Use satellite imagery to monitor forest cover and change across large areas, LiDAR when vertical forest structure is central, and drone photogrammetry for detailed surveys of accessible local sites. None is a universal winner. Biomass estimates from any of these methods may depend on models and field measurements, and many projects get the most useful result by combining broad satellite coverage with structural data and field plots.

How the three methods differ

The main difference is what each method observes and at what scale. Satellite imagery supports repeatable, broad-area observation; LiDAR samples three-dimensional forest structure; and drone photogrammetry reconstructs visible surfaces from overlapping images collected over a local site. These are different measurement workflows, not three interchangeable ways to produce the same map.

Method Best fit What it contributes Important qualification
Satellite imagery Regional or larger-area forest extent, disturbance, and recovery monitoring Broad coverage and repeat observations suitable for tracking change over time Products differ by sensor and target. Structural or biomass estimates may require models and ground reference data.
LiDAR Projects focused on canopy height, vertical profiles, or other structural attributes Direct observations of vertical forest structure at the acquisition scale Spaceborne LiDAR may sample footprints rather than provide wall-to-wall coverage. Biomass is commonly estimated by relating LiDAR measurements to field plots.
Drone mapping with photogrammetry Detailed, repeat surveys of accessible local sites Image-based reconstruction of visible surfaces and structure It depends on suitable imagery, safe and lawful flight access, and a processing workflow. Results from one forest or study should not be assumed to transfer to another.

Which is best for large-area forest monitoring?

Satellite imagery is usually the practical starting point when the monitoring area is extensive and the main questions concern forest extent, disturbance, or recovery. The U.S. Forest Service describes using historical Landsat imagery to examine disturbance regimes and recovery. That makes satellite observations useful for tracking broad change, but it does not mean every satellite product directly measures every forest attribute.

For structural questions over a large region, satellite coverage can be paired with LiDAR observations and inventory plots. A 2024 U.S. Forest Service study describes producing a spatially complete 1 km aboveground biomass-density map for the contiguous United States by connecting spaceborne LiDAR with national forest inventory plots. The study also reports a precision comparison at a 64,000-hectare scale; that is an example of a scaling workflow, not a general accuracy guarantee for other forests or projects.

When should you choose LiDAR?

Choose LiDAR when the monitoring question depends on the vertical arrangement of vegetation: for example, canopy height, vertical profiles, or structural variation. LiDAR adds structural observations that optical imagery alone may not provide in the same way.

Be clear about the coverage of the LiDAR data. Spaceborne LiDAR observations can be sampled footprints rather than a continuous map. A wall-to-wall estimate may therefore require additional data and modelling. For aboveground biomass, the U.S. Forest Service’s 2024 study connects spaceborne LiDAR measurements to national forest inventory plots to create a spatially complete product. The field data and model are part of the workflow, not optional proof that a LiDAR measurement is itself a biomass value.

When is drone photogrammetry a good fit?

Drone photogrammetry is useful when a project needs fine-detail mapping over a local site and can support repeat flights, image processing, and safe, lawful access. It reconstructs surfaces and visible structure from overlapping photographs. This can support local measurements, but it is not automatically a substitute for LiDAR: the available view, terrain information, forest conditions, and processing method matter.

A 2018 U.S. Forest Service-indexed Oregon study by Fankhauser, Strigul, and Gatziolis compared unmanned aerial system (UAS) photogrammetry with field inventory and airborne laser scanning (ALS) on a subsample of National Forest plots. In that study, UAS tree counts agreed with field data at r² = 0.84, compared with r² = 0.93 for ALS tree counts. The authors also describe ALS-derived terrain descriptions as useful to the UAS approach. These results characterize that study and sample; they are not a general ranking of all drone and LiDAR systems.

Can a drone measure tree height or biomass?

