LibrePing is an open-source uptime-monitoring project that separates monitoring probes from dashboard hubs, then shares check data between hubs over a libp2p mesh. You can use its public dashboard without signing up or hosting anything, or run a probe to add a monitoring vantage point. The project documents how this is intended to work; the available sources do not establish independently measured reliability, scale, or resistance to malicious probes.

What LibrePing is—and why it is decentralized

LibrePing is presented by its author, Michael Volchenkov, as an alternative to putting every monitoring target and vantage point under one centralized service. The project is open source under AGPL-3.0 and is written in Go, with a React/TypeScript dashboard. Its hubs use libp2p to exchange checks and results peer to peer. These are descriptions published by the project and its author, not findings from an independent code or operational audit.

The design has two main roles: probes perform checks, while hubs collect and display results and share data with other hubs. This separation lets someone contribute a monitoring location without necessarily operating a dashboard hub.

How probes and hubs share monitoring data

Probes perform and sign checks

A probe runs scheduled checks and signs its results. The repository says hubs verify those signatures so forged or altered results can be rejected. A signature ties a result to a probe key; it does not prove that the probe is honest or physically located where it claims.

Hubs provide dashboards and exchange data

Hubs host dashboards and participate in the mesh. According to the repository, the replicated information includes the check catalog, subscriptions, alert rules, and hub directory. Larger result data is sharded across hubs and can be fetched on demand.

The project describes gossip, anti-entropy, and catch-up synchronization to help hubs reconcile information after joining late or returning from an outage. The author summarizes the intended behavior: “Gossip + anti-entropy means a hub that joins late can catch up instead of only seeing new traffic.” — Michael Volchenkov, September 24, 2026. The description implies eventual convergence, not instantaneous synchronization or a measured guarantee of availability or scale.

Which checks LibrePing supports

The repository lists six check types:

  • HTTP and HTTPS requests
  • TCP connectivity
  • DNS queries
  • TLS certificate checks
  • ICMP ping
  • Traceroute

ICMP ping and traceroute require raw-socket capability. The project specifies NET_RAW for probes that run those checks; a deployment without that capability should not be expected to perform them.

How to try LibrePing or contribute infrastructure

Use a public dashboard

If you only want to monitor checks, the project presents its public dashboard as usable without signup or self-hosting. That is the lowest-effort way to explore the service. The repository describes a browser-generated key as the user account and says a recovery phrase can be used to move to another device.

LANProbe 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet/USB Bypass Network Tap
  • (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
  • The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
  • Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
  • Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
  • 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.

Run a probe

To add a monitoring vantage point, run a probe using the project’s Docker Compose setup. The repository names a spare server, VPS, or NAS as possible hosts. A NAS is optional; before choosing any device, verify that its operating system supports Docker and that its network configuration permits the checks you intend to run. Enable raw-socket capability only if you need ICMP or traceroute.

Run a hub

A hub provides a dashboard and participates in mesh sharing. The repository documents Docker Compose for setup and notes that public mesh participation depends on network reachability and configuration. A hub therefore involves more networking and operational responsibility than simply adding a probe.

What LibrePing’s trust model does—and does not—establish

LibrePing’s documented default is to accept validly signed results and show their origin. Confidence can be increased by looking for agreement among multiple independent probes, but agreement is corroboration rather than proof: probes may be mistaken, compromised, or coordinated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Probe geography is self-declared. The project says a location may be inferred automatically from a public IP, but that is not cryptographic proof of physical location. A signed result can establish which probe key produced it; it cannot by itself establish the probe’s geographic position or rule out deceptive behavior. The author has solicited feedback on probe trust and abuse resistance, and the reviewed material does not establish that malicious probes or collusion are prevented.

How to interpret failures from different regions

Multi-location monitoring raises an operational question: when should geographically diverse failures be treated as one incident, and when should they remain separate? LibrePing’s measurements can help expose regional differences, but the project material does not define a universal incident-grouping policy. Treat failures from different probes as distinct observations first. Combine them into one incident only when your own service boundaries, impact criteria, and corroboration rules support that decision.

Likewise, the community has asked which labels or exemplars would make multi-location measurements useful in Prometheus or OpenTelemetry. That discussion is a request for guidance, not evidence that LibrePing currently provides a particular integration. Check the project’s current documentation before depending on one.

What is established, and what remains unmeasured

The repository documents the architecture, supported checks, setup path, and intended synchronization behavior. The material reviewed does not provide an independent operational audit or benchmark, and it publishes no substantiated usage, uptime, node-count, performance, or adoption figures. Its sharding and deduplication descriptions should therefore be read as design claims, not proof of performance at a particular scale.

LibrePing is most compelling to readers who value control over probe locations and a mesh-based alternative to a single monitoring control plane. The trade-off is that trust in probe origin, regional interpretation, and hub operation requires attention; the project documentation alone does not resolve those operational questions.
