The October 19–20, 2025 AWS disruption shows why a website screenshot or uptime result depends on more than the target website: the probe, its cloud services, result storage, and alert path can all have dependencies of their own. AWS traced the initiating problem to DNS management for DynamoDB’s US-EAST-1 regional endpoint, with effects that spread to other services. The incident is a reason to ask how monitoring systems remain observable during a cloud disruption—not evidence that any particular screenshot vendor failed or stayed online.
What happened in the AWS us-east-1 disruption?
AWS’s detailed post-event summary says the event began at 11:48 PM PDT on October 19, 2025. A latent race condition in DynamoDB’s automated DNS management resulted in an incorrect empty DNS record for the regional endpoint, dynamodb.us-east-1.amazonaws.com. AWS says the automation failed to repair it, leaving endpoint resolution failures that blocked new connections. AWS also notes that internal services depended on the affected endpoint. AWS’s post-event summary attributes the trigger to that DNS-management issue, rather than to a generic internet-wide failure.
The service effects unfolded in overlapping periods, not as one uniform outage. AWS’s detailed report gives these windows:

AWS’s detailed summary describes the event span as ending at 2:20 PM PDT on October 20. A separate, broader AWS update said all AWS services had returned to normal operations by 3:01 PM PDT. Those are different milestones: the service-impact endpoint in the detailed report and the later broad normalization update. Saying simply that “AWS was down for X hours” obscures which service and recovery milestone is meant. AWS detailed summary; AWS broader update.

How a regional problem affected other services
AWS describes dependent effects involving EC2 instance launches, Network Load Balancer health checks and connectivity, Lambda, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, and other internal operations. AWS temporarily throttled some operations during recovery. It also says existing EC2 instances launched before the event remained healthy. The incident was centered on US-EAST-1, but dependencies allowed the regional endpoint problem to affect other AWS services and customer applications. That is more precise than saying AWS “went down everywhere.”
What the incident means for website screenshots and monitoring
A screenshot check can only capture what its browser probe can reach and render. An uptime check can only report what its probe can connect to and observe. Both also rely on systems that may be separate from the target: the service’s control plane, cloud infrastructure, result storage, and alert delivery. The AWS incident does not establish how any named commercial screenshot or monitoring service performed; AWS’s reporting describes AWS’s event, not those vendors’ architectures.

When reviewing a monitoring setup, ask where probes run, which providers and regions support their control planes, and whether checking, result storage, and notification share a critical dependency. Consider whether another independent path can still report an incident if the primary environment degrades. These are resilience questions prompted by AWS’s documented dependency chain, not claims about any particular provider.

What to compare when evaluating services
- Probe geography and cloud concentration: Find out which regions and providers perform checks, and whether a single region or provider is a common point of failure.
- Control plane and result storage: Ask whether a degraded monitoring control plane or storage dependency could prevent checks, hide results, or delay reports.
- Alert delivery: Check whether notifications depend on the same systems being monitored or on a separate route.
- Check type: Match the service to the question: a screenshot shows rendered page appearance; HTTP checks, browser journeys, or API checks answer different availability questions.
- Incident transparency: Look for a clear incident history and enough detail to understand what was affected and when.
How to tell whether your website is down or AWS is down
Use independent observations rather than treating one screenshot, one status page, or one probe as conclusive. A failed check could reflect the website, its hosting or dependencies, the probe’s network path, or the monitoring service itself.

- Check the target from more than one independent path. Compare a user-facing test from a relevant audience location with a separate network or monitoring provider. If only one path fails, investigate that path before concluding the site is broadly unavailable.
- Inspect your own application and infrastructure signals. Review origin logs, application health, DNS resolution, and dependency errors. If your site runs on AWS, check the specific services and regions it uses rather than assuming every AWS service or region is affected.
- Consult AWS public service health for context. AWS says its public Service Health dashboard shows reported events across services and regions without requiring login, but the events are not specific to an individual account. It can provide regional context, not prove that your URL or complete user journey works from your audience’s locations. AWS Health Dashboard documentation.
- Check account-specific AWS Health separately. A signed-in account health view can show events that affect that account. AWS documents a service history covering the preceding 12 months, filterable by service, region, and date. Account-specific events and public service events answer different questions. - Compare the timeline. Match failed checks and alerts against AWS service events and your own logs. A coincident regional incident is useful evidence to investigate, but it does not by itself establish that AWS caused a particular customer’s failure.

What the AWS incident can—and cannot—tell you
The event is a concrete example of how a DNS fault in a regional service can propagate through dependencies, and why an outage’s duration depends on the service and milestone being discussed. AWS’s public status reporting is useful context, while account health and independent outside-in tests provide distinct views. None alone proves that a customer-facing site works for its intended users.
AWS says its public post-event summaries describe impact scope, contributing factors, and risk-reduction actions, and remain available for a minimum of five years. The reviewed AWS materials do not establish which commercial screenshot vendors were affected or whether any remained available.
