The swaggering review title needs a qualification: TechRadar recorded strong results in some positions, but its speed fell sharply when walls intervened. Those figures describe one historical test, not what every home should expect.
What kind of router is the WRT3200ACM?
Despite the AC3200 name and Linksys’s Tri-Stream branding, the WRT3200ACM is dual-band, not tri-band. Linksys identifies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios. Tri-Stream refers to the vendor’s stream and channel-bandwidth claims, not to a third Wi-Fi band. The model belongs to the 802.11ac generation; its advertised AC3200 designation is not a promise that an individual device will receive 3.2 Gbps of internet throughput.
Linksys’s 2016 datasheet describes Tri-Stream 160 as three 160 MHz streams at 867 Mbps, presented as a 2.6 Gbps total on the marketed 5 GHz configuration. The same datasheet contrasts this with three 80 MHz streams at 433 Mbps, totaling 1.3 Gbps for AC1900. These are Linksys’s theoretical, vendor-stated figures—not measured internet speeds—and actual connections depend on client capabilities and conditions. Linksys WRT3200ACM datasheet.
What hardware and connections does it offer?
Linksys’s international user guide lists four adjustable external antennas and a gigabit Ethernet switch. The rear connections include one Internet port, Ethernet ports 1–4, a USB 3.0 port and a combined USB 2.0/eSATA port. The guide specifies 10/100/1000 Mbps switch-port speeds. That mix makes the WRT3200ACM relevant to users who want wired devices or want to attach storage, as well as Wi-Fi.

The datasheet lists 256 MB of flash memory and 512 MB of RAM. These are hardware specifications, not a guarantee that a particular third-party firmware build or feature will be supported. The guide also lists WPA2 and RADIUS; those specification entries alone do not establish the router’s present-day security status. Linksys WRT3200ACM user guide and product documentation.
How fast was it in the historical review test?
TechRadar’s 2017 review reported the following results in its own test setup. The measurements are useful for seeing how performance varied by position, but they should not be treated as predictions for another home, client, broadband plan, firmware version or interference environment. In that test location, the one-wall result was roughly half the beside-router result, and the two-wall result was much lower still. The one-floor-above and one-floor-below results, by contrast, were close to the beside-router measurement. TechRadar’s results therefore support a practical distinction: the reviewer found walls more consequential than those particular floor positions, but building materials, layout and radio conditions vary, so the pattern is not a guarantee for another property.
Does the WRT3200ACM support OpenWrt or DD-WRT?
Linksys advertised the WRT3200ACM as open-source ready for OpenWrt and DD-WRT. Its datasheet says it is “Fully customizable with open source firmware from OpenWrt and DD-WRT, for optimal performance, especially suited for advanced gaming needs.” That is the manufacturer’s claim, not independent proof of gaming performance or assurance that every feature works with every firmware release. Third-party firmware can appeal to technically confident owners who want customization, but installing or managing it requires care. The available product information does not establish current compatibility with specific OpenWrt or DD-WRT releases. Check the firmware project’s current device documentation and the exact build instructions before changing firmware; do not assume a current release supports every function of the router.
What did reviewers emphasize—and what should buyers take from it?
Network World’s historical review highlighted the four screw-on antennas, four gigabit LAN ports, WAN connection, USB 3.0 and eSATA, alongside MU-MIMO and open-source firmware support. TechRadar praised customization and reported good results at several positions, while also documenting the steep drop behind walls. Who is the WRT3200ACM a good fit for?
Based on its documented features, it is most compelling for someone who values gigabit Ethernet, external antennas, attached USB/eSATA storage, or the option to investigate third-party firmware. The historical performance test also suggests that location within a home matters: a result beside the router cannot stand in for performance across multiple walls.
If you are evaluating it against another router, compare the actual factors that affect your use rather than relying on the AC3200 label:

- Coverage: Consider the walls and layout between the router and the places you need Wi-Fi.
- Comparable testing: Look for throughput tests performed with similar distances, barriers and client devices.
- Firmware: Decide whether the flexibility is useful to you and whether you are comfortable managing it.
- Wired and storage connections: Check whether you need its gigabit ports or USB/eSATA options.
- Client generation: Account for the Wi-Fi capabilities of the devices that will connect; the router’s advertised maximum does not upgrade a client’s radio.
