Choose LibreOffice if you want a free, offline-first desktop suite that works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose Microsoft 365 if you need built-in cloud storage, browser and mobile access, automatic feature updates, or real-time coauthoring with other Microsoft users. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on your budget, collaboration needs, file compatibility, operating system, and tolerance for cloud dependence.

The practical difference at a glance

LibreOffice is an installable desktop suite backed by The Document Foundation. It has no license fee and includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math, and Base. Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that combines desktop applications with web and mobile versions, cloud storage, sharing, and continuing updates.

Cost: free software versus a recurring service

LibreOffice has no license fee

You can download and use LibreOffice without paying a license charge. That makes it attractive for a household with several computers, a school lab, or anyone who does not want a monthly bill. The free license covers the suite itself; it does not automatically provide cloud storage, managed technical support, or Microsoft 365 services.

Microsoft 365 Personal

Microsoft’s current Store listing, accessed in 2026, shows Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. The plan includes 1 TB of storage. Annual billing costs less than paying twelve monthly installments at those listed rates, but the price is region-specific and may change.

Microsoft 365 Family

The same listing shows Microsoft 365 Family at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year. It covers one to six people and provides 2 TB of shared storage. A family that would otherwise buy several individual subscriptions may get better value from the shared plan, provided every user is comfortable with Microsoft accounts and cloud storage.

How to compare the totals fairly

  • Count the computers and people who need the software.
  • Include the value of the 1 TB or 2 TB storage allowance only if you would otherwise pay for comparable storage.
  • Decide whether browser and phone access, collaboration, and automatic updates are requirements rather than optional extras.
  • Remember that LibreOffice’s zero license cost does not include a Microsoft-compatible cloud workflow.

What you get for everyday documents, spreadsheets, and presentations

Writer versus Word

Writer handles letters, reports, resumes, forms, and long documents. It supports styles, headers and footers, tables, comments, tracked changes, export to PDF, and Microsoft Word formats. Word has the advantage when a team already uses Word templates, advanced reviewing workflows, or Microsoft’s browser and mobile editors. For a document created and printed locally, Writer is usually sufficient; for a document that will circulate through several Microsoft users, test the final DOCX in Word before delivery.

Calc versus Excel

Calc covers household budgets, lists, schedules, charts, formulas, filters, and ordinary business spreadsheets. It opens and saves XLS and XLSX files. Excel is the safer choice when a workbook relies on complex formatting, specialized add-ins, external data connections, or macros written for Microsoft’s environment. A simple table is likely to transfer cleanly; a financial or operational workbook should be validated in the application that recipients will use.

Impress versus PowerPoint

Impress provides slide layouts, notes, transitions, animations, images, charts, and presentation export. PowerPoint offers the most predictable results when the presentation uses Microsoft-specific themes, fonts, animations, embedded media, or collaborative editing. If you build slides in Impress for a Microsoft audience, open the saved PPTX on the delivery computer and check every slide in slideshow mode.

LibreOffice’s additional modules

  • Draw: page-layout and diagram work, including simple brochures, posters, and PDFs.
  • Math: formula and equation creation.
  • Base: database front ends for users who need more than a spreadsheet.

Microsoft 365’s value is concentrated in its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications plus connected services. LibreOffice’s broader desktop bundle can be useful when you want those additional tools without adding another license.

File compatibility: can LibreOffice open Microsoft files?

Yes. LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office formats, including the Microsoft Office Open XML formats. In practical terms, that means it can work with DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX, and PPT/PPTX files.

Where conversion is usually straightforward

  • Plain text documents with common fonts and paragraph styles
  • Basic tables, lists, and page breaks
  • Simple formulas, sorting, and charts in spreadsheets
  • Presentations using standard text boxes, images, and uncomplicated transitions

Where you should expect checking

  • Documents with intricate page layouts, floating objects, or unusual font substitutions
  • Spreadsheets using complex formulas, macros, add-ins, pivot features, or external links
  • Presentations with embedded media, custom themes, specialized animations, or proprietary fonts
  • Templates that depend on Microsoft-specific fields or automation

The Document Foundation describes LibreOffice as compatible with Microsoft Office 365, while LibreOffice Help cautions that it opens and saves Microsoft formats rather than promising perfect reproduction of every feature. Treat compatibility as a workflow to verify, not a guarantee that every element will be identical.

A safe exchange procedure

  1. Keep an editable master in the format native to the application where you do most of the work.
  2. Save an exchange copy as DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX, rather than overwriting the master.
  3. Open that exchange copy in the program your recipient will use.
  4. Check pagination, fonts, formulas, charts, comments, tracked changes, hyperlinks, and print or slideshow output.
  5. Send a PDF as a visual reference when the recipient only needs to read or print the result.

Collaboration and sharing

Microsoft 365’s integrated coauthoring workflow

Microsoft 365 is the stronger option when several people must edit the same file at the same time. Save the document in OneDrive or SharePoint, select the sharing control, set the recipients’ permissions, and send a link. Microsoft Support says links let you work with people who do not have the desktop Office applications, and the service provides presence indicators, automatic saving, and version history.

  1. Save the file in OneDrive or a SharePoint library.
  2. Choose Share and set whether recipients can edit or view.
  3. Send the generated link instead of attaching separate copies.
  4. Watch the presence indicators to see who is editing.
  5. Use version history if you need to inspect or restore an earlier state.

