The confirmed difference is the remake’s scope and intent: it is being rebuilt from the ground up with modern technology, features, and visuals, while its producer says the team aims to preserve the story and characters. Specific changes to combat, dialogue, progression, quests, or story content have not been detailed in the sources reviewed. The remake was still in development as of March 6, 2026.

What the remake has confirmed

When Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the project on September 9, 2021, it described the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake as a ground-up rebuild for a modern audience. Aspyr lead producer Ryan Treadwell said the team was rebuilding the game with modern technology, features, and visuals while maintaining the integrity of its story and characters. Sony also characterized the work as encompassing almost every aspect of the original.

Those statements establish an ambitious modernization goal, not a feature-by-feature account of what will change. “Maintaining the integrity” is the producer’s stated intent; it is not a guarantee that every scene, line, quest, or character detail will remain identical. Sony’s 2021 announcement does not explain how individual systems will work.

What the original game offers as a baseline

The original is a single-player role-playing game developed by BioWare and released on November 19, 2003, according to its Steam listing. Steam describes a party-based adventure featuring Force powers, lightsaber construction, and travel between worlds aboard the Ebon Hawk.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - Xbox (Renewed)
  • This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

StarWars.com’s game page places the story four thousand years before the Galactic Empire, during a conflict between Jedi and Sith, and highlights customizable party characters, Force powers, iconic locations, and starship travel. The two listings give different counts for the worlds visited, so a single count is not necessary to describe the original’s scope.

How the remake compares so far

Area What is known What has not been established
Technology and visuals The 2021 announcement names modern technology and visuals as remake goals. Specific visual changes, technical features, or presentation details.
Features and gameplay systems The producer referred broadly to modern features, and Sony said the remake covers almost every aspect of the original. Whether combat, dialogue, skill checks, progression, party management, quests, or encounters will change, and how.
Story and characters The producer said the team intends to maintain the integrity of the story and characters. Whether content will be added, removed, rewritten, or otherwise altered.
Platforms The 2021 announcement said the game was coming to PS5 and PC and called it a PS5 console exclusive at launch. Whether those plans have changed since the announcement.

“Modern features” should not be read as confirmation of a particular combat style, dialogue system, or quality-of-life addition. The announcement supplies no implementation details for those systems, so claims that a specific mechanic has changed remain unverified by the sources cited here.
