LinkedIn link previews depend on the page data LinkedIn can retrieve, not just on the tags written into your site. A wrong or missing title, description, or image can come from incorrect Open Graph metadata, an inaccessible image, a malformed URL, or LinkedIn showing cached data. Check those layers in order instead of repeatedly changing tags.

How LinkedIn builds a link preview

LinkedIn says its share box relies on oEmbeds and/or Open Graph Protocol (OGP) data to display the most accurate title, description, and image when someone shares a URL. In its website-sharing guidance, LinkedIn lists four tags that should exist: og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. These are LinkedIn’s stated requirements for sharing a website; they should not be mistaken for a complete description of every OGP consumer’s behavior.

A preview can fail even when the tags look right in your CMS. LinkedIn must retrieve the page and its image, and it may show information retained from an earlier fetch. Diagnose the metadata, image, URL, and cache separately.

Fix the problem in this order

  1. Check the metadata for the exact URL

Open the page source delivered for the URL you intend to share. Confirm that it contains one accurate value for each of og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. The values should describe that page, and the image value should point to the intended preview image. If a tag is absent, duplicated, or inaccurate, correct it in the site or CMS that generates the page source before testing again. LinkedIn’s website-sharing guidance says the page source must comply with its OGP requirements.

  2. Verify the image file and whether LinkedIn can fetch it

For the LinkedIn sharing module, LinkedIn Help states a maximum image file size of 5 MB, minimum dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a recommended aspect ratio of 1.91:1. These are sharing-module specifications, not the separate specifications shown for single-image ads on the same help page.

Passing those checks does not guarantee that LinkedIn can retrieve the image. LinkedIn notes that a site may block its image fetch, or that the image may be in a protected directory or site. If the image meets the listed dimensions and file-size guidance but is still missing, investigate access restrictions and whether your site permits LinkedIn to fetch the resource. See LinkedIn’s website-sharing requirements.

  3. Check the URL for spaces

LinkedIn says URLs containing spaces cannot be shared. If the URL has spaces, ask the site owner to remove them or encode them correctly, then use the corrected URL. Do not treat a URL problem as a metadata problem. LinkedIn covers this under troubleshooting URL-sharing issues.

  4. Allow time for cached information to change

After a share or metadata update, LinkedIn advises allowing 48 hours for changed information to take effect. If you have just corrected the tags or image, an unchanged preview may reflect cached data rather than a failed edit. The 48-hour guidance appears on LinkedIn’s URL-sharing troubleshooting page.

  5. Refresh and inspect the URL

Enter the URL in LinkedIn Post Inspector and review the preview it reports. LinkedIn says the refresh affects preview information for new posts only; it does not update the preview on posts that have already been published.

  6. Test in a new share

Paste the corrected URL into a new LinkedIn share and allow a few seconds for the preview image to appear. LinkedIn’s sharing instructions note that the link can still be shared if its preview image does not load. A missing image therefore does not necessarily mean the link itself is unusable.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

What you see What to check Next step
Wrong or missing title or description The exact page source and its og:title and og:description values Correct the values generated for that URL, then allow for cache refresh and inspect again.
Missing or wrong preview image The og:image value, the asset’s dimensions and file size, and whether the image is protected or blocked from LinkedIn’s fetch Correct the image reference or access problem; then inspect and test a new share.
Link will not share Whether the URL contains spaces Have the site owner remove or encode the spaces.
Preview still shows old information after a change Whether enough time has passed since the last share or metadata update, and whether the URL was refreshed in Post Inspector Allow the stated cache window, use Post Inspector, and test a new post rather than expecting old posts to change.

What Post Inspector can and cannot fix

Post Inspector is useful for checking the preview LinkedIn retrieves after you have corrected the page, image, or URL. It is not a substitute for fixing bad metadata or making an image accessible. Its refresh applies to new posts; existing posts keep their prior preview. If the inspector still cannot show the expected information, return to the page source and image-access checks rather than assuming the refresh changed the underlying page.