Tree height

Drone photogrammetry can support tree-height estimation, but the result is an estimate derived from image-based structure and the workflow used to interpret it. In the Oregon study, UAS mean plot tree-height estimates compared with field inventory at r² = 0.82 and RMSE = 2.92 m. Compared with ALS, the UAS estimates had r² = 0.97 and RMSE = 1.04 m. Those figures are specific to the study’s plots and methods; they do not establish expected error for a new site.

Biomass

A drone-derived map can contribute to a biomass model, but a photograph or photogrammetric surface is not, by itself, a direct biomass measurement. Forest type, terrain information, model design, and local field calibration affect whether the estimates are appropriate for a project.

For example, an Alonzo et al. 2020 study in Southcentral Alaska examined tall-shrub biomass. At 5 m resolution, its best reported model used G-LiHT structure-from-motion color and structure variables and achieved R² = 0.81 and RMSE = 1.09 kg m⁻²; the study’s LiDAR-only models reported R² = 0.74 and RMSE = 1.26 kg m⁻². This is a particular shrub ecosystem and model comparison, not evidence that imagery generally outperforms LiDAR. The study identifies existing LiDAR terrain information and local field calibration data as useful.

Is LiDAR more accurate than satellite imagery?

There is no single cross-method accuracy ranking established here. “Accuracy” depends on the target attribute, sensor and product, forest conditions, spatial scale, model, and reference data. A structural measurement, a forest-cover classification, and a biomass estimate are different outputs and should not be treated as one contest.

Use accuracy evidence that matches the intended decision. The Oregon UAS study reports comparisons for tree counts and tree height against field data and ALS; the Alaska study reports results for a particular tall-shrub biomass model. Neither supplies a universal comparison among satellite imagery, LiDAR, and drones across forest types. For biomass in particular, check how the estimate was calibrated and validated against field measurements.

Do you need field plots to estimate forest biomass?

For defensible biomass estimates, field plots are often part of the calibration or reference workflow. Sensors record observations—such as imagery or structural returns—and models relate those observations to the forest attribute being estimated. The 2024 U.S. Forest Service biomass mapping study connects spaceborne LiDAR with national inventory plots; the Alaska study also identifies local field calibration as useful.

The plot design should match the forest conditions and the intended map or reporting area. A model calibrated in one ecosystem should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to another. The required number and distribution of plots are project-specific; the cited studies do not establish a universal sampling prescription.

Decide in this order, so the sensor follows the monitoring question rather than the other way around:

  1. Set the target. Specify whether you need forest extent, disturbance, recovery, tree counts, canopy height, vertical structure, biomass, or carbon. These targets do not all require the same observations.
  2. Define area and revisit needs. A regional change-monitoring task points toward satellite coverage; a local high-detail survey may suit a drone; structural sampling may call for LiDAR at an appropriate acquisition scale.
  3. Set the required detail and coverage. Decide whether you need a continuous map or can work with sampled observations, and what spatial resolution is meaningful for the decision.
  4. Account for site conditions. Consider forest type, canopy closure, terrain, and seasonal conditions. These can affect what imagery or structural measurements capture.
  5. Check access and operations. For drones, confirm that the site can be reached and flights can be conducted safely and lawfully. Plan for repeatability if change over time is the goal.
  6. Plan calibration and validation. Identify available field plots and how they relate to the target attribute. For biomass and similar modelled outputs, do not treat sensor coverage as a replacement for suitable reference data.
  7. Check processing capacity and acceptable uncertainty. Make sure the team can handle data storage, analysis, and the uncertainty the management or reporting decision can tolerate.

Why combining methods can work better

The methods can address different parts of one monitoring design. Satellite observations can provide broad coverage and repeated views of change; LiDAR can contribute vertical structural information at its acquisition scale; drone photogrammetry can add fine local detail; and field plots can ground or calibrate estimates. The mix should follow the target, coverage needs, available data, and capacity to process and validate the results.

There is no geographically and operationally comparable cost statistic established for these options, so a universal price ranking would be misleading. Costs depend on the area, acquisition plan, processing, fieldwork, and operational constraints of the particular project.
