A Linode streaming a continuous feed to YouTube uses outbound network transfer, or egress. There is no single bandwidth allowance for every Linode: the amount included, how it is pooled, and any overage depend on the plan, service region, and account usage. Estimate transfer from the stream’s ingest bitrate, then verify the applicable pool and billing details in Cloud Manager before relying on a 24/7 setup.
Bandwidth limit versus transfer allowance
These are two different constraints:
- Transfer is the quantity of data sent during a billing period. A Linode sending an encoder feed to YouTube sends outbound traffic to a destination outside its data center, which Akamai counts as metered transfer. See Akamai’s network transfer usage and costs documentation.
- Network Out is an instance’s maximum outbound bandwidth specification. It is not a monthly data allowance and does not guarantee that the whole route from an India data center to YouTube will sustain that rate. See Akamai’s compute-plan guide.
A high Network Out figure therefore does not, by itself, mean unlimited monthly streaming. Conversely, a transfer allowance is not a promise that an end-to-end stream will run at a particular bitrate.
Estimate monthly transfer from your YouTube ingest bitrate
For a steady bitrate, an approximate decimal-volume estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streaming ÷ 8 = megabytes sent, then divide by 1,000,000 for decimal terabytes. For 30 days, the calculation uses 2,592,000 seconds. These are arithmetic estimates, not published billing-meter totals; actual transfer may differ because bitrate varies and protocol overhead adds traffic.
| Example YouTube live setting | Recommended H.264 ingest bitrate | Approximate transfer over 30 continuous days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 2.592 decimal TB |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 4.536 decimal TB |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 5.508 decimal TB |
The bitrate recommendations come from YouTube’s live encoder guidance; the 30-day volumes are calculations using those bitrates and the stated continuous-stream assumption, not figures published by YouTube or Akamai. Add room for actual bitrate behavior and overhead, and compare your estimate with the current pool and billing period in Cloud Manager. Use YouTube’s live guidance—not its separate upload or VOD encoding recommendations—for a live feed: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How Linode transfer pools and overages work
Akamai says most core data centers use global transfer pools, while some newer locations use region-specific pools. A service’s allowance is prorated when it is active for only part of a month and assigned to the applicable pool. That means a Linode exceeding its own nominal allowance does not necessarily incur an overage if the relevant shared pool remains within its total allowance. Services in a region-specific pool do not draw from the global pool.
If the applicable allowance is exceeded, Akamai’s documentation says the service is not shut off solely for that reason; excess transfer is billed. The applicable overage depends on the service region and current pricing. Akamai states: “Any transfer usage that exceeds your monthly allotment is billed based on the service region (see the Pricing page).” Check the transfer and cost documentation and your account’s current Cloud Manager details rather than assuming a universal India rate.

Check the plan, region, and stream before committing
- Identify the actual stream settings. Record codec, resolution, frame rate, target ingest bitrate, and expected hours online. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and test with representative audio and motion. YouTube recommends running a speed test and monitoring stream health: YouTube live encoder guidance.
- Find the service’s allowance and Network Out. In Cloud Manager, check the current plan and region, its included transfer amount, and its Network Out specification. Treat transfer and throughput as separate figures.
- Confirm the pool assignment and account usage. Determine whether the service contributes to a global or region-specific pool, then account for other services sharing that pool. Check the pool’s current usage, not only this Linode’s individual allowance.
- Estimate the billing-period total. Apply the bitrate calculation to your expected hours, then allow for overhead and variation. Compare it with the pool allowance and verify the current regional overage billing before launching a continuous stream.
- Test the actual route. Measure sustained upload behavior at different times, including weekdays and weekends. Akamai notes that congestion, ISP conditions, and routing can affect throughput; its region guidance is not a benchmark of the specific route to YouTube.
Choosing an India region for the YouTube ingest path
Akamai describes its Chennai and Mumbai core sites as optimized for the India market. For workloads serving a wider Asia-Pacific audience or communicating with Akamai core sites outside India, its guidance recommends considering Singapore or Sydney. These are placement considerations, not guarantees of stream bitrate or latency: network congestion, the ISP, and the route can change results. Measure the path relevant to your setup rather than treating a region label as a YouTube ingest speed test. See Akamai’s data-center selection guidance.
When an accelerated Linode is—and is not—relevant
Akamai’s accelerated-instance page lists a Chennai location, 16 Gbps outbound bandwidth, zero included outbound transfer, and usage-based billing for that instance family. It also reported accelerated instances temporarily at full capacity across all regions when the page was captured. These are specialized video-processing instances, not a default choice for simply relaying an encoder feed. Verify current availability, price, and workload fit before considering one: Akamai accelerated Linodes.
