Neither team has advanced yet. The Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty are scheduled to begin their 2026 WNBA semifinal on October 4. Atlanta has the stronger regular-season record and higher seed; New York has the headline-making first-round upset. Any pick made before the best-of-five series is complete is a prediction, not a result.
What is at stake in the Liberty–Dream series?
The 2026 playoff bracket pairs No. 4 Atlanta with No. 8 New York in a semifinal scheduled to start October 4. The series winner will reach the WNBA Finals, which the league’s bracket lists as beginning October 17. The WNBA’s 2026 playoff page sets semifinals as best-of-five series and the Finals as best-of-seven.
League-wide regular-season records determine playoff seeds, rather than conference standings. That makes Atlanta the higher seed despite both teams coming through the first round with 2-0 sweeps.

Record and offensive production
Atlanta finished 30-14, matching its franchise-best regular-season record, according to the WNBA’s first-round preview. New York finished 26-18. The league’s 2026 preview ranked the Dream third in scoring at 91.3 points per game. In the preview’s regular-season statistics, Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray combined for 53.1 points per game.

Rebounding and second chances
The WNBA identified Reese as the league’s regular-season rebounds leader and noted Atlanta’s second-chance scoring and rebounding as strengths. Those are relevant reasons the Dream earned the better record, but the first-round preview discussed Reese in a matchup with Washington’s Shakira Austin; it does not establish how Atlanta’s rebounding will fare against New York.
Why New York can overturn the seed difference
The Liberty’s first-round statement
New York swept the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx 2-0. The WNBA’s first-round recap called the Liberty the first No. 8 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed under the current first-round format. That result shows New York can deliver in the playoffs, but it is still a two-game sample, not proof of what will happen against Atlanta.

Stewart’s all-around regular season
Breanna Stewart averaged 20.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game in the regular season, according to the WNBA’s preview. The league described New York’s season as uneven: an eight-game winning streak was followed by a 2-8 stretch, then a 13-4 run before consecutive losses closed the regular season. The seed reflects the full season; the Minnesota sweep offers evidence that the Liberty’s late-season and playoff form cannot be dismissed.
Who is more likely to advance?
Pick: Atlanta, narrowly, as a forecast—not a confirmed outcome. The Dream’s 30-14 record, higher seed and league-leading rebounding presence provide the steadier case across a series. New York’s sweep of Minnesota makes this a genuine contest rather than a straightforward seed-based call, and Stewart’s production gives the Liberty an established all-around centerpiece.

The WNBA’s official 2026 playoff page describes the rounds this way: “The WNBA playoffs consist of three rounds: a best-of-three (1-1-1) first round, followed by best-of-five (2-2-1) semifinals and best-of-seven (2-2-1-1-1) finals.” Atlanta–New York is the semifinal; its winner advances to the Finals.
