If your goal is to improve your own League of Legends play, coaching is the better fit. A boost can raise the rank shown on your account, but another player earned that result. Coaching keeps you in the game and gives you feedback you can apply to your own decisions. Riot’s published policy also makes boosting a risky choice: account sharing and rank manipulation can lead to penalties.
What is the difference between boosting and coaching?
Riot describes boosting as a more skilled player logging into someone else’s account to play ranked and inflate its MMR. In a boost, the other player—not the account owner—plays the ranked games. Coaching, as used here, means feedback, explanation, or game review while you remain the player on your account.
| Comparison | Rank boosting | Coaching |
|---|---|---|
| Who plays ranked? | Another player logs into your account and plays. | You play; the coach provides instruction or reviews your games. |
| What you receive | A rank or MMR change on the account. | Feedback and explanations you can apply in later games. |
| Does the result show your own play? | No. The boosted games were played by someone else. | Yes. You are the player whose decisions and execution are being developed. |
| Policy implications | Account sharing and rank manipulation can result in penalties under Riot’s policies. | The cited Riot policies do not establish an endorsement of coaching services; coaching that does not involve account sharing is distinct from having someone else play ranked on your account. |
Which option is better for improving your own play?
Coaching is the more defensible choice if “improving” means becoming better at playing yourself. It can direct your attention to decisions, habits, and mistakes in your own games. A boosted rank does not show that you can reproduce the performance, because another player earned it. This is a practical difference between the options, not the result of a controlled study comparing improvement rates.

That distinction matters even if a boost temporarily places your account at a higher rank: you still have to play the games that follow. If your own performance has not changed, you may struggle to maintain that rank. Coaching cannot guarantee a climb either, but it is designed to give you information you can use while you play.

Why does boosting carry account risk?
Riot’s Account Penalties and Enforcement FAQ says account sharing and selling violate its Terms of Service and can result in bans. Riot classifies solo boosting and hitchhiking or queue boosting among forms of rank manipulation, and its Community Pact says detected rank manipulation can be penalized.
Riot’s FAQ states that account-sharing punishments began on September 9, 2025 (Patch 25.18), and penalty linking began on November 19, 2025 (Patch 25.23). Riot also says its Anti-Boost system privately launched on League of Legends in September 2025. Riot describes the system as detecting cases where a higher-rated player logs into an account and earns a significant amount of its ranked points by performing beyond the usual player’s skill level. That is Riot’s description of the system, not a guarantee that every violation will be detected.

Riot’s FAQ says its goal is to get boosting out of League and that it has a thorough system for detecting accounts with high accuracy. This is Riot’s stated enforcement position; it does not establish that enforcement catches every case. Riot’s developer policy also says products may not offer MMR/ELO boosting or account exchanges. None of these policies should be read as Riot endorsing any coaching provider.

Riot’s sources establish how it defines boosting and describe policy consequences and its enforcement approach. They do not provide a controlled comparison showing how much faster coaching improves rank than boosting, or a percentage chance of climbing after coaching. The practical recommendation follows from the objective: coaching keeps you as the player and offers feedback you can use; boosting changes the account’s rank through someone else’s play and carries policy risk.
