Layoutit Grid is a browser-based CSS Grid generator that lets you draw a layout, change its rows, columns, gaps and placements, and copy the resulting HTML and CSS. It is most useful as a visual laboratory: make a small change, inspect the declaration it produces, then use a conceptual guide such as MDN to understand why the layout behaves that way. Treat the generated snippet as a starting point to review, not as a complete guarantee that a production layout is responsive or otherwise ready to ship.
What Layoutit Grid does
CSS Grid is a two-dimensional layout system. It arranges content across both rows and columns, unlike a one-direction layout model that primarily handles a row or a column.
Layoutit puts that model behind an interactive editor. The current generator exposes controls for explicit and implicit grid settings, row and column gaps, item placement and an area box. A live result shows HTML and CSS that you can copy. Interface labels and available controls may change as the project evolves, so use the visible editor as the authoritative description of the current release.
The project README describes generators as a learning aid and says they can be “a stepping stone when you are learning new concepts.” That is the right expectation: the tool shortens the distance between a visual idea and a CSS example, while documentation supplies the underlying rules.

A visual CSS Grid learning loop
Use the generator in short experiments rather than trying to build an entire application in one pass.
- Start with a small layout. Use a handful of items, such as a header, navigation, main content and sidebar. Fewer items make each change easier to interpret.
- Choose the tracks. Adjust the number and sizing of columns and rows. These tracks are the horizontal and vertical lanes that make up the grid.
- Change the gutters. Set row and column gaps and watch the space between tracks change. A gap is not an extra grid item; it is the gutter separating adjacent tracks.
- Place items. Move items to different cells or extend them across multiple tracks. Compare the visual result with the placement declarations in the generated CSS.
- Label or define areas. When the area controls are available, give meaningful regions names and compare the visual map with the resulting
grid-template-areasandgrid-areadeclarations. - Inspect the output. Read the HTML and CSS panes instead of copying them blindly. Identify the grid container, its track definition, gaps and each item’s placement.
- Rebuild one change yourself. Copy a declaration into a small local example, alter its value manually and predict the result before refreshing. This turns visual trial and error into transferable CSS knowledge.
Grid vocabulary to learn while you experiment

MDN’s Grid material also treats nesting and layering as part of the broader model. After you understand a single container, try a grid inside a grid item, then examine which container owns each declaration.

How to read the generated CSS
Begin at the element that acts as the grid container. Look for display: grid, then identify the declarations that answer four questions:
- How many tracks exist? Check the row and column template declarations.
- How much space is between them? Check
gap,row-gapandcolumn-gap. - Where does each item go? Check line-based properties such as
grid-columnandgrid-row, or an area-basedgrid-area. - What happens when content needs more tracks? Check implicit-grid rules and remember that automatically created tracks are different from tracks you explicitly declared.
Then read the HTML. Confirm that the selectors in the CSS match the elements you intend to lay out, and remove demonstration-only markup before integrating the example into your project. If you cannot explain a declaration, pause the experiment and look up that property in a maintained reference.

A productive sequence is to make a change in Layoutit, read the emitted declaration, and then consult MDN for the term or rule behind it. Reversing the sequence also works when you already know the property you want to test.
What the generator cannot establish for you
A visually correct arrangement in the editor does not by itself prove that the result meets every requirement of a real site. The available material does not establish automatic solutions for every responsive design case, accessibility requirement, content length, browser target or production integration. Review the emitted code against those needs.

- Test layouts with the actual text, images and content sizes your page will receive.
- Decide deliberately how tracks should change at the viewport sizes your design supports; do not assume a generated arrangement is a responsive strategy.
- Check source order, keyboard flow, semantics and other accessibility concerns in your own markup.
- Remove unnecessary declarations and adapt class names, structure and design tokens to your codebase.
- Verify behavior in the browsers and environments your project supports.
A practical first exercise
Create a four-region page: a full-width header, a navigation column, a main article region and a sidebar. Start with two columns and one row, then add rows and reposition the regions. Increase the column gap, name the regions, and inspect how the generated CSS changes. Finally, recreate the same arrangement in a blank stylesheet without the generator. If you can predict which declaration changes before moving an item, you are learning the model rather than memorizing a snippet.
Project context
Leniolabs announced a version 2 release on June 8, 2021, describing support for most CSS Grid specification features at that time. That announcement is historical context, not evidence that the current editor implements every present-day Grid feature. For current behavior, rely on the live generator and verify unfamiliar declarations in current CSS documentation. CSS-Tricks’ October 15, 2020 overview likewise documents the earlier visual-editor-and-code-feedback approach; it should not be read as a current feature list.
