For a quieter LinkedIn job search, set Open to Work to “Recruiters only,” turn off profile-change sharing before editing your profile, check whether applications share your profile with job posters, and review public-profile visibility separately. None of these controls makes every part of a search invisible: recruiter-only is not a guarantee, profile edits remain visible on your profile, and search engines may keep old results for weeks or months.
Choose who can see that you’re open to work
LinkedIn offers three Open to Work audiences. The best fit depends on whether you want recruiter discovery, broad visibility, or private job recommendations.

To choose or change the setting, open your profile and look for Open to > Finding a new job; job preferences are also available from the Jobs area. Labels can vary by device or interface version. LinkedIn lets you edit or delete the preferences. See LinkedIn’s Open to Work visibility and controls.
What “Recruiters only” does—and doesn’t—hide
Recruiter-only is a safeguard, not a promise that your employer cannot find out. LinkedIn says it compares the current employer on your profile with recruiter company IDs and mapped affiliated companies to limit access. It also warns that company records may be inaccurate or out of date, so it cannot guarantee complete privacy. The shared interests are intended for LinkedIn Recruiter users; this is different from the all-members option. Read LinkedIn’s explanation of privacy for shared career interests.

Stop profile edits from being broadcast
Applying for a job and changing your profile are separate activities. LinkedIn says job applications are private by default and do not send a network update just because you apply. But profile changes—such as adding a position or promotion—can be shared with your network if profile-edit sharing is enabled.
Before making discreet changes, go to your account’s visibility or activity-sharing controls and review the option for sharing profile updates; turn it off before editing. LinkedIn’s labels and navigation may change, so confirm the current control in your account. Turning off the broadcast does not remove the edit from your profile: anyone who visits it may still see the updated information. Check whether an off-site application shares your profile
Some LinkedIn job listings send you to an employer’s site when you select Apply. A separate job-seeking preference can allow LinkedIn to share your full profile with that job poster. If you do not want that transfer, inspect the preference before starting an application and disable it. LinkedIn says you may be able to undo a recent share from the job-details page. This setting is distinct from whether your application activity is broadcast to your LinkedIn network. Details are in LinkedIn’s guidance on sharing your full profile with job posters.

Limit what people outside LinkedIn can see
Your public profile is a simplified version that may be visible to people who are not signed in and may appear in search engines such as Google or Bing. In your public-profile settings, you can turn public visibility off or choose which eligible sections appear. LinkedIn also offers a public-visibility-limits control that may suppress eligible fields even while public visibility remains on. These controls affect public visibility; they are separate from what signed-in LinkedIn members can see.

Changing the LinkedIn setting does not immediately remove old search results or cached copies. Search engines control their own refresh schedules, and LinkedIn says updates may take weeks or months to show in search. Check LinkedIn’s public profile visibility guidance and its public visibility limits setting.
Review who can see your connections
LinkedIn’s connection-visibility control determines whether your first-degree connections can browse your connection list. You can turn that visibility off in the account’s visibility settings. It does not erase connection updates from your own feed.

There is a separate consideration for partner services: a first-degree connection may sync their account and see the list on another service unless you opt out of profile visibility on partner services. Changing your connection-list visibility and opting out of partner-service profile visibility address different routes. See LinkedIn’s connection visibility guidance.
Use the settings as separate controls, not one privacy switch
- Recruiter discovery: Open to Work audience controls whether career interests are available to recruiters, all members, or only you.
- Network notifications: Profile-edit sharing controls whether certain changes are broadcast; it does not hide the resulting profile content.
- Application disclosure: Off-site applications may share your full profile with the job poster if that preference is enabled.
- Public search: Public-profile controls affect nonmembers and search tools, with delays before search results refresh.
- Connection browsing: Connection visibility and partner-service visibility are separate from job-search preferences.
LinkedIn groups settings under account privacy and visibility, but section names and paths can shift between desktop and mobile. Its privacy settings overview describes the main categories; verify each control in your current account before relying on it.
