Neither a large university nor a small college is automatically the better choice. Compare the specific schools on the things that shape a student’s everyday experience: courses and academic support, programs and activities, housing, setting, and cost. Enrollment can affect the scale of those options, but it cannot tell you on its own what life at a particular campus will feel like.

What “large” and “small” tell you—and what they don’t

There is no single enrollment cutoff that predicts a student’s campus experience. The National Center for Education Statistics reported that, in fall 2021, institutions with 20,000 or more students made up 5 percent of U.S. degree-granting institutions and enrolled 38 percent of students. Those figures describe the distribution of enrollment, not a universal definition of a large campus or a measure of educational quality. NCES, Digest of Education Statistics, published 2023.

A total enrollment figure also cannot show whether a college’s classes and gathering places are concentrated in one walkable area, spread across multiple campuses, or mixed with a city. Check undergraduate enrollment, campus locations, and the distances between places you would regularly go. The daily route between a residence hall, class, dining hall, and student activity may matter more than a headline total.

Available evidence does not establish that large universities or small colleges, as groups, produce better learning, belonging, graduation, or career outcomes. Treat size as context for questions about a specific school—not as a verdict.

Compare the parts of college life you will actually experience

Use the same questions for every school on your list. Institutional data can help with measurable comparisons; conversations and visits can reveal how those numbers translate into daily life. NCES College Navigator and College Scorecard provide comparison criteria that include enrollment, cost, location, majors, debt, and earnings by field. NCES College Navigator and U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard.

Decision area What to check Why it matters
Enrollment and layout Undergraduate enrollment, number and location of campuses, campus map, and travel time between likely classes The published total does not tell you how concentrated or dispersed your routine will be.
Academic access Typical class sizes in first-year courses and your likely major; access to instructors, teaching assistants, and advisers; registration process An overall student-to-faculty ratio or a school’s reputation does not explain how instruction and help work in your program.
Programs and course choice Majors, minors, electives, research, internships, and how often required courses are offered A broad catalog helps only if you can get into the opportunities relevant to your goals.
Social life and community Clubs, events, traditions, residence life, student organizations, and common gathering places Compare what is available and how students participate; size alone does not guarantee belonging or isolation.
Housing and setting First-year and later housing, dining, transit, town or city surroundings, and off-campus life Life outside class is shaped by the surrounding area and housing options as well as enrollment.
Cost and outcomes Net price, financial aid, debt, graduation data, and earnings by field Compare like with like and consider the student’s likely program; do not assume enrollment size explains differences.

How to assess classes, professors, and advising

Ask about the courses a student is likely to take, not just an institution-wide average. A large lecture in one introductory subject and a discussion-based seminar in another can coexist at the same college. Ask admissions staff or the department about typical class sizes in first-year courses and in the likely major, how students get help outside class, and how advising works.

  • How do students meet with professors outside class, and what role do teaching assistants play?
  • Does every student have an academic adviser? How often do students meet with that adviser, and how do they arrange appointments?
  • Which required classes fill quickly, and how often are they offered?
  • How are students assigned to required courses, and what happens if a course is full?
  • Can undergraduates join research, internships, or other hands-on work, and how early?

Ask current students what happens in practice, and, when possible, sit in on a relevant class or speak with a professor in your intended area. College Board visit guidance recommends these steps along with asking students about their classes and professors. College Board campus visit checklist.

Look beyond the class schedule: clubs, housing, and free time

Extracurricular activities can include student clubs and organizations, campus events, recreation, performances, cultural groups, volunteer work, and student government. The mix differs by college, and a list of organizations does not show whether they are active or easy for a new student to join. Ask which activities students actually attend and where they spend time between classes or on weekends.

Check what housing is available to first-year students and what options exist later. Ask about dining, residence life, transportation, and how students get to places they visit regularly. Walk through the surrounding community if you can; a campus’s relationship to a town or city can change what students do outside class.

BigFuture’s campus-tour guidance suggests asking about typical class size, first-year housing, extracurricular activities, academic advising, and places where students relax. College Board BigFuture campus tour questions.

Use campus visits to test your assumptions

A tour is most useful when it includes ordinary student spaces as well as admissions highlights. If possible, visit while classes are in session, sit in on a class, see a residence hall, talk with students, and explore the surrounding area. A summer visit can still provide a tour and admissions information, but may not show the usual campus atmosphere, according to the National Association for College Admission Counseling. NACAC campus visits.

  1. Prepare comparable questions. Write down what you want to learn about classes, advising, housing, activities, and daily logistics before visiting.
  2. Observe a regular setting. Attend an information session, but also look at a class, dining area, library, residence hall, or student gathering space when available.
  3. Talk with more than one person. Ask a student about classes and weekends, and speak with a professor or department representative if possible.
  4. Record specific impressions. Note what felt welcoming, inconvenient, busy, quiet, or easy to navigate rather than relying on a general feeling afterward.
  5. Compare like with like. Use the same questions and criteria at each school, and note the visit date and whether classes were in session.

  • Which school offers the courses and experiences the student most wants, and can the student realistically access them?
  • Where does the student expect to find community—through residence life, clubs, a major, athletics, city life, or another setting?
  • Does the likely daily routine, including travel across campus and time off campus, seem workable?
  • How do net price, aid, and likely debt compare, and what do outcomes data say for the relevant field?
  • Which trade-offs would the student willingly accept for the benefits that matter most?

Choose the specific college whose actual opportunities, support, setting, and cost best match the student’s priorities. A campus’s size can shape the range and scale of what is available, but the right fit depends on what that student can use and wants to experience.
