Intro to Storybook is Storybook’s free, code-based tutorial for learning to build UI components in isolation. You create Taskbox, a task-management interface, and work from individual component states up to screens, then explore deployment, visual testing, and accessibility testing. Choose the tutorial edition that matches your project: React, React Native, Vue, Angular, or Svelte.
What you learn in Intro to Storybook
The course is organized into 10 chapters. It takes you from initial setup through component and screen construction, then introduces deployment and testing topics:
- Set up Storybook in your development environment.
- Build a simple component.
- Combine components into a composite component.
- Add data to components.
- Construct a screen out of components.
- Deploy the work.
- Explore visual testing.
- Explore accessibility testing.
- Review the project in the conclusion.
- Learn how to contribute.
The example application, Taskbox, is a task-management UI. Chapters link to working commits, which can help you compare your code with the tutorial’s progress if your implementation gets out of sync.
How the component-driven workflow works
Start with one component and its states
Rather than beginning with an entire application screen, the tutorial starts with a component that can be developed on its own. You describe its appearances and behaviors as stories, making different states easy to inspect. In the Taskbox example, a task can appear in states such as default, pinned, and archived.

Compose components, then add data
Once a component’s states are represented, you combine it with related components and provide data. The Vue and Angular examples use mocked data and story permutations so you can inspect variations without first running the whole application.
Build screens from the smaller pieces
The screen chapter moves upward from components to a larger view. This bottom-up sequence lets complexity grow gradually and makes it easier to explore UI permutations in a focused setting. It improves visibility into component states; it does not, by itself, guarantee a bug-free interface.

Choose the tutorial edition that matches your project

Setup instructions and commands differ by edition and can change. Follow the matching edition’s setup chapter rather than assuming React instructions apply to another framework. For current Storybook integration support—including frameworks and integrations beyond those editions—check the current Storybook documentation. Product support listings do not necessarily mean the tutorial offers equally extensive coverage for every integration.
Do you need to pay to follow the tutorial?
No. Storybook’s official documentation describes it as open source and free, and the tutorial catalog presents its guides as free, in-depth guides with code samples. The course does not require a paid service to complete. Your practical requirements are a development environment and familiarity with the framework edition you choose; consult that edition’s setup instructions for specific prerequisites.

What visual testing adds to the workflow
Visual testing is one of the later topics, after the course has introduced components and screens. It helps you examine how a rendered interface looks as the UI changes; accessibility testing is a separate chapter focused on accessibility. Those topics extend the component workflow rather than replacing careful implementation and review.

Can I use the tutorial if I am not building Taskbox?
Yes. Taskbox is the teaching example. The workflow—isolated components, stories for states, composition, and then screens—can inform work on other interfaces.
Does Storybook support more frameworks than the tutorial editions listed here?
Its current product documentation lists a broader range of frameworks and integrations. Check those docs for current compatibility, and use the tutorial edition list to understand which editions this course provides; do not assume every integration has the same tutorial depth.
