Most Laravel 12 applications should not need a major rewrite to move to Laravel 13, but the upgrade is not automatically a no-op. The first hard gate is PHP 8.3: production, CI, and developer environments all need to meet that minimum. After that, the main risks depend on which APIs, configuration defaults, and custom framework integrations your application actually uses.
Laravel 13 was released on March 17, 2026. Laravel characterizes the upgrade as relatively minor in effort, while its 12.x-to-13.x upgrade guide still lists changes with high, medium, low, and very-low impact. Use those labels to focus an application-specific audit rather than assuming either that everything breaks or that nothing does.
What can stop an upgrade before code changes begin?
PHP 8.3 or newer is required
Laravel 13 supports PHP 8.3 through 8.5, with PHP 8.3 as the minimum. If any developer machine, CI job, or deployment environment is below PHP 8.3, resolve that runtime mismatch before changing the framework dependency. Laravel’s deployment documentation is the relevant reference for preparing a production environment.
Composer dependencies need to be compatible
Laravel’s upgrade guide recommends these constraints where applicable:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

These are recommendations for the named packages, not a requirement to install every one. Check your existing package set and resolve Composer conflicts instead of assuming that changing the framework constraint alone completes the upgrade. If you use the Laravel installer, update it as part of the upgrade.
Which changes are most likely to affect an application?
High impact: request-forgery middleware references
The CSRF middleware has been renamed from VerifyCsrfToken to PreventRequestForgery, and it now checks request origin using Sec-Fetch-Site. The older names remain deprecated aliases, but direct references should be reviewed—especially test code and route exclusions that name the middleware explicitly. Search for VerifyCsrfToken and update references to the new name where appropriate.

Medium impact: cached PHP objects
Laravel 13’s cache serializable_classes option defaults to false. If the application caches serialized PHP objects, those objects may no longer be unserialized under the default setting. Identify the classes involved and either allow-list them explicitly or change cache payloads to simpler values such as arrays. Do not enable unrestricted object deserialization merely to preserve an old behavior.
Medium impact: empty MySQL or MariaDB upsert keys
Laravel now throws InvalidArgumentException when an upsert call supplies an empty uniqueBy value. MySQL and MariaDB use the table’s primary and unique indexes to determine whether a record already exists, but that does not make an empty argument valid in Laravel 13. Find calls that pass an empty value and provide the intended unique columns.

Low impact: generated prefixes and session cookie names
If the application relies on framework fallback values for cache or Redis prefixes, or for session cookie names, the generated defaults change from underscore to hyphen suffixes. Applications that set their own configuration values are usually unaffected. Laravel’s guide says explicit environment configuration can retain the old behavior, so compare the application’s actual configuration before changing it.
Low impact: custom framework contract implementations
Custom cache stores must implement the new touch contract method. Other custom implementations may also need new methods for the dispatcher, response factory, and MustVerifyEmail contracts. This is relevant when your application or a package implements those contracts directly; ordinary application code that only consumes the framework services may not need changes.

Could a configuration change log users out?
Yes. The Laravel 13 skeleton defaults session serialization to JSON. If you copy that setting into an existing application, all active sessions are invalidated. Keeping PHP serialization preserves session continuity; moving to JSON can be appropriate if you have checked whether sessions contain PHP objects and can accept re-authentication. Treat the skeleton as a reference, not a configuration file to copy wholesale.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Container resolution:
Container::callnow respects nullable class-parameter defaults when no binding exists. Code that relied on the previous implicit instance may behave differently. - Joined MySQL deletes: generated SQL now includes
ORDER BYandLIMIT. A clause that was previously ignored can cause aQueryExceptionon MySQL and MariaDB versions before 11.8.1. - Model lifecycle and relationships: model instantiation during model booting, inferred polymorphic pivot names, and serialized model collection relation restoration have changes to check.
- Queues and notifications: review the
JobAttemptedexception property and behavior for queued notifications whose models are missing. - Framework extension points and scheduling: manager extension callback binding and scheduling registration timing are among the documented changes.
- Testing and output: check test reset behavior for
Strfactories, Unicode escaping inJs::from, and Bootstrap pagination view names if those features are used. - PHP 8.5: review the guide’s note on polyfill helper conflicts if you run that supported PHP version.
These are not blanket breakages. Their importance depends on whether the application calls the affected behavior, implements the relevant framework integration, or relies on the old result.
What does not automatically break?
Laravel does not say that every Laravel 12 application must rewrite its code or replace every configuration file. Its release notes say the Laravel 13 release is relatively minor in upgrade effort, and that most applications may upgrade without much application-code change. Some documented changes are explicitly low or very low impact and apply only when an application depends on an old default or implements a framework contract.
That is a reason to make the audit focused, not a guarantee that a particular project is safe. Laravel’s guide says it attempts to document every possible breaking change, while acknowledging that some changes affect only part of the application base. The actual result depends on your dependencies, configuration, custom integrations, and test coverage.
How to check an application before rollout
- Confirm the runtime: verify PHP 8.3 or newer on developer machines, in CI, and in every deployment environment.
- Update dependencies: adjust applicable Composer constraints to Laravel 13-compatible versions, resolve transitive package conflicts, and update the installer if you use it.
- Audit the upgrade guide: read the 13.x guide and search the codebase for affected APIs and configuration. Prioritize
VerifyCsrfToken, emptyuniqueByvalues, cache object serialization, session serialization, joined deletes, and custom contract implementations. - Compare configuration selectively: review the Laravel 13 skeleton against your application, but do not copy the session serialization setting without deciding how it affects existing sessions.
- Test the application: run the project’s automated tests, then exercise critical user and operational flows in a staging environment.
- Plan maintenance: check Laravel’s 13.x release notes and support dates when deciding when to deploy and how long to maintain the release.
Laravel’s upgrade guide estimates 10 minutes for its 12.x-to-13.0 upgrade path; that is the guide’s general estimate, not a project-specific forecast. Laravel’s current support policy provides 18 months of bug-fix support and two years of security-fix support for releases. For Laravel 13, the stated bug-fix support endpoint is Q3 2027 and security-fix support ends March 17, 2028.
