System sleep is different from turning off the display, so a dark screen does not necessarily mean your stream has stopped. To keep a local stream going, adjust the sleep settings for your operating system or use a temporary keep-awake tool; if the broadcast must continue while the laptop is off, move the streaming workflow to another computer or a cloud service.
1. Extend the Windows sleep timeout
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Adjust the plugged-in sleep timeout to cover your planned stream. The screen timeout and system sleep timeout are separate settings, so you can allow the display to turn off while the computer stays awake.
Menu names and available choices can vary with Windows version, device, and management policy. Avoid setting the computer to stay awake indefinitely unless that suits your power and cooling needs. A longer timeout does not protect a local stream from a restart, power loss, network failure, or other interruption.
2. Change what happens when you close the Windows laptop lid
If you need to stream with the lid shut, open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and review the available lid-close actions. This is separate from the idle sleep timeout; changing one does not necessarily change the other. Choices may depend on the laptop or its management policy.

Check your laptop maker’s guidance before streaming with the lid closed, because airflow and cooling behavior vary by model.
3. Prevent automatic sleep on a supported Mac
On supported Mac laptops, open System Settings > Battery > Options and look for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Turn it on if you want the display to go dark while the Mac remains awake on its power adapter. Apple notes that this option is not available on every Mac.
Apple Support cautions that delaying, preventing, or allowing disruption of sleep may increase power consumption. Check your Mac’s settings and documentation before relying on this option for a long stream.

4. Use Microsoft PowerToys Awake for a temporary Windows session
Microsoft PowerToys Awake can keep a Windows computer awake temporarily without changing its power settings. Enable Awake and choose an appropriate duration or mode for your streaming session. It works only while you are signed in and Awake is enabled; it does not work at the lock screen or prevent deliberate sleep or hibernation.
5. Let the display turn off without putting the computer to sleep
If you only want a dark screen, change the display timeout separately from the system sleep timeout. Both Windows and macOS provide controls for display and sleep behavior, but the exact settings depend on the OS and device. Test your stream setup before leaving it unattended: a black display alone does not tell you whether the computer is asleep.
6. Use the laptop’s correctly matched power adapter
For a long local streaming session, use a power adapter compatible with your exact laptop and its required wattage. This is a power-management precaution, not a sleep fix: plugging in does not guarantee that the computer will stay awake. Keep the device within its maker’s cooling and airflow guidance, and verify how its sleep settings behave when connected to power.

7. Move the stream off the laptop if it must continue while the laptop is off
A laptop that is off cannot encode and upload its usual local stream. If the broadcast must continue while your laptop is shut down, use a separate computer or a cloud-based streaming workflow instead. Before relying on any service, confirm current platform support, configuration requirements, content rights, cost, reliability information, and the vendor’s terms. A cloud workflow changes where the stream runs; it does not make a local laptop stream continue after the laptop is turned off.

FAQ
Does a black screen mean my laptop is asleep?
No. The display can turn off while the computer remains awake. Check the separate display and system sleep settings for your OS, and test your stream setup.

Can I keep a local stream running with my laptop lid closed?
It depends on the laptop’s lid-close settings and hardware. Windows provides a separate lid-close action in Power Options, but available choices vary. Follow the laptop maker’s cooling guidance before using it closed.
Will PowerToys Awake keep streaming after I lock Windows?
No. Microsoft says Awake does not work at the lock screen. It also does not block deliberate sleep or hibernation.
Can my stream continue if I turn off the laptop?
Not if the laptop is encoding and uploading the stream locally. To continue while it is off, use a separate computer or an appropriate cloud-based workflow.

Not necessarily. A compatible power adapter helps supply power during a long session, but sleep behavior is controlled separately by your device and OS settings.
Will these settings guarantee an uninterrupted stream?
No. Keep-awake settings address sleep behavior, but a restart, power interruption, connection failure, heat, or human action can still interrupt a local broadcast.
