A Ledger PIN unlocks a specific Ledger signer; the Secret Recovery Phrase is a backup credential used to restore access to its associated accounts if that signer is lost, damaged, or reset. They are not interchangeable. A PIN is dangerous if someone has both it and the signer, while a copied recovery phrase can be used to access the accounts without the original device.

What does a Ledger PIN protect?
The PIN controls access to the particular signer on which it is set. It is not a backup of the phrase and cannot restore accounts on a replacement or reset signer. Ledger says someone with both the PIN and signer can access the accounts.
Ledger says that three incorrect PIN entries automatically reset the signer and erase its account information. If that happens, you can initialize the signer again and use the Secret Recovery Phrase to restore account access, then choose a new PIN. Can you recover a Ledger without the PIN?
If you have the Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore access after resetting or replacing the signer and set a new PIN during initialization. If you have neither a usable signer and PIN nor the recovery phrase or another recovery arrangement, the PIN alone cannot serve as a backup.

What does the Secret Recovery Phrase protect?
The phrase is the recovery credential for the accounts associated with it. Its usefulness in restoring access also makes it highly sensitive: Ledger warns that anyone with the phrase can access the accounts. Keep the phrase private and offline. Do not type it into a website, support chat, phone, or computer connected to the internet. Store a physical copy where it is protected from unauthorized access, loss, and damage; Ledger discusses paper and metal backups, with metal intended to better withstand the elements. A durable backup still has to be kept secure: anyone who can read the phrase may use it.

What if someone gets the phrase but not the Ledger?
The phrase can be used as a recovery credential, so possession of the signer is not the only risk. Treat any exposed phrase as compromised; do not assume that a device PIN will protect accounts whose recovery phrase has been copied.
How to choose and protect a backup
For the core setup, protect both credentials for their different roles: keep the PIN from someone who could access the signer, and keep the phrase private and recoverable if the signer is lost, damaged, or reset. The phrase is the crucial user-held route for restoring access, so a forgotten PIN and a lost phrase are not equivalent problems.

- Protect against unauthorized access: memorize the PIN if practical, and do not store it in cloud services or on an internet-connected device. Keep the phrase offline and never share it.
- Protect against physical loss or damage: preserve a secure phrase backup. Ledger suggests a metal backup for greater resistance to the elements; choose storage that does not make the phrase accessible to others.
- Consider the recovery trade-off: compare who can access a backup, what happens if it is lost or damaged, how recovery is initiated, and whether recovery depends on a Ledger device or an external service. No option removes every risk.
How Ledger Recovery Key differs from the signer PIN
Ledger describes Recovery Key as a physical backup card that stores a copy of a 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase in a Secure Element and is protected by its own user-defined PIN. The card communicates with compatible Ledger hardware through NFC; it cannot manage assets or sign transactions. The card PIN and signer PIN protect different things: one protects the physical backup card, and the other unlocks the signer. Recovery Key is a backup option, not a replacement for understanding how the phrase works. Compatibility, availability, and included bundles can change, so check Ledger’s current product information for your device and region before relying on it.

How Ledger Recover differs from a phrase backup
Ledger Recover is an optional, identity-based recovery service, distinct from keeping a user-controlled phrase copy. Ledger says the service splits encrypted fragments among three separate companies and requires two fragments to restore keys on a Ledger device.
