To authenticate with the LambdaTest Automated Screenshot API, use your account username and access key as HTTP Basic credentials. Store them as LT_USERNAME and LT_ACCESS_KEY, then send a JSON POST request to https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/. A successful start request returns a test_id for identifying the screenshot test.
Get your LambdaTest username and access key
- Sign in to the LambdaTest automation dashboard.
- Find the username and access key in the key control near the help button.
- Use those account credentials for API authentication. The setup guide also refers to the HubURL as an authentication credential; the start-test request described here is sent to the screenshot endpoint shown below. See the Automated Screenshot API setup guide.
Do not put a real access key in a public example or commit it to source control. Use environment variables or an appropriate secret store for scripts that run outside your local machine.
Set the credentials as environment variables
The guide documents LT_USERNAME and LT_ACCESS_KEY for command-line configuration.

Send an authenticated screenshot request
The start-test operation expects a JSON POST to the screenshot endpoint. Its Authorization scheme is HTTP Basic: the header value is Basic followed by the base64 encoding of username:password. In this account-credential context, use the access key as the password. The formal request details and response examples are in the Start Screenshot Test API reference.

Do not send the raw username and access key as the Basic header value: it must be base64-encoded.
Request body and response
The documented JSON body can specify the URL to capture, browser and operating-system configurations, resolutions, and other test options. The example above illustrates the request shape; consult the API reference for the fields and values you need. On a successful start, the API returns a test_id, which identifies the screenshot test for subsequent retrieval. The reference includes examples of 200, 400, 401, and 403 responses.

Troubleshoot authentication and request errors
- 401 or 403: The reference shows these response codes but does not assign a specific cause to each. Check that you used the intended account username and access key, formed the Basic header from
username:access_key, and sent the request to the documented endpoint. - Request rejected as malformed: Confirm that the method is
POST, the body is valid JSON, and the request includesContent-Type: application/json. The reference includes a 400 response example. - No
test_idto use next: Check whether the start operation succeeded before using a test identifier. A successful start response returnstest_id. - Environment variables appear empty: Check their spelling and whether they were set in the shell that runs cURL. Re-enter them in the active session if necessary.
