To set KNX thermostat presets in Home Assistant, configure the KNX climate entity with the operation-mode group address or addresses your thermostat uses, then select a preset the device supports. Home Assistant can detect available presets from the thermostat setup; the KNX integration’s operation_modes option lets you override that list when needed. Presets such as comfort and economy are different from HVAC modes such as heat and off.
What KNX preset modes mean in Home Assistant
A KNX climate entity can represent a thermostat or room controller. Its preset is an operation mode, typically one of auto, comfort, standby, economy, or building_protection. The device and its KNX configuration determine which of these are actually available; not every thermostat supports the full list. Home Assistant’s climate integration likewise treats preset availability as device-dependent. KNX integration documentation · Climate integration documentation
HVAC modes describe the controller state instead: for example, heat, cool, auto, or off. In KNX configuration, operation_modes is for thermostat presets; controller_modes is for HVAC modes. Changing the controller-mode list will not add comfort or economy presets.

The KNX integration supports two patterns for operation-mode control. Use the pattern represented by the group objects in your ETS project and thermostat documentation; neither is a universal choice. A local KNX/IP interface or router is required for Home Assistant to connect to the KNX bus. KNX integration documentation
#1 Best Overall
- Serves as a targeted replacement or upgrade part for indoor climate control systems, integrating temperature regulation and humidity management in one device.
- Comes with built-in KNX communication capability, enabling seamless connection with compatible smart home or building control systems.
- Features an integrated humidity sensor that monitors indoor moisture levels, supporting coordinated adjustment of temperature and humidity conditions.
- Equipped with a convenient control switch for straightforward operation, allowing users to adjust settings without complex programming steps.
- Adopts a compact and wall-mounted design that fits well with various indoor decor styles, requiring simple installation without specialized tools for basic setup.
Combined operation-mode datapoint
If the thermostat exposes a combined operation-mode datapoint, configure its write address with operation_mode_address and, when available, its feedback address with operation_mode_state_address. The documented combined datapoint is DPT 20.102. For example, the integration’s YAML structure can include:
knx:
climate:
- name: "Kitchen"
temperature_address: "5/1/1"
setpoint_shift_address: "5/1/2"
setpoint_shift_state_address: "5/1/3"
target_temperature_state_address: "5/1/4"
operation_mode_address: "5/1/5"
operation_mode_state_address: "5/1/6"
The group addresses above illustrate configuration syntax only. Replace them with the addresses from your own KNX project.

- As a compatible replacement for the Siemens RDG100KN room thermostat, this device provides stable KNX bus communication for your building’s HVAC automation system.
- Equipped with a built-in humidity sensor and physical control switches, you can directly monitor indoor humidity and adjust heating and cooling settings.
- This wall-mounted thermostat is compatible with heating and cooling units. Replace faulty or outdated thermostats to restore normal control of your indoor climate.
- Ideal for HVAC technicians, property maintenance teams, and smart home retrofits; verify your KNX system parameters before installation to ensure optimal performance.
- This thermostat controls room temperature and humidity; it is recommended that wiring and parameter configuration be performed by a professional technician familiar with KNX.
Separate binary mode addresses
If the thermostat represents operation modes with individual binary group objects, the integration documents these address options:
operation_mode_frost_protection_addressoperation_mode_night_addressfor night or economyoperation_mode_comfort_addressoperation_mode_standby_address
These binary mode addresses use DPT 1. An operation-mode state address is optional. Confirm each object’s meaning and datapoint in ETS and the thermostat’s application documentation rather than assuming that labels or addresses match another installation.

- ✅ NO SUBSCRIPTION: Scheduling, remote control, voice control, geofencing, and the monthly runtime email are included. The Mysa app stays free.
- ⚡ 120V OR 240V LINE VOLTAGE: For electric baseboard, fan-forced, wall, and convector heaters, plus radiant ceiling heat. Up to 1,900W at 120V or 3,800W at 240V. A single-pole thermostat that replaces many single-pole and double-pole thermostats. Local codes vary.
- 🔌 CHECK THE WIRES FIRST: Needs 4 wires, including a neutral or a second live wire. It will not work on a two-wire switch loop, or on 24V furnaces and central heat pumps. Use Mysa's compatibility checker before you order.
- 🛠️ GUIDED DIY INSTALL: The app walks through each wire. Turn power off at the breaker. Hire an electrician where code requires it, or if you are not comfortable with high-voltage wiring.
Set the supported preset list
KNX preset support can be detected from the thermostat configuration. If Home Assistant’s detected list does not match the device, set the KNX climate entity’s operation_modes option to the real supported preset values. For example, a device that supports comfort and economy but not building protection should not be configured as though it supports every documented mode. Check the KNX integration documentation for the YAML or panel configuration details. KNX integration documentation

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect presets
- Check device capability. Confirm that the thermostat or room controller supports the desired operation mode, using its application documentation or ETS group-object configuration.
- Check the group objects. Verify that the configured write and state addresses refer to the intended KNX objects. Use the combined DPT 20.102 datapoint or the separate DPT 1 addresses according to the device’s implementation.
- Align the preset list. If the detected list differs from the thermostat’s supported modes, set
operation_modesto the device’s actual presets. - Check the action and value. Use
climate.set_preset_modeand a value present in that entity’s supported presets. - Keep mode types separate. Diagnose operation presets and HVAC controller modes independently; they use different controls and configuration options.
KNX HVAC modes are a separate protocol concept
The KNX specification describes HVAC controller modes including Auto, Heat, Cool, Off, Fan only, and Dehumidification. Home Assistant’s KNX integration has its own documented controller-mode strings, including off, auto, heat, cool, fan_only, and dehumidification; controller_modes can override that supported list. Protocol enumeration does not make those values thermostat presets. KNX integration documentation · KNX System Specifications
