The Leica Cine Compact 1 is worth considering if you can watch in a dim or dark room, want a 4K projector with streaming apps built in, and value flexible placement more than maximum brightness. It is a weaker choice for a bright living room, or for a setup that needs several HDMI sources without extra hardware.

This article draws on Leica’s published specifications and one independent hands-on review by François Richard at Son-Vidéo.com, published 12 August 2026. It is not based on our own lab measurements, and where the review is cited, its observations are the reviewer’s, not universal conclusions.

What the projector is

Leica positions the Cine Compact 1 as a compact 4K DLP projector built around three elements: a direct triple RGB laser light source, a Leica Summicron zoom lens, and Leica Image Optimization (LIO) image processing. It adds VIDAA streaming, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay and Dolby Vision support, a 360-degree rotating body, and automatic image adjustment. Those features are described on Leica Camera’s US product page.

Published specifications

The figures below come from Leica’s May 2026 technical data sheet, which states that specifications may change. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The full sheet is available as the Cine Compact 1 Technical Data PDF (May 2026).

Brightness in a living room

The 1,700-lumen figure is Leica’s maximum, and it applies to Ultra mode. It is not a measured typical brightness for everyday viewing, and the independent review cited here does not report a lab brightness reading.

The reviewer found that ambient light reduced both contrast and intensity, and that brightness became the limiting factor as room light increased. The projector performed best in a dark room. In practical terms, a living room with daylight through the windows or lights on behind the screen is a poor match. A better setup is an evening room with blinds closed and lights off or dimmed.

Leica CINE-COMPACT-1 4K Laser Streaming Smart Projector (2026)
  • LEICA OPTICAL EXCELLENCE — A Leica Summicron aspherical zoom lens, triple RGB laser, and Leica Image Optimization (LIO) combine with true 4K resolution, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision for sharp, vividly colored, high-contrast images.
  • UP TO 220" OF BRILLIANT PROJECTION — 1,700 ANSI lumens brightness scales your picture from a compact 60" in bright rooms to a full 220" cinematic display after dark — indoors or outside.
  • 360° FLEXIBLE, FULLY AUTOMATIC SETUP — The full-metal swing system rotates a complete 360°, letting you project on walls, ceilings, from a desk, or on the included Floor Stand adapter. Autofocus, auto keystone correction, and auto screen framing align the image with zero manual adjustment.
  • SMART, ALL-IN-ONE ENTERTAINMENT — Built-in VIDAA smart OS gives instant access to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and YouTube, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.4, Apple AirPlay, and Apple HomeKit for seamless streaming and casting — no extra devices required.
  • PREMIUM SOUND, PREMIUM DESIGN — Integrated 0.75L speakers with Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS Virtual:X deliver clear, balanced audio, housed in a timeless one-piece aluminum body with a glass front built to last — backed by a 3-year Leica warranty.

Placement: wall, ceiling and automatic setup

The 360-degree rotation is central to Leica’s pitch: the projector can be pointed at a wall or at a ceiling. The cited review evaluates focus and keystone correction, which worked effectively on first use. It also found that automatic screen framing needed manual adjustment. The review does not report results for ceiling projection, so check the geometry and focus yourself after mounting.

Throw ratio governs how far the projector must sit from the screen. Divide the distance by the image width: at the optical throw ratio of 1.0, a 100-inch-wide image (about 2.2 m) is projected from roughly 2.2 m away, and at 1.3 it is about 2.9 m. The digital throw ratio range (1.3–3.2) applies to digital zoom and is less relevant for image quality.

A practical setup sequence:

  1. Choose a stable surface or mounting point that gives the throw distance you need for your target image size.
  2. If you use Leica’s Floor Stand 1, Leica states the projector is compatible with it using the supplied adapter.
  3. Run the automatic focus and keystone correction, then check the image edges.
  4. Adjust screen framing manually, since the review found automatic framing was not reliable on its own.
  5. Recheck brightness and contrast at the time of day you plan to watch.

The cited review used a Lumene Coliseum UHD 4K motorized screen. A screen is optional, and this model is not the only one that would work with the projector.

Smart TV, apps and connections

VIDAA is the built-in platform. The reviewer described the interface as responsive, and the apps installed during that review were Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and YouTube. App availability can vary by region and software version, so confirm the apps you use in your country before buying.

A single HDMI input is the main compromise. The reviewer’s view is that it suits one main source, and that multiple sources need a receiver or hub. The options are:

  1. Use VIDAA apps for streaming and connect only one external device, such as a Blu-ray player or game console.
  2. Add an AV receiver with several HDMI inputs and feed the projector from it, which the reviewer suggested as the source hub.
  3. Use a standalone HDMI switch if you do not need receiver features such as audio decoding or speaker management.

What the independent review observed

François Richard’s review at Son-Vidéo.com used a Lumene Coliseum UHD 4K motorized screen, a Magnetar UDP800 4K Blu-ray player and a PlayStation 5. Test content included Spears & Munsil Ultra HD Benchmark disc patterns, films, games and streamed video, viewed under several ambient-light conditions.

Leica CINE-PLAY-STAND Projector Stand for Leica Cine Play
  • Compatible with the Leica Cine Compact 1 via the adapter included with the projector.
  • Elegant Cable Solution: Designed for the Cine Play 1 with its integrated pin-contact system, ensuring a tidy environment with no visible cables.
  • Optimal Flexibility: The stand floor allows you to easily adjust the position of your projector.
  • Stylish Design: The Floor Stand 1 combines elegance and functionality, transforming your Leica smart-mini-projector into a modern piece.

The reviewer praised the image precision, natural-looking colour and HDR rendering. Those are his observations from that setup, not measured results. The review also draws comparisons with the Hisense C3 and Xgimi Horizon 20. The comparison sections are useful for context, but the article does not reproduce a measured head-to-head table, so read them in the original review before deciding.

The full review is available on Son-Vidéo.com.

Claims versus evidence

  • Brightness, contrast and latency figures are Leica specifications. The cited review does not confirm them as measured values.
  • Projection life of up to 25,000 hours is a Leica product-page claim. The cited review does not assess lifespan.
  • Ása Steinars endorsement, which Leica quotes on its product page, is promotional testimony from an adventure content creator in Iceland. It is not a controlled test.
  • Automatic focus and keystone were described as effective by the reviewer. Automatic screen framing was not, and needed manual correction.

Price and availability

Leica announced the projector on 2 June 2026, with a release date of 18 June 2026 and a recommended retail price of €1,645 for Europe and several other named regions. Japan availability was scheduled to follow in July. Read Leica’s UK press announcement for the launch details.

Leica Camera USA’s retail page displayed $1,995 when checked on 7 October 2026. That is a dated retailer observation, not a fixed or universal price. Check your local Leica store or authorised retailer for current pricing and stock before you buy.

Who should buy it

It suits you if:

  • you watch mainly in a dark or dimmed room;
  • you want streaming apps without a separate streaming device;
  • you need flexible placement and do not have a fixed screen position;
  • you use one main source, or you are willing to add a receiver or HDMI switch.

It is a weaker fit if:

  • you plan to watch in a bright living room with daylight or room lights on;
  • you need several HDMI sources and do not want extra hardware;
  • you need independently measured brightness figures before buying.

When comparing it with other compact projectors, check brightness in the light you actually use, the throw range and zoom, how accurately automatic framing works, HDR format support, HDMI input count and eARC behaviour, integrated audio (the sources here do not quantify it), whether a carrying case is included, and current regional price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
