The best beginner lighting for live streaming is usually one adjustable key light placed in front of you, near or just above eye level, and angled slightly downward. Match its color to the room, then adjust brightness and camera exposure while watching your preview. Add another light only to solve a visible problem, such as harsh shadows or a background that needs separation.
Start with one controllable key light
A key light is the main light illuminating your face. Before buying one, try a controllable lamp or daylight if you already have a usable source. Frame your shot first and find a position that lights your face without appearing in the frame or making you uncomfortable.
Place it in front of you
Put the light near or just above eye level and angle it downward. Elgato’s setup guide for its Key Light recommends placing that product directly in front, just above eye line, and angled down approximately 30 degrees. Adjust distance and brightness using the preview
Move the light closer or farther away and adjust its output until your face looks evenly lit and comfortable. There is no universal distance or brightness target established for every camera, room, and framing. Check the streaming preview: if highlights on your face lose detail, reduce the light or camera exposure; if your face is dim, bring the light closer or raise its output.

Change one thing at a time
Watch for the specific problem you are correcting. A face that looks too bright or dim calls for an exposure or brightness adjustment; orange or blue-looking skin suggests a color-temperature or white-balance mismatch; strong shadows may call for a different light position or softer light. Adjust one variable, then check the preview again so you can tell what helped.
Choose a color temperature that suits the room
Color temperature describes whether white light looks warm or cool, and is measured in Kelvin (K). Lower values look warmer; higher values look cooler. There is no single ideal Kelvin setting for every room and camera: match the light to the ambient sources where practical, then judge the result on camera.

Keep competing light sources in mind
If an overhead lamp or window makes the room visibly warmer or cooler than your key light, try switching off or controlling the competing source where practical. Alternatively, adjust the key light to blend with it. A consistent light source can make camera adjustment easier, but auto white balance behaves differently across cameras.

Set or check white balance
The light has a color temperature; white balance is the camera’s interpretation of that light, used to render whites and other colors naturally. If your camera or streaming software offers white-balance controls, check the image after fixing the room lighting. Changing white balance while changing the light makes it harder to identify which adjustment caused a color shift.
Understand the specifications that matter
Light specifications answer different questions. Compare them against your room, framing, and mounting options rather than assuming one large number guarantees a better image.

- Output (often given in lumens): describes how much light a product can produce. More output may help when the light must cover a larger area or sit farther away, but the figure alone does not say how flattering the light will look at your desk.
- CRI: indicates how accurately a light renders colors. Elgato says a CRI above 90 is generally good for camera use and above 94 is a stronger target. Treat those as Elgato’s vendor guidance, not a universal requirement or independently established threshold. Elgato’s CRI explainer
- Color-temperature range: tells you whether the light can be adjusted to suit the ambient sources in your room.
- Diffusion and size: a larger or diffused source generally spreads light more softly. The effect you see depends on the light and its position; there is no comparative test here that quantifies the difference.
- Mounting and controls: check whether a desk clamp, stand, or other mount suits your setup, whether the light fits your available space, and how you will adjust it.
As one product example—not a universal recommendation—Elgato lists its Key Light at 2,800 lumens adjustable output, CRI above 92%, and adjustable 2,900–7,000 K color temperature. Its product page also describes a desk clamp and desktop or mobile app controls. Specifications describe that particular product, not a brightness target every beginner needs. Add fill only if shadows need softening
If the key light leaves a shadow that looks too strong on one side of your face, try repositioning the key first. If the contrast remains distracting, add a weaker fill source on the shadow side. A reflector or a light bounced off a nearby pale surface can also soften shadows; the right choice depends on your room and the materials available.

Elgato’s guide suggests placing two Key Lights on either side at 45-degree angles. This is setup advice for its lights, not a requirement for a two-light setup or a reason every streamer needs two lights. Elgato’s Key Light setup guide
Use background light for a deliberate look
A separate background light can help create separation or a specific visual effect. Consider it only after your face is lit well; it does not replace a useful key light.
Evaluate a light before choosing it
There is no universally best streaming light or brightness threshold established for every beginner. Before choosing a model, check whether it will work at the distance you can place it, suit your framing and desk, and match the light already in your room.
- Is its output usable at your intended distance and coverage?
- Can you soften the light or otherwise get the look you want?
- Does its color-temperature range suit your room?
- Does the maker provide CRI information?
- Can you mount it safely without blocking your screen or taking space you need?
- Are the controls convenient for your setup, and do you need an app or network setup?
- What is included in the kit, and is the model available in your region?
For example, Elgato’s Key Light guide, version 01 dated December 15, 2020, describes Wi-Fi for initial pairing and a wired or wireless device on the network for control.
