Launch price is the announced starting or introductory price around a product’s release; street price is what retailers are actually offering at a particular time. These are useful market terms, not universally standardized legal definitions. For a purchase decision, the current, comparable offer—not an old launch figure or suggested price—is the figure that matters.
Why the two prices can differ
A launch announcement gives a reference point, but it does not guarantee what a shopper will pay later. Retailers set their own offers, and prices can change over time or vary between online and local-store channels. A suggested retail price (MSRP) is a recommendation, not necessarily the market’s prevailing price or the transaction price. Google, for example, defines suggested retail price as a manufacturer-provided suggested price in its product data (Google Manufacturer Center).
Target says online and local-store prices may differ. Its own “Was” label is based on a 90-day median offered price and excludes sales, clearance, and limited-time promotions; that is Target’s particular method, not a universal retail rule (Target price labels).

Price labels may cover different costs
Check what each figure includes before comparing it. The distinction is especially clear in vehicle pricing, where a base price may leave out options and add-ons, while an MSRP may include recommended options and features. Taxes, delivery, and other charges can change the amount due. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains these vehicle price components and MSRP (CFPB vehicle price definitions).

For US vehicle advertising, FTC staff guidance says dealer-required charges must be included in the advertised price, except government-required charges paid directly to the government. This is vehicle-advertising guidance, not a rule for every product category or jurisdiction (FTC automobile pricing FAQs). More broadly, the FTC has said it aims to ensure the advertised price is the actual price consumers will pay, apart from required government charges such as taxes.
How to compare a launch price with a current offer
- Match the product. Confirm the exact model, configuration, storage or other options, and included accessories. A starting launch price for a base configuration is not directly comparable to a higher-spec current offer.
- Match the market and channel. Compare offers for the same location and sales channel—such as online with online—and note the date, since prices can change.
- Calculate the payable total. Include mandatory fees, taxes, delivery, and required add-ons. Separate optional extras from charges needed to complete the purchase.
- Check conditions. Note whether a rebate, incentive, or financing offer is limited to certain buyers or depends on specific terms. A headline price that you do not qualify for is not your effective offer.
- Evaluate the reference price. If a seller claims a discount from MSRP, list price, or another reference, ask whether that figure reflects a price genuinely used in the market.
Why a claimed saving can be misleading
A discount is meaningful only if its comparison price is credible. US FTC guidance cautions that a reduction from a suggested or list price may mislead if that reference does not correspond to prices at which a substantial number of sales occur (FTC Guides Against Deceptive Pricing). UK ASA advice similarly says an RRP used for a savings comparison should reflect a price generally used in the market (ASA advice on RRP comparisons). These are jurisdiction-specific sources; rules and enforcement standards differ.

There is no established general statistic for how much street prices typically differ from launch prices. A discount observed for one product, category, or date should not be treated as a typical launch-to-street reduction without comparable, dated evidence.

Which figure should guide a purchase?
Use the current offer you can actually obtain, adjusted for required costs and the options you need. Keep the launch price as context for how the product was introduced, and treat MSRP or another suggested figure as a reference rather than proof of the product’s normal selling price. The practical comparison is between like-for-like totals available to you now.
