No lighting type is best for every reef tank. Choose by how well a specific fixture lights the coral positions in your aquarium, then weigh coverage, heat, electricity use, maintenance, controls, appearance, and cost. LED, T5 fluorescent, and metal halide can all be suitable; the fixture and tank setup matter more than the category name.
What matters more than the lighting label
Start with the tank’s length, width, and depth, and note where corals will sit. Light at the brightest point is not a measure of how evenly the rest of the aquarium is lit. Compare PAR readings at several positions and at a mounting height comparable to your intended setup. A PAR map can help show whether a fixture provides broad, even coverage or a gradient that suits your coral placement.
- Coverage: Check light distribution across the full footprint, including the ends and lower areas—not just a peak PAR figure.
- Tank geometry: Fixture length, mounting height, reflectors or optics, and water depth all affect where light lands.
- Heat and power: Consider the aquarium’s heat-management needs as well as electrical consumption. Wattage alone does not establish how much usable light reaches the corals.
- Ownership: Account for controls, compatible replacement lamps, service life, and the cost of maintaining the particular fixture.
- Appearance: Some directional lighting can create visible contrast or “scalloping.” Whether that look is desirable is a matter of preference and placement.
Do not treat a spectrum label or a seller’s “equivalent to” claim as a substitute for comparable PAR and coverage information. If you change fixtures or intensity, do not assume a broad comparison between technologies establishes a safe change for corals already accustomed to a different setup.
How the three types compare
| Lighting type | Potential strengths | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| LED | Retailer guidance describes LEDs as efficient, with smart-control options and little heat transferred to the water. Many offer dimming or automated schedules, depending on the model. | Confirm actual spread and PAR at the planned height; directional output can produce uneven contrast. Check product-specific service life and warranty rather than assuming all fixtures have the same maintenance needs. |
| T5 fluorescent | A multi-lamp fixture can provide a broad, elongated distribution; the result depends on fixture length and configuration. | Check the lamp combination, footprint coverage, compatible tube availability, and replacement cost. The sources reviewed do not establish a current controlled comparison of T5 heat or operating cost against the other types. |
| Metal halide | A reflector-and-lamp setup can produce broad coverage; the historical example below showed a wider pattern than the particular LEDs tested at a specified PAR threshold. | Evaluate the reflector, lamp, mounting height, heat effects, and coverage together. Verify lamp and ballast compatibility and current availability for the system you are considering. |
These are fixture-level considerations, not guarantees about every product in a technology category. In particular, the available comparison does not establish a current, controlled ranking of contemporary fixtures.

What one historical fixture test can—and cannot—show
Reefs.com Magazine’s “Quantitative Comparison of Lighting Technologies: Metal Halide, T5 Fluorescent and LED” measured specific fixtures. Its figures illustrate why power consumption and peak PAR should be compared under stated conditions, not generalized to every LED, T5, or metal-halide system:
| Tested setup | Measured power | Reported peak PAR |
|---|---|---|
| 250 W double-ended Ushio 14,000 K metal-halide lamp with LumenMax 3 reflector | 306 W | 278 µmol/m²/s at the article’s stated measurement position |
| ATI Power Module, 36 inches, with six 39 W T5 lamps | 254 W | 220 µmol/m²/s at the article’s stated measurement position |
| 24-inch Eco-Lamps KR92 LED fixture | 110 W | 224 µmol/m²/s at the article’s 24-inch measurement position |
The LED and T5 examples had similar reported peak readings, but that does not mean they lit the same area. The article reported different distribution shapes, and the tested metal-halide reflector produced a broader pattern than the tested LED fixtures at the chosen PAR threshold. Those results describe these particular configurations, not an inherent advantage for every reflector or a present-day product benchmark. The article is historical and includes equipment such as the PFO Solaris I5, which is no longer in production.

Choose an LED when control and lower heat transfer are priorities
LEDs are a reasonable starting point if you value dimming, scheduling, or potential reductions in heat transferred into the water. Treat those as possible product benefits, not promises about every fixture. Before choosing, look for a PAR map or measure several coral positions in your aquarium, and decide whether the fixture’s spread and visual contrast suit the tank.

Consider T5 when its coverage and upkeep suit the setup
A T5 fixture may fit a tank whose dimensions align with the fixture’s length and distribution. Judge the specific lamp arrangement and coverage rather than assuming the technology is uniformly spread in every installation. Include tube replacement and availability in the ownership comparison.
Consider metal halide when the complete system fits
A metal-halide setup may suit an aquarist whose chosen lamp, reflector, mounting arrangement, and heat management work for the tank. The historical measurements show that one such system drew more power than the LED and T5 examples, but they are not sufficient to predict the consumption or coverage of a different system.

Make the comparison before you buy
- Record the tank dimensions and coral locations. Note the depth as well as the length and width; identify where you need light and whether you want even coverage or a gradient.
- Compare fixture-level evidence. Seek PAR maps or multi-point readings for the model at a similar mounting height and footprint. Do not use a single peak reading as a proxy for full-tank coverage.
- Calculate ownership needs. Compare the particular fixtures’ electrical draw, heat-management implications, replacement lamps or other maintenance, controls, warranty, and purchase cost. The available sources do not provide a current controlled heat or operating-cost comparison across the three types, or a current price survey.
- Check coral-light claims carefully. Red Sea says photosynthetic organisms provide “up to 85%” of the nutrition for most corals. This is the manufacturer’s stated figure, not an independently verified universal percentage. It underscores why appropriate light matters, but does not identify a universally best fixture.
- Verify current product details. Availability, specifications, and compatibility are model-specific; confirm them with the manufacturer or seller for the exact fixture and tank configuration.
