League of Legends esports does not have one universal roster or eligibility rule for every region. Rules depend on the league and season. The clearest current example here is the 2026 LCK/LCK Challengers League (LCK CL) rulebook, revised August 19, 2026, and effective September 18, 2026. Its roster limits, age thresholds and call-up procedures apply to the LCK system—not automatically to the LCS, LEC, LPL, CBLOL or LCP.
The practical distinction is between a team’s registered roster and the five players it enters for a particular match. A registered player is not automatically free to move between match entries: deadlines, roster rules and league approval can restrict changes.
Which League of Legends esports roster rules apply?
Riot’s 2026 handbook identifies regional leagues including the LCS, CBLOL, LEC, LCK, LPL and LCP, but it is a season and event guide rather than a detailed roster-eligibility code. The LCK/LCK CL rulebook supplies specific current requirements for those two competitions. It should not be used to infer rules for another league.
For any region, check the rulebook for the specific league and season. In particular, age eligibility, roster size, registration deadlines, match entries, substitutions, residency or work authorization, and playoff restrictions can differ. A 2024 LCS/NACL rulebook is historical context, not proof of 2026 LCS policy.

Who is eligible to play in the 2026 LCK and LCK CL?
Minimum age
Under the 2026 LCK/LCK CL rulebook, a player must be at least 17 to compete in an LCK match and at least 15 to compete in an LCK CL match. These are separate thresholds for the Korean competitions, not global League esports age limits.
Work status and other eligibility checks
Players must be legally able to work in South Korea as players. Non-resident players must provide requested documents, including visa or stay-status evidence, by the integrated-roster registration deadline. The rulebook also requires an eligible personal account for the Korean League of Legends server and sets additional requirements for non-residents. The league office can review eligibility and deny participation if requirements are not met.

How large can an LCK/LCK CL roster be?
The integrated roster serves the LCK/LCK CL system. It is different from the five-player entry submitted for an individual regular match.
| Roster or match entry | 2026 LCK/LCK CL rule |
|---|---|
| Integrated roster | 11–20 players. At least six must meet the LCK age threshold, and at least five must qualify for the LCK minimum-salary provision. |
| LCK regular match entry | Five players selected from the integrated roster. |
| LCK CL regular match entry | Five players selected from the integrated roster or the optional CL sub-roster. |
| Optional LCK CL sub-roster | Up to five players, subject to rulebook conditions. Players registered only on this sub-roster may compete in LCK CL, not LCK. |
| LCK playoff roster | 5–10 players. The LCK CL playoff roster has separate player and staff requirements. |
All figures in this table are requirements in the 2026 LCK/LCK CL rulebook, revised August 19 and effective September 18, 2026. The rulebook also limits duplicate registration across playoff rosters, so teams cannot freely share all personnel between the LCK and LCK CL playoff groups.

How do substitutions and match entries work?
Match entries are submitted for each match
A regular LCK entry has five players from the integrated roster; a regular LCK CL entry has five from the integrated roster or CL sub-roster. Teams submit a separate entry for each match by the deadline that applies to that event. If the same team plays both LCK and LCK CL on one day, a player cannot appear on both match entries that day.
Roster changes are controlled by deadlines
After a roster submission, adding or changing registered players is generally prohibited until the next submission deadline. The rulebook provides limited exceptions, including approved trades outside a trade-ban window. A team may remove a player during competition only if it still satisfies the required roster composition.

Emergency call-ups require approval
An emergency call-up is not an unrestricted tactical substitution. The LCK rulebook allows league-approved call-ups under specified conditions, including when a player cannot play for reasons outside the team’s or player’s control and the replacement meets qualification requirements. During the group, regular-round and play-in stages, the described academy call-up route is restricted to LCK CL matches. Separate emergency call-up provisions apply in playoffs.
These roster and call-up provisions do not, by themselves, establish a universal in-series substitution procedure. The permitted timing and process for replacing a player during a particular series must be checked in that competition’s event rules.

How do contracts and the official roster record affect eligibility?
In the 2026 LCK/LCK CL rulebook, player contracts require league approval. An unapproved contract is not valid under the rulebook, and a player without a valid approved contract may be refused participation. Registered players and coaches must also be included in Riot’s Global Contract Database; for covered entries, the database listing is treated as the latest roster record.
Riot’s 2024 LCS information page linked to the Global Contract Database and 2024 regional rules. That historical link does not establish the current 2026 LCS contract or roster process.
What should players and fans verify before relying on a roster claim?
- League and season: Confirm the competition and the year of its rulebook; do not transfer an LCK figure to another region.
- Eligibility: Check age, work authorization or residency documentation, account requirements, and any other player-specific conditions.
- Roster status: Distinguish the full registered roster, any developmental sub-roster, the playoff roster and the five-player match entry.
- Timing and exceptions: Check submission deadlines, trade restrictions, call-up qualification rules and whether league approval is required.
- Current record: For LCK/LCK CL covered entries, verify contract approval and the Global Contract Database listing.
Riot’s September 8, 2026 update notice said that parts of the LCK/LCK CL rulebook were revised ahead of the 2026 offseason, including contract-term rules and the competitive spending framework. Use the rulebook in force for the event rather than relying on an older summary.
