Short answer: a Linksys LNE100TX can be used with Symantec Ghost only when the Ghost boot environment has a network driver or template that supports the exact card revision. The available documentation explains how to add a DOS network driver, but it does not establish universal support for every LNE100TX revision, Ghost release, or target computer. Treat this as a legacy-hardware project, not a guaranteed plug-and-play setup.

What the LNE100TX is—and why that matters

The LNE100TX is Linksys’ legacy EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card, a PCI adapter designed for period desktop hardware. The Linksys user guide describes a 32-bit PCI 2.1 card that should be installed in a PCI slot supporting bus mastering. Those requirements describe the card’s historical platform; they are not a promise that the adapter will work in a modern motherboard, BIOS, or operating system.

Identify the label, hardware revision (for example, a v5 marking), and the target computer before building media. Different revisions can use different controller chips and therefore require different drivers.

What Ghost actually needs

Ghost does not recognize every network adapter automatically. A network boot package must load a driver that can initialize the NIC and provide network access to the Ghost session. The Symantec Ghost Implementation Guide says to select a network-driver template suitable for the NIC in the client computers. If no suitable template exists, obtain the card’s DOS driver and add it as a template in Ghost Boot Wizard.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That workflow is documented; a confirmed LNE100TX template for every Ghost version is not. Therefore, “the LNE100TX works with Ghost” is too broad a claim. Compatibility depends on all of these variables:

  • the exact LNE100TX hardware revision and chipset;
  • the Ghost release and Ghost Boot Wizard version;
  • whether the media uses a DOS NDIS2 driver, a packet driver, or PXE/UNDI;
  • the target machine’s PCI implementation, BIOS, and available bus-mastering support; and
  • the network boot server and protocol used by the imaging environment.

Choose the boot method first

Boot route What it uses What must be verified Typical limitation
Ghost DOS boot disk or ISO A card-specific DOS NDIS2 or packet driver loaded at boot A driver matching the exact LNE100TX revision and Ghost template format Requires locating an authentic legacy driver and configuring DOS startup files correctly
Ghost Solution Suite PXE/universal package PXE network boot and, where applicable, the NIC’s UNDI implementation NIC option ROM, BIOS PXE settings, and a server configured for the package Not the same as loading an LNE100TX DOS driver; older cards or BIOSes may lack usable PXE support
Non-network Ghost media Local storage such as CD, USB, or another attached disk Whether the Ghost build and target machine support that media Avoids NIC-driver setup but cannot image over the network without a separate transport

Broadcom’s Ghost Solution Suite guidance treats universal PXE boot and UNDI as a distinct path. UNDI depends on the NIC option ROM and the relevant BIOS options being enabled, so do not assume that a successful DOS-driver setup proves PXE compatibility, or vice versa.

How to add an LNE100TX driver in Ghost Boot Wizard

The exact labels vary by Ghost release, but the documented process is:

  1. Confirm the environment. Record the Ghost version, boot method, LNE100TX revision, target computer model, and whether the network uses PXE or a DOS disk.
  2. Obtain the correct DOS driver. Use the driver supplied for the exact card revision when possible. Linksys lists the LNE100TX as end of support; its US listing gives 2 August 2022 as the end-of-support date. Archived files should be checked for revision, provenance, and malware before use. Current documentation does not establish a verified downloadable driver file.
  3. Open Ghost Boot Wizard. Start the wizard included with the Ghost installation and choose the network-boot or network-disk option appropriate to your media.
  4. Select an existing template only if it matches. Do not choose a generic template merely because it mentions 10/100 Ethernet. The controller and driver type must correspond to the installed LNE100TX.
  5. Add a new template when no match exists. Use the wizard’s option to add a network driver, provide the DOS NDIS2 or packet-driver files, and enter the required driver filename and configuration parameters. Follow the driver’s own readme for interrupt, I/O, and protocol settings rather than guessing.
  6. Build the media and test it on the intended machine. Confirm that DOS loads the driver without an error, obtains or accepts the expected network configuration, and can reach the Ghost server or image share before attempting a restore.

Hardware checks before troubleshooting Ghost

  • Install the adapter in a 32-bit PCI slot that supports bus mastering, as specified by the historical Linksys guide.
  • Check BIOS settings for enabled PCI devices, resource assignments, and (for PXE) network or boot-ROM support.
  • Use a known-good 10/100 cable, switch port, and link indicator.
  • Record any controller-chip marking in addition to the Linksys model and revision.
  • Test the card in the same machine that will run Ghost; success in another computer does not prove compatibility.

Common failure symptoms and what they mean

Ghost Boot Wizard has no suitable template

This means the installed Ghost package does not include a recognized template, not that the card is definitively incompatible. Locate a matching DOS driver and add it manually, or use a different boot route.

DOS reports that the driver cannot load

Recheck the revision-specific driver, file paths, memory managers, and hardware-resource settings. A driver for a different LNE100TX revision may load incorrectly or not at all.

The driver loads but Ghost cannot find the server

Separate driver initialization from network configuration. Check the protocol parameters, IP or DHCP behavior, cable and switch link, and server-side share permissions. A loaded driver alone does not prove end-to-end connectivity.

PXE boot does not start

Verify that the machine firmware and NIC option ROM expose PXE/UNDI and that BIOS network-boot options are enabled. PXE failure cannot be repaired by adding a DOS NDIS2 template to a floppy or ISO.

Support status and practical expectations

Linksys marks the LNE100TX and regional variants as end-of-support. Its general driver guidance warns that end-of-life products may receive no further updates. A used card is therefore reasonable only when restoring a period-compatible PCI computer and when its revision and driver can be verified. It is not a current-networking recommendation, and no documented compatibility percentage or universal Ghost support matrix is available.
