PnP PowerShell is another option for Microsoft 365 and SharePoint automation, but it is community-provided rather than a Microsoft-supported replacement. Once you choose the right tool, learn the core pattern: install, connect, inspect returned objects, make a focused change, and verify the result.
How do I use PowerShell with SharePoint?
There is no single “SharePoint PowerShell” module for every deployment. Microsoft documents separate paths for SharePoint in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Server, alongside the community-maintained PnP PowerShell project. Choose the environment and task first, then use the corresponding commands and documentation. Microsoft’s SharePoint PowerShell hub links to the relevant references.
| Environment or tool | When it fits | Documentation and support context |
|---|---|---|
| SharePoint Online Management Shell | Administrative tasks for SharePoint in Microsoft 365, including tenant-level operations. | Microsoft’s module and cmdlet documentation; see the getting-started guide. |
| SharePoint Server PowerShell | Administration of an on-premises SharePoint Server deployment. | Use the documentation for the installed SharePoint Server version. The Server PowerShell overview describes its object-based model. |
| PnP PowerShell | Tasks supported by PnP cmdlets, including site design and broader Microsoft 365 automation scenarios. | Community-provided; Microsoft Learn says it has no Microsoft SLA or direct Microsoft support. Check the PnP PowerShell overview and the current reference for the cmdlet you need. |
These tool families are not interchangeable. A command that works with SharePoint Online Management Shell may not exist in SharePoint Server PowerShell or PnP PowerShell, and their authentication and runtime requirements differ. Select based on the target environment, the task’s scope, the available authentication method, and the support model—not just a familiar cmdlet name.
What is a SharePoint PowerShell object?
A cmdlet usually returns an object: structured data representing something PowerShell can inspect or pass to another command. In SharePoint Server, Microsoft describes returned SharePoint objects as based on .NET Framework. You can save a returned object in a variable for later use or send it through the pipeline to another command. The object model is the useful mental model; the implementation details for Server should not be assumed to describe SharePoint Online modules.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Save a result in a variable
Conceptually, a command can retrieve a SharePoint item and assign the result to a variable:
$item = Get-SomeSharePointObject
Get-SomeSharePointObject is illustrative, not a real cmdlet. Use the actual retrieval cmdlet documented for your environment and task. Once assigned, $item contains the result for inspection or use in another command.
Pass a result through the pipeline
PowerShell’s pipeline can pass an object directly from one cmdlet to the next:

This is also a conceptual example, not executable SharePoint syntax. The receiving cmdlet must accept the object type produced by the first cmdlet. Consult that cmdlet’s current reference before composing a pipeline or changing data.
How do I connect to SharePoint Online PowerShell?
For SharePoint in Microsoft 365, Microsoft’s documented management-shell path is to install or update Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell, then connect to the tenant’s SharePoint admin endpoint. The account needs the SharePoint Administrator or SharePoint Embedded Administrator role for Connect-SPOService, according to its cmdlet reference.
Install or update the module
Use an elevated or otherwise appropriately configured PowerShell session, and follow Microsoft’s current setup guide for prerequisites and installation choices. These commands check for installed versions, update an installed module, or install it for the current user:

Install-Module -Name Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell -Scope CurrentUser
The install command is an alternative for a current-user installation; it is not a command you need to run after every update. If you use PowerShell 7, Microsoft’s guide specifically instructs you to import the module with Windows PowerShell compatibility:
Import-Module Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell -UseWindowsPowerShell

Connect with the URL for your tenant’s SharePoint admin center, replacing the example value with your actual endpoint:

One session can hold one SharePoint Online service connection per geo; making another connection replaces the existing connection in that session. Plan scripts that work across geographies accordingly, and reconnect to the intended admin endpoint before running tenant commands.

The management shell is Microsoft’s module for SharePoint Online administration. PnP PowerShell is a separate, community-provided module with cmdlets for SharePoint and broader Microsoft 365 automation. The right choice depends on whether the needed cmdlet supports the target and operation, how you will authenticate, and whether the community support model is acceptable.
| Decision point | SharePoint Online Management Shell | PnP PowerShell |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and support | Microsoft module with Microsoft documentation. | Community-provided. Microsoft Learn describes it as an open-source library with community support and states it has no Microsoft SLA or direct Microsoft support. |
| Task fit | SharePoint Online administrative cmdlets. Check the specific cmdlet reference for the operation. | More than 700 cmdlets, according to the Microsoft Learn overview last updated 2026-03-16; the count can change. Check the current cmdlet reference for task coverage. |
| Connection pattern | Connect-SPOService connects to a SharePoint admin endpoint before other module cmdlets. |
Connect-PnPOnline establishes a PnP connection; authentication options and requirements depend on the current module guidance. |
| Runtime considerations | Microsoft’s setup guide says PowerShell 7 users should import this module with -UseWindowsPowerShell. |
The Microsoft Learn overview describes PnP PowerShell as .NET 8-based. Confirm current runtime and installation requirements in its documentation. |
Microsoft Learn summarizes PnP’s status this way: “This library is an open-source and community-provided library with an active community providing support for it.” That community support does not make PnP a Microsoft-provided module or extend Microsoft’s support commitment to it.

How do I use scripts to automate SharePoint administration?
Build automation as a sequence: install the appropriate module, connect to the right environment, inspect the returned objects, make the smallest necessary change, and verify the outcome. Start with read-only commands while learning a new module or working against an unfamiliar tenant. The examples below show a documented PnP site-script workflow; use it only where site scripts are relevant to your task.
Read site scripts with PnP PowerShell
The PnP documentation demonstrates installing the module, connecting, and reading site scripts with Get-PnPSiteScript. Follow the current site design and PnP PowerShell guidance for prerequisites and connection details:
Install-Module PnP.PowerShell
Connect-PnPOnline
Get-PnPSiteScript
Supply the connection parameters required by your authentication setup when connecting. Before using the returned data as an input to another operation, inspect it and confirm the target and the expected object type. This retrieval example is a read operation; it does not change a site.
Make a focused change and verify it
The site-design guidance covers creating, retrieving, updating, and removing site designs or site scripts. Those actions can affect configuration, so use the exact current syntax and parameters from the relevant cmdlet reference rather than adapting a read command by guesswork. Before running a change, confirm the intended site or tenant, the permissions required, and whether the operation can be reversed. Afterward, retrieve the affected item again and check the fields or state that should have changed.
Quick Recap
Use a safety check before running a script
- Use the least privilege that permits the specific task.
- Inspect retrieved objects and confirm the target before invoking a changing cmdlet.
- Keep changes narrow; avoid broad operations when a specific site, design, or object will do.
- Keep credentials and certificates out of script text and source control; use an organization-approved authentication method.
- Verify the result by reading the relevant object or state after the operation.
- Check current module and cmdlet documentation when runtime, authentication, or syntax may have changed.
