There is no universally best method. Laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) measures ultrasound generated and detected optically, so it avoids coupling a contact probe to the part. X-ray radiography produces a two-dimensional projection, while X-ray computed tomography (CT) reconstructs cross-sections or a three-dimensional volume from multiple projections. The right choice depends on the defect you need to find, the part and its surface, the information required, inspection access and throughput, and the applicable safety and qualification requirements.
How the three inspection methods produce information
Laser ultrasonic testing: ultrasound without a contact probe
A laser excites ultrasound in the material, and optical measurement detects the resulting response. The instrument records that response rather than directly seeing a hidden flaw through the part. Some laser methods measure surface changes and infer hidden flaws from how the surface responds. Because LUT does not require a contact transducer or couplant at the measurement point, it can be useful when touching the part is impractical.
ASNT describes laser methods as useful for measuring at a distance, including on hot, fragile, moving, or difficult-to-reach surfaces. LUT has also been studied for composite and bonded structures. Those potential applications do not mean it suits every part: surface condition and the inspection environment can affect measurements, and the equipment and interpretation require specialized expertise.
Conventional X-ray radiography: a projection image
Radiography records X-rays transmitted through a part as a two-dimensional projection. It can reveal internal discontinuities and produces an inspection image that can be retained as a record. The projection combines information along the beam path, so it does not inherently show where a feature lies in depth.

Lightweight at just 720g and rugged with IP54 rating and 2m drop resistance, the FOTRIC TD2e acoustic imager includes a 5000mAh rechargeable battery for 3+ hours of continuous operation, ideal for field inspections in industrial, HVAC, or energy sectors.
Radiography is generally more responsive to volumetric material loss, such as porosity or slag, than to planar cracks. A crack’s visibility depends on its opening and its orientation relative to the beam. A poorly aligned crack may be missed; specialist techniques may provide additional depth information, but a standard projection does not.
X-ray CT: reconstructed slices or volume
CT collects multiple X-ray projections and reconstructs them into cross-sections or a three-dimensional volume. That output can help answer spatial questions a single projection cannot, including questions about internal geometry and material structure. It is especially useful when detailed characterization is needed, but a reconstructed volume is not a perfect or resolution-independent representation of the part.

Compare the methods by output and practical constraints
| Method | Signal and output | Where it may help | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laser ultrasonic testing | Laser-generated ultrasound is detected optically; measurements can be collected digitally without contacting the part. | Contact-sensitive, hot, fragile, moving, or hard-to-reach surfaces; composite and bonded-structure inspection applications. | Surface finish and environmental disturbance can affect measurements. Hidden flaws are inferred from material response. Equipment, interpretation, and laser controls require appropriate expertise. |
| X-ray radiography | Transmitted radiation forms a two-dimensional projection and an inspection record. | Internal discontinuities, particularly volumetric flaws such as porosity, when a retained image is useful. | Visibility depends on defect orientation and geometry; planar cracks can be difficult to detect. A conventional projection does not inherently locate flaws in depth. Radiation controls and suitable access for the source and detector are required. |
| X-ray CT | Multiple X-ray projections are reconstructed into cross-sections or a three-dimensional volume. | Detailed internal geometry and material characterization, including research and process-control work. | Part dimensions and geometry, scan time and cost, image artefacts, and the tradeoff between object size and small-defect resolution constrain results. |
Which inspection method is best for my part?
Start with the inspection question, not with a preferred instrument. A method that creates the desired image may still be a poor fit if the target flaw is unfavorably oriented, the part cannot be positioned as needed, or the process cannot accommodate the inspection time and controls.

- Defect type and orientation: Decide whether the target is volumetric, planar, or another discontinuity, and consider how its size, opening, and orientation affect the signal.
- Material, thickness, and geometry: Consider the part’s composition and dimensions, as well as features that complicate access, signal interpretation, or CT reconstruction.
- Access and contact: If a contact probe is impractical or the surface must not be touched, LUT’s non-contact approach may be relevant. Its suitability still depends on the surface and inspection environment.
- Required information: Choose whether the task needs a projection image, information that locates a flaw in depth, or reconstructed cross-sections or a volume. These outputs are not interchangeable.
- Throughput and economics: Account for inspection time, equipment, interpretation, and the cost of acquiring and qualifying the method for the application; the available evidence does not support a universal speed or cost ranking.
- Safety and qualification: Include the method-specific controls, operator competence, and procedure qualification required for the work.
When a combined inspection may make sense
Two methods can be complementary when they answer different questions. For example, a projection may provide a useful record of volumetric discontinuities, while CT may be considered when spatial characterization is needed. A laser-ultrasonic measurement may be relevant when contact is impractical. Whether combining methods adds value depends on the part and the inspection objective; it is not automatically more reliable or economical than choosing one qualified method.

Safety, training, and interpretation
X-ray radiography and CT use ionizing radiation, so inspections require appropriate radiation-safety controls and trained personnel. Their suitability depends in part on being able to arrange the source, part, and detector safely. LUT avoids a contact transducer, but laser use still requires suitable laser controls and method-specific training. Non-contact does not mean risk-free, universally accurate, or suitable for every surface.
Inspection results also depend on the procedure, equipment, part, and operator. Before relying on a method for acceptance decisions, establish that the inspection procedure is qualified for the target material and discontinuity and that the people performing and interpreting it are competent. CT images can contain artefacts, including beam hardening and scatter, and a small flaw may not be resolvable in a large object. Performance therefore needs to be assessed for the actual scanner, setup, specimen, and target flaw rather than inferred from a generic resolution or accuracy figure.
