If your LG TV picture is too dark, first set Picture Mode to Standard and turn Energy Saving off. LG says those are common causes. If the problem affects only one HDMI source, check that connection; if the TV’s own menu is hard to see or only part of the screen is dark, contact LG support or a technician.
Find out whether the problem affects one source or the whole TV
Open the TV’s settings menu, then compare its brightness with the affected app or input. Try another input or app as well. If the menu and several sources are all dim, start with the TV’s picture settings. If only one HDMI device or broadcast looks dark, check that source and its connection.
LG notes that picture settings can vary by input, so check the settings while viewing the source that looks dark. The picture mode may need to be set again after changing inputs. LG USA Support explains that picture settings can differ by source.

A mode such as Eco or Auto Power Save can make the image look dim. LG recommends changing the picture mode to Standard; Vivid is another option on some models, but Standard is a sensible first setting because it avoids making the picture unnecessarily intense.

- 2021 and newer TVs (webOS 6.0 or later): Settings → All Settings → Picture → Select Mode → Standard.
- 2020 and older TVs (webOS 5.0 or earlier): Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → Picture Mode, then choose Standard if available.
Menu wording can differ by model. These paths are starting points from LG’s dark-picture instructions.
Turn Energy Saving off
Energy Saving can reduce brightness, and on some settings it can change brightness with ambient conditions. Look for Energy Saving or Energy Saving Step, then select Off. The path depends on the TV’s webOS version:

LG’s current U.S. guidance separates these menu routes by year and software version; a model’s menu may differ. See LG USA Support’s instructions for finding and disabling Energy Saving. If brightness changes as room lighting changes, Energy Saving is one setting to check; LG’s intermittent-brightness guidance describes this behavior.
If only one HDMI source is dark, check its connection
Turn off or pause the source device, then make sure its HDMI cable is firmly seated at both ends. Compare another TV input or source. If the picture is still dark only on that HDMI connection, try a cable you already know works before buying a replacement. A cable is a relevant suspect only when the symptom is limited to that source; it will not explain a dim TV menu or one dark area of the screen.

Reset picture settings if adjustments do not help
Picture reset returns picture settings to their defaults. Use the route for your TV generation:
- 2021 and newer: Settings → All Settings → Picture → Advanced Settings → Reset.
- 2020 and older: Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → Reset.
Reset paths are listed in LG’s dark-picture guide. After resetting, select the affected input and check its picture mode again.

Use AV Reset only if your model supports it
Some LG models offer a shortcut to initialize picture and sound settings: press Mute three times, then choose AV Reset. It is not supported on every model, and menu details vary. Check your model’s manual or support page before relying on it. LG’s AV Reset instructions describe the shortcut and its model caveats.
When a dark picture needs service
Contact LG support or arrange a technician if the settings menu itself is too dark to read, only part of the screen is dark, or the picture remains dim after checking the settings, source, and reset. Those symptoms are less consistent with a simple input setting; LG says an internal issue may need attention. An out-of-warranty service fee may apply. Start with LG USA Support’s troubleshooting and service guidance.
