Yes—you can use a compatible Windows laptop as a second display without a capture card by receiving a wireless projection from another PC or using network-display software. For the built-in Windows route, the receiving laptop needs supported wireless display hardware and may need Windows’ Wireless Display optional feature. If you mean connecting one laptop’s HDMI port directly to another, first check both models’ specifications: an HDMI port alone does not establish that a laptop can accept video.

Before choosing, decide whether you need Duplicate (show the same image on both screens) or Extend (use the laptop as extra desktop space). Also check the operating-system and device requirements, network or port options, and whether you can install software.
Set up Windows Wireless Display
Use this route when the source PC and receiving laptop both support wireless display. Microsoft’s Windows instructions cover projecting from one PC to another; the feature and exact controls can vary with device and Windows version. Microsoft’s screen-mirroring and projection guide provides the current setup path.

- Prepare the receiving laptop. Open Settings → System → Projecting to this PC. If Windows prompts you, add the Wireless Display optional feature.
- Connect from the source PC. Open its wireless-display connection controls, find the receiving laptop, and select it.
- Choose a display mode. Select Duplicate to show the same content on both screens, or Extend to use the laptop as additional desktop space.
If the receiving laptop does not appear
- Check that both computers support Miracast or the relevant wireless display feature.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on and the receiving PC has the Wireless Display feature or app installed if required.
- Update relevant device drivers and firmware. Microsoft lists these checks in its wireless-display troubleshooting guidance.
Use network-display software when Miracast is not suitable
spacedesk documents a setup in which a primary Windows machine runs its driver/server software and a second device runs viewer software. The viewer can display an extended or duplicated desktop over TCP/IP. The spacedesk site and its manuals list Windows PCs and laptops among viewer devices; consult the system requirements and setup manual for current compatibility details before installing.

The manual lists a direct Ethernet cable as its best-performance connection option, Ethernet through a router as good, Wi-Fi direct to an access point as intermediate, and Wi-Fi through a router, switch, or hub as worst among those listed options. Those are the vendor’s relative descriptions, not independent tests or quantified latency measurements. It also lists Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB tethering, and USB-to-Ethernet as connection possibilities. Check your equipment and the manual for the applicable setup; no single connection type is required for every configuration.
When a Miracast adapter helps—and when it does not
A Miracast adapter is for an HDMI TV, monitor, or projector that lacks built-in Miracast. It plugs into that display’s HDMI port and uses USB for power; the source PC then connects through Windows wireless-display controls. See Microsoft’s adapter setup instructions.

That adapter does not turn a laptop into an HDMI-input display. To find out whether a particular laptop accepts HDMI video, check the manufacturer’s specifications for that exact model; the presence of an HDMI port by itself is not enough to establish input capability. Do not assume an HDMI cable alone will connect one laptop’s screen to another.
Check Windows version and support status
Compatibility depends on the computers’ hardware, software, and drivers. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If either PC still runs Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and support information rather than assuming it receives ordinary free updates. The Windows projection and troubleshooting pages linked above also help confirm which controls apply to your setup.
