What is Krita used for?
Krita is built for digital painting and illustration. Its feature set includes selection and transformation tools, full color management using LCMS and OpenColorIO, loading and saving PSD files, HDR and scene-referred image workflows, and Python scripting. The project also provides training resources. These features make Krita a capable painting application; they do not establish it as a complete replacement for every kind of image-editing or design software. Is Krita really free, and can you use it commercially?
Yes. The official website download is free, and Krita is licensed under GNU GPL version 3. The project permits using the program for any purpose, including commercial work, and says the artwork made with it belongs to the artist. In the project’s words, “Your art is your sole property.” Read the Krita license and usage terms for the full explanation.
You do not need to register or stay connected to the internet to use Krita. The project notes that optional startup news and store update checks use an internet connection. If you distribute a modified build, the GPL requires you to make changes to that build available under the license terms.

Which version should you download?
Krita’s download page currently lists version 5.3.4, released September 15, 2026. Version information and requirements can change, so check the official download page before installing.

What computer do you need for Krita?
The current download page lists Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.15, or Linux. Its listed minimum memory is 4 GB RAM, with 16 GB recommended; graphics support is OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11. Treat these as the requirements shown for the current download, not permanent guarantees, because they may change with later releases.
The page offers downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and links to an Android option. It explicitly says iPads and iPhones are not supported. Android details can depend on the release: the 5.3.4 release notes mention rendering animations and exporting timelapses on Android, while also stating that Krita 6.0.4 is not yet functional on Android. Consult the download page and the 5.3.4 release notes for the current platform details.

What graphics tablet works with Krita?
Krita’s guidance is to use a graphics tablet compatible with your operating system; it does not name a preferred brand or model. Check the tablet maker’s specifications for OS compatibility and features you care about, such as a built-in screen, drawing area size, pressure sensitivity, and connection type. The Krita Manual’s tablet guidance covers compatibility.
A tablet is optional hardware rather than a brand-specific Krita requirement. You can choose a compatible graphics tablet based on your setup and budget without treating any model as officially recommended by Krita.

Does Krita need an internet connection?
No internet connection or registration is required for Krita to function. Optional startup news and store update checks are the connectivity-related features described by the project on its license and usage page.
