Use laptop speakers when you’re alone in a quiet, private place and want to hear the room or avoid wearing headphones. Choose headphones when audio should stay private, people are nearby, or background noise makes it hard to listen comfortably. For calls, headphones contain incoming audio but do not keep your voice private.
How to choose: match the audio output to the setting
| Situation | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Alone in a quiet room | Laptop speakers | You can hear the room and avoid wearing headphones. |
| Shared room, café, or other public space | Headphones | They keep incoming audio closer to you instead of projecting it into the room. |
| Call in a place where others can hear you | Headphones, with a privacy check | They contain the other participants’ audio, but nearby people can still hear you speak. |
| Plane, train, or noisy transit | Well-fitted headphones; noise cancellation may help | They can make audio easier to hear without raising the volume as much. Keep announcements and surroundings in mind. |
| Long session when headphones feel uncomfortable | Speakers, if the room is private and quiet | They avoid prolonged headphone wear, but may disturb others. |
There is no universal sound-quality winner: laptop speakers and headphones vary by device and environment, and the available guidance does not provide controlled comparisons or model-by-model test results.
Privacy: consider both what you hear and what others hear
Speakers in shared spaces
Laptop speakers send sound into the room. In a shared workspace, café, hotel room, or transit area, that can expose meeting audio or disturb people nearby. Headphones are usually the more considerate and private choice when others are within earshot.

Headphones on calls
Headphones help keep incoming meeting audio private, but they do not muffle your own voice for people around you. Microsoft advises considering whether someone nearby could eavesdrop during a conference or video meeting, even when you wear headphones: Microsoft’s home-computing security guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
If a conversation is sensitive, move to a private space or use another suitable communication method; changing the audio output alone does not make the conversation private.
Work calls: choose for the room, not just the device
For a call in a shared room, headphones are generally more practical because they keep other participants’ voices from playing aloud. If you need a microphone, check whether your headphones include one or whether a compatible headset is appropriate. The output-device choice and microphone choice are separate: selecting headphones for listening does not by itself establish which microphone your computer is using.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
If you use speakers, consider whether other people can hear the call and whether the room is quiet enough to follow it without turning up the volume. Do not assume headphones conceal your spoken side of the conversation.
Travel and noise: avoid compensating with excessive volume
On a plane, train, or bus, ambient noise can make audio difficult to understand and tempt you to raise the volume. The World Health Organization says well-fitted, noise-cancelling headphones can reduce the need to turn up audio in noisy settings such as public transport or a cafeteria. This is a listening-comfort and volume-management benefit, not a promise that every headphone will block all travel noise: WHO safe-listening guidance.

Headphones also reduce how much audio you broadcast to people nearby, but they can make it harder to hear announcements or conversation. Keep enough awareness of your surroundings for the setting, and remove or pause them when you need to listen to people or instructions.
Listening safely: volume and time both count
WHO’s public safe-listening examples are 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week, or 90 dB for four hours per week. These examples illustrate how exposure time changes with sound level; they are not a guarantee that a particular headphone or laptop’s volume setting corresponds to a specific dB level. WHO also advises keeping device volume at no more than 60% of maximum, monitoring levels where possible, and taking breaks. The 60% figure is practical advice, not a calibrated sound-pressure measurement.

Apple documents headphone-exposure notifications and a Reduce Loud Audio option on supported devices. Its example threshold is exposure above 80 dB for 40 hours in seven days; Apple says this exposure limit covers media audio, not calls. Availability and settings vary by device, software, and region. See Apple’s headphone and loud-audio guidance.

Consumer noise-cancelling headphones are designed for listening, not automatically for controlling occupational noise exposure. OSHA says most consumer ANC headphones are not effective for controlling workplace noise exposure and advises against using them instead of laboratory-tested devices designed for hearing protection. In a March 6, 2023 interpretation, OSHA’s Andrew Levinson, MPH, summarized: “In summary, it is not recommended to use consumer noise-canceling headphones in place of laboratory-tested devices if they are not designed for hearing protection.” Read the OSHA interpretation.

Workplace exposure limits address a different question from safe listening through consumer devices. OSHA’s U.S. workplace noise overview describes a permissible exposure limit of 90 dBA for an eight-hour day; NIOSH recommends controlling worker exposure below an equivalent of 85 dBA for eight hours. These are occupational benchmarks, not personal headphone-volume targets. Consult OSHA’s workplace noise overview for that context.
Windows: switch output devices and troubleshoot sound
Windows controls and labels vary by version and hardware. In general, use the sound controls to select the desired output device, then check the connection and volume if audio does not play. Microsoft notes that laptop speakers may not work while headphones are plugged in. Follow Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guidance if switching outputs does not resolve the issue.
