A blank laptop screen does not necessarily mean the laptop is off. First check whether the computer shows signs of power; then use the relevant steps below to separate a startup or power problem from a display problem. For a Windows laptop that appears to be running, start with brightness, peripherals, and display shortcuts before testing an external monitor.
First, determine whether the laptop is powering on
Connect the laptop to its proper charger and look for a charging or power indicator. Listen for fan activity and note whether the keyboard lights up or the computer otherwise seems to start. These signs can help distinguish a laptop that is not powering on from one that is running with a blank display, but none identifies the failed component on its own.
Disconnect nonessential accessories, including docks, USB devices, and external displays, and try starting the laptop again. If there are no signs of power, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model rather than treating the screen as the likely cause. If indicator lights blink or the laptop beeps, record the pattern and check the model’s manual or support page for its meaning.
Charging guidance can vary by manufacturer. For example, MSI advises using the original AC adapter and charging for at least 30 minutes before continuing its model-specific troubleshooting. That interval is MSI-specific, not a universal requirement. MSI’s no-display troubleshooting

If the laptop appears to run, try basic display checks
Raise brightness and disconnect accessories
Use the laptop’s brightness keys to raise screen brightness; a very low setting can make an operating computer seem to have a blank screen. Disconnect external displays and peripherals, then restart if it is safe to do so. Dell’s display troubleshooting guide
Reset the Windows graphics driver
On Windows, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen may flicker or the computer may beep as Windows attempts to reset the graphics driver. This is a Windows shortcut and may not behave identically on every configuration. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps

Check Windows display mode
Press Windows+P, tap P again, and press Enter to cycle through Windows display modes. A mode selected for an external display can leave the built-in panel without the image you expect. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps
Restart only if the computer is unresponsive
A forced shutdown may help when the system is frozen, but it is not a general fix for a hardware fault. Reset procedures and button-hold times differ by model: Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance suggests holding the power button for 20 seconds, while HP describes approximately 15 seconds as part of a specific power-reset procedure. Use your laptop maker’s instructions for the exact model instead of assuming either duration applies to your device. Microsoft Support; HP’s power-reset guidance

Test the laptop with an external display
If you have access to a known-good compatible monitor, connect it using a supported cable and port. Turn on the monitor and select the correct input. Microsoft recommends trying another monitor or cable when troubleshooting; Dell explains that an external monitor bypasses the laptop’s LCD and can help determine whether the internal screen path is involved. Microsoft Support; Dell Support
- External monitor works, built-in screen stays blank: The result points toward the internal display path, but does not establish whether the panel, backlight, cable, connector, or another component is at fault.
- Neither display shows an image: The cause may be elsewhere in startup or graphics hardware. Use model-specific diagnostics rather than concluding that a particular component has failed.
An HDMI cable is useful only if both the laptop and monitor support HDMI video output. Check the ports and output capability first; borrowing a cable or monitor is enough for this test.

Know when to stop troubleshooting
Consult the support documentation for your exact model or an authorized repair provider if the screen remains blank at BIOS or firmware startup, the manufacturer’s basic steps do not resolve it, or the laptop shows diagnostic blink or beep codes. HP specifically directs users to authorized repair when its display does not work at BIOS level. MSI cautions that opening the bottom cover to reseat components can cause damage if you are unsure how to proceed. Avoid opening the laptop or reseating internal memory or display cables as a universal first step. HP’s display troubleshooting guidance; MSI’s no-display troubleshooting