This workflow reduces “final-final” attachment chains and keeps everyone on one current copy, but it depends on accounts, permissions, and internet access for the shared service.

LibreOffice sharing and review

LibreOffice includes comments, change tracking, and document-sharing features. The cited Writer, Impress, and Draw guidance describes shared editing as one-editor-at-a-time, so it is not equivalent to Microsoft 365’s simultaneous coauthoring. It works better for a handoff or review process in which one person edits, another comments, and the file is passed back.

Offline work, cloud access, and device continuity

When LibreOffice is the better fit

LibreOffice is a native desktop download. Once installed, you can create and edit local files without a subscription sign-in or an internet connection. This suits travel, unreliable connectivity, privacy-conscious local workflows, and computers that run Linux. You remain responsible for your own backups and for moving files between devices.

When Microsoft 365 is the better fit

Microsoft 365 connects desktop applications with browser and mobile versions. A file saved to OneDrive or SharePoint can be continued on another computer, a tablet, or a phone, subject to the capabilities of that device and the account’s access. Cloud synchronization also supplies a central location for a team, while local offline copies can be used when a connection is unavailable and synchronized later.

The trade-off is ongoing account and service dependence. If your work must remain entirely local, LibreOffice’s model is simpler. If you regularly switch devices or collaborate across locations, Microsoft 365 avoids manual copying.

Operating-system and hardware considerations

LibreOffice requirements

The Document Foundation’s current requirements list Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or later, and Linux with kernel 4.18 or later. Check the specific download’s processor and memory guidance for an older computer, and install the build appropriate to your operating system.

Microsoft 365 access

Microsoft 365 spans desktop applications, web browsers, Android, and iOS. The browser versions are useful on computers where installing software is restricted, while the desktop versions generally provide the broadest feature set. Mobile apps are designed for on-the-go viewing and editing; complex spreadsheet or layout work remains more comfortable on a desktop or laptop.

Updates, support, and control

A Microsoft 365 subscription includes continuing feature updates along with its applications and storage. That keeps the service aligned with current Microsoft collaboration features, but the interface and behavior can change over time.

LibreOffice is installed software whose operation is not tied to a subscription. You choose when to install a newer release, which can be preferable when a stable, known environment matters. It also means you must plan your own update schedule and confirm that extensions, templates, and file workflows still behave as expected after an upgrade.

Which suite fits common situations?

Choose LibreOffice for a single-user home computer

Pick LibreOffice when your work is mostly local letters, budgets, school assignments, PDFs, and presentations; you do not need simultaneous editing; and avoiding recurring fees matters more than integrated cloud storage.

Choose Microsoft 365 for a household sharing files

Microsoft 365 Family is designed for one to six people and includes shared storage. It is a practical choice when family members use different devices and need one account-based place for documents, photos, or school work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Microsoft 365 for a Microsoft-centered workplace

If colleagues already share Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files through OneDrive or SharePoint, use Microsoft 365 to minimize conversion checks and enable live coauthoring. The benefit is largest when multiple people edit the same document rather than simply opening files one at a time.

  • Manage all your email accounts and efficiently schedule with the inlcuded MAIL & CALENDAR apps

Choose LibreOffice for Linux or an offline-first setup

LibreOffice has a native Linux build and does not require a subscription to edit local files. It is the straightforward option when Linux support or independence from cloud services is a primary requirement.

Use both when your roles are different

You can do routine local work in LibreOffice and keep Microsoft 365 for projects that require coauthoring or exact Microsoft formatting. Establish a rule for which application owns the master file, and perform a final compatibility check before sending a converted document.

A one-time-purchase alternative: Microsoft Office Home 2024

Microsoft Office Home 2024 is a relevant alternative for someone who wants Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on one PC or Mac without a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft describes its individual and family Office suites as one-time purchases that include those applications for use on a single computer. It does not provide the subscription bundle’s continuing service model, so compare the included apps, device limit, update policy, and any cloud-storage needs before buying.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming a successful open means perfect compatibility

A file can open while still having changed page breaks, fonts, formulas, or animations. Always inspect the output in the recipient’s application when the document is important.

Overwriting the only copy during conversion

Keep a native master and create a separate exchange copy. This gives you a clean source if a conversion changes formatting.

Expecting LibreOffice to provide Microsoft-style live editing

Comments and tracked changes support review, but the cited LibreOffice guidance does not describe simultaneous multi-user editing. Use a turn-based workflow or Microsoft 365 when people must type in the same document together.

Forgetting the cloud requirement

Microsoft 365’s sharing, synchronization, and version history rely on OneDrive or SharePoint access. Confirm that every collaborator can sign in and has the required permissions before moving a project there.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Comparing only the sticker price

Include storage, number of users, device switching, collaboration time, and the cost of rechecking converted files. A free license can still require manual file management; a subscription can replace separate storage and collaboration services.

Bottom-line decision rules

  • Pick LibreOffice for no-cost, offline-first desktop work, Linux support, and local control.
  • Pick Microsoft 365 for OneDrive or SharePoint storage, real-time coauthoring, browser and mobile continuity, and the most predictable Microsoft-format workflow.
  • Consider Office Home 2024 when you want Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on one computer with a one-time purchase rather than a subscription.
