External speakers are often a worthwhile choice for music and movies at a desk if you want more output or a dedicated stereo setup. Laptop speakers are more convenient when you need sound on the move. For calls, neither option is automatically better: playback speakers and the microphone are separate devices, so check which microphone your calling app is using.
How laptop and external speakers compare
| What matters | Laptop speakers | External speakers |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Portable use and quick listening without extra equipment. | A mostly fixed desk setup where you want to choose speakers for your space and listening preferences. |
| Sound | Quality and maximum comfortable volume vary by laptop model. RTINGS evaluates laptop-speaker frequency response and maximum volume in its testing; those results apply to the tested model, not all laptops. RTINGS laptop sound testing | A separate stereo pair may suit listeners seeking more output or a dedicated stereo arrangement, but performance depends on the specific speakers, placement, and room. Computer-speaker reviews assess factors such as music performance and frequency balance. TechRadar computer speaker guide |
| Convenience | Built in, so there are no extra cables, charging, pairing, or desk footprint. | May require space, power, setup, or charging; portable Bluetooth models trade off size, portability, loudness, sound quality, inputs, stereo pairing, and latency. RTINGS Bluetooth speaker guide |
| Calls | The laptop’s built-in microphone can be used alongside its speakers. | External speaker playback does not itself provide an external microphone. Select and test the recording input separately. Microsoft Surface accessory and sound guidance |
There is no universal winner based on the category alone: results depend on the laptop, speaker, connection, room, and app. For model-specific comparisons, look for measurements or reviews of the exact devices rather than assuming every external speaker outperforms every laptop.
Which works better for music?
For desk listening, external speakers are worth considering if you want a stereo arrangement, more output, or a sound profile that suits your preferences. A powered 2.0 desktop system is one common format; current examples include systems with several possible inputs, such as the Edifier M60, listed with 3.5 mm, Bluetooth, and USB-C. That is a product example, not a blanket recommendation. Tom’s Guide computer speaker guide
Keep placement and the room in mind: moving speakers or changing your listening position can affect what you hear. Compare reviews that discuss frequency balance and music performance, and check that the tested device is the model you are considering. RTINGS describes measuring laptop speaker frequency response at 65 dB and maximum volume; those are model-test methods, not a claim that every laptop reaches a particular quality level. #1 Best Overall
- External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
If music is occasional and portability matters more than a desk stereo setup, the built-in speakers may be the simpler choice. A Bluetooth speaker can also travel, but its sound, loudness, and supported inputs vary by model. RTINGS Bluetooth speaker guide
Which works better for movies and video?
At a desk, external speakers may be preferable if you want sound that fills the room more or a wider stereo presentation. Check the specific speakers’ inputs and your laptop’s available ports before choosing a system; a product’s connectivity does not mean every laptop supports it.

Bluetooth and lip-sync
Bluetooth audio can arrive late relative to video. The amount of latency and whether it is corrected depend on the speaker, playback device, and app; some apps and devices compensate differently. If lip-sync matters, consider a wired USB or analog connection when both devices support it, or check how your app handles Bluetooth audio. RTINGS Bluetooth speaker guide
What changes for calls?
Changing the playback speaker does not automatically change the call microphone. Windows and Surface let you select output devices, such as built-in or external speakers, separately from input devices, such as built-in or external microphones. Microsoft’s instructions are Surface/Windows-specific; on another operating system, use its own sound settings. Microsoft Surface accessory and sound guidance

- Use the app’s microphone test or make a short test call, listening for voice clarity and background noise.
RTINGS’ laptop microphone method evaluates recorded voice loudness, clarity, and background noise, which are useful things to check in a test. It does not establish that speaker playback improves or worsens every call. RTINGS laptop sound testing

- Match the ports: Confirm that the laptop and speaker both support the connection you plan to use, such as USB, 3.5 mm analog, or Bluetooth. Product inputs differ; for example, the Edifier M60 is listed as offering 3.5 mm, Bluetooth, and USB-C. Tom’s Guide computer speaker guide
- Check power and cables: Find out whether the speakers need a separate power connection and whether audio and power use the same cable.
- Consider portability: A portable Bluetooth speaker may require charging and can involve trade-offs in size, output, inputs, stereo pairing, and sound quality. RTINGS Bluetooth speaker guide
- Allow for separate volume controls: On Surface/Windows, accessory volume controls may work independently, so you may need to adjust the speaker and system or app volume. Microsoft Surface accessory and sound guidance
To connect speakers on a supported Surface/Windows setup, Microsoft describes connecting USB speakers to a full-size USB port or pairing Bluetooth speakers, then selecting playback and recording devices in Windows sound settings. The exact controls and paths can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft Surface accessory and sound guidance
