers offer cloud virtual machines suitable for running streaming software that sends video to YouTube Live. A VPS is only one part of the setup: you supply the video, configure an encoder and YouTube stream key, keep the process healthy, and pay attention to outbound data transfer.
The available information does not establish a region-matched total price or prove that either provider is more reliable for this use. Compare current plans for the same approximate region and workload, then calculate transfer charges using your expected bitrate.

Estimate bandwidth before choosing a plan
Your configured video bitrate, running time and any additional outputs determine much of the outbound traffic. A 10 Mbps stream running continuously for 30 days sends approximately 3.24 TB of decimal data before audio or protocol overhead. This is a calculation: 10,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8.
Use the bitrate you will actually configure, then add headroom for audio, protocol overhead, restarts, backup feeds or other outputs. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. A plan’s advertised link speed alone does not demonstrate a stable end-to-end route to YouTube’s ingest service.

For each candidate plan, check its included outbound allowance, whether traffic is prorated, the overage rate and billing unit, and any monthly cap or special hourly billing rules. Linode’s core-region allowances vary by plan and excess transfer may be charged. Hetzner describes included traffic and paid extra transfer, but check current region-specific terms rather than assuming a numeric allowance or rate.

Choose CPU for the encoding job you will run
Looping an already encoded video
If your software repeats an existing encoded file without re-encoding it, the work differs from producing a new video encode. A modest VM is a reasonable starting point to evaluate, but no particular instance size has been benchmarked for this workload. Test your own loop and monitor CPU, memory and stream health before relying on it continuously.

Transcoding, overlays or multiple outputs
Scaling, compositing graphics, transcoding or generating multiple outputs can raise the sustained workload. In that case, compare shared and dedicated CPU options and benchmark the actual video, settings and number of outputs. Akamai’s documentation identifies live streaming among workloads relevant to accelerated compute, especially video processing and transcoding; that does not mean an accelerated plan is necessary for a simple file loop. Hetzner describes dedicated vCPU plans for sustained high-CPU and production work.

Set up the YouTube Live side correctly
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, the listed bitrate is 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted option.

- Prepare the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the YouTube encoder settings to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Configure your encoder. Select RTMPS where available, choose a supported codec and resolution, use constant bitrate, and set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Set the bitrate for your chosen format using YouTube’s current guidance.
- Allow network headroom. YouTube recommends capacity 20% above the stream bitrate. This is headroom guidance, not a guarantee of a stable route or an uninterrupted broadcast.
- Test and monitor. Confirm the encoder connects and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Keep logs and a recovery procedure available instead of assuming a cloud VM alone prevents interruptions.

Request or calculate a current quote for the exact candidate region and plan. Record the date, currency and tax basis so the comparison is meaningful. Include more than the VM headline price:
- Server plan and any change in hourly or monthly billing terms.
- Outbound transfer allowance, projected use and overage charges.
- Public IPv4 charges, if required.
- Storage, backups, taxes, monitoring and any redundancy you choose.
- Operational work to check stream health, inspect logs and restart the encoder or recover the broadcast.
Akamai’s billing guide says many services accrue hourly charges up to a monthly cap, excluding network transfer overages. It also documents a policy change effective July 1, 2026: specified G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes and additional IPv4 addresses are billed for actual hours without a monthly price cap. Check whether the particular services you select are affected rather than assuming every Linode follows the same cap. Hetzner’s exact transfer allowance and overage rate must likewise be verified for the selected plan and region.

If projected usage fits comfortably within the included traffic and the VM can sustain your workload, choose the lower all-in quote that meets your location and operations needs. If use approaches an allowance, calculate the overage cost before prioritizing a small CPU-price difference. No provider-wide cheapest or most reliable choice follows from the available plan descriptions.
