A modal describes how an interface behaves: while it is open, the user is expected to interact with it rather than the page behind it. A lightbox describes a visual pattern that puts content—often an enlarged image or video—over the page. A lightbox may be modal, but the terms are not interchangeable: check whether the background is actually unavailable.

What is the difference between a lightbox and a modal?

The distinction is behavior versus presentation. A modal restricts interaction to a dialog until it closes. A lightbox typically displays content in an overlay, often with the rest of the page dimmed. That appearance alone does not establish whether the background can still be used.

These categories can overlap. A photo viewer that prevents interaction with the page underneath is a lightbox presented as a modal. If the overlay leaves the page interactive, it is a non-modal overlay, even if the design calls it a lightbox. In the cited HTML and ARIA documentation, “lightbox” is not a defined HTML element or ARIA role; the documented concepts are dialogs and modal behavior.

Term What it describes What to check
Modal An interaction state for a dialog or similar component. Is interaction with the background blocked while it is open?
Lightbox A visual pattern that presents content above the page, commonly media. Does it also block background interaction, or is it only an overlay?

How do you tell whether an overlay is modal?

Look beyond the dimming or placement of the overlay. The practical test is whether the user can interact with the page behind it while it is open. MDN distinguishes modal dialogs, which make the rest of the page unavailable, from non-modal dialogs, which leave it available (MDN: dialog role).

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Background unavailable: the component behaves as a modal. Users should complete or dismiss the focused interaction before returning to the page.
  • Background available: the component is non-modal, regardless of whether it looks like a lightbox.

Do not assume that outside-click dismissal is built into the word “lightbox.” Decide deliberately how a component closes, and provide a clear close control.

How should you choose a pattern?

Choose based on what the user needs to do and whether the underlying page should remain usable. A focused decision or task often calls for a modal; viewing supplemental media may suit a lightbox, either modal or non-modal depending on the intended interaction.

What does an accessible modal need?

Modal semantics do not implement modal behavior. Setting aria-modal="true" communicates that a dialog is modal to assistive technologies; it does not, by itself, trap focus, prevent background interaction, or open and close the dialog (MDN: aria-modal).

A modal should have a useful accessible name and keyboard-operable controls. When it opens, move focus into it; keep keyboard focus within it while it remains open; and return focus to the control that invoked it when it closes. Ensure the page behind a modal is unavailable to interaction, and provide a clear way to dismiss the dialog. A role="dialog" declaration alone is not enough; labeling and focus management matter too (MDN: dialog role).

Can the native HTML dialog element create either pattern?

Yes. The HTML <dialog> element can be opened as either a modal or non-modal dialog. Calling showModal() opens it modally; calling show() opens it non-modally. You can use either presentation for a media lightbox, depending on whether the background should be blocked. The native element includes behaviors that a custom dialog must otherwise provide (MDN: HTML dialog).

Provide an explicit dismissal mechanism. A native modal opened with showModal() can be dismissed with Escape by default. Check the behavior in the browsers you support, then test the finished component with a keyboard and assistive technology; do not treat the native element as a substitute for testing.

Does accessibility require using <dialog>?

No. W3C’s H102 technique describes creating a modal with HTML <dialog> in relation to WCAG 2.2 focus order, but W3C techniques are examples, not required implementations (W3C WAI: H102). A custom implementation can use a different approach, but it still needs to deliver appropriate semantics, focus handling, keyboard operation, and background behavior.
