There is no evidence-based universal winner between KnownHost and DreamHost. DreamHost’s Web Hosting Launch plan has the lower advertised first-year price, but its renewal rate is much higher. KnownHost’s shared plans make cPanel and explicit CPU and memory limits central to the offer; DreamHost offers its own control panel and plans with higher listed website counts. The right choice depends on the full cost over your term, the resources and WordPress management you need, and which control panel you prefer.

Compare the price you will actually pay
DreamHost’s advertised Launch price is lower at the start, but it applies only to the first year. Its pricing page lists a $2.89 monthly rate for that year and a $10.99 monthly renewal rate afterward. DreamHost says the full term plus taxes is charged at checkout, so the monthly figure is not necessarily the amount charged each month.
KnownHost lists shared hosting from $3.47 per month when billed annually. Its detailed comparison shows Basic from $3.47, Standard from $6.48, Professional from $9.98, and Premium from $19.98 per month. The page labels these “as low as” prices; verify the billing term and total at checkout rather than assuming the displayed monthly rate is the complete cost.
#1 Best Overall
The offers have different billing conditions, so the headline monthly figures alone do not establish which provider costs less over the same period. Compare the initial amount charged and the renewal amount for the term you intend to buy. DreamHost says its plan cards display the renewal rate alongside promotional pricing on its hosting page.
DreamHost Web Hosting plan prices
| Plan | First-year advertised rate | Listed renewal rate | Websites | Monthly visit estimate | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | $2.89 per month for the first year | $10.99 per month after one year | 25 | 40,000 | 25 GB NVMe |
| Growth | $3.99 per month for the first year | $12.99 per month | 50 | 200,000 | 50 GB |
| Scale | $9.99 per month for the first year | $25.99 per month | 100 | 400,000 | 100 GB |
These prices and plan figures are DreamHost’s current published listings; its page says the full term plus taxes is due at checkout. DreamHost describes visit counts as estimates of traffic a tier can comfortably handle, not hard caps. See DreamHost’s pricing page for the plan details.
Entry-level plans are not feature-for-feature equivalents
KnownHost Basic is a resource-defined shared plan: it lists one website, one CPU core, a 1 GB memory limit, 10 GB storage, five email accounts, two databases, cPanel, LiteSpeed, and free SSL. The other KnownHost shared tiers raise the listed resource limits and website allowance.

Its 40,000 monthly visits are an estimate, not a strict cap. DreamHost’s listed email offer is a trial, so do not treat it as the same kind of ongoing allowance as a plan feature without checking the terms.
KnownHost shared tiers
| Plan | Published starting price | Websites | CPU cores | Memory limit | Cloud storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3.47 per month | 1 | 1 | 1 GB | 10 GB |
| Standard | $6.48 per month | 5 | 2 | 2 GB | 25 GB |
| Professional | $9.98 per month | Unlimited | 4 | 4 GB | Unlimited |
| Premium | $19.98 per month | Unlimited | 6 | 6 GB | Unlimited |
KnownHost displays these as “as low as” rates. The detailed comparison lists unlimited premium bandwidth, free SSL, AMD EPYC CPUs, an NVMe backend, cPanel, and LiteSpeed across all four tiers; verify billing terms and the checkout total. Source: KnownHost’s plan comparison.
Choose by control panel and day-to-day administration
If you specifically want cPanel, KnownHost’s shared-plan comparison lists it as included. DreamHost uses its own panel and does not offer cPanel or WHM, so a cPanel workflow or a migration that depends on cPanel may make KnownHost the more suitable fit.
Rank #3
KnownHost’s general hosting overview says control panels are not included by default for managed services and that panel licenses such as cPanel, Plesk, or DirectAdmin are billed separately. That statement concerns applicable managed services; it does not negate the shared comparison’s listing of cPanel with its shared plans. Check the exact service category and plan before assuming a panel license is included. See KnownHost’s hosting overview and shared-plan comparison.
For WordPress, compare managed plans with managed plans
Comparing KnownHost Basic directly with DreamPress can mislead: ordinary shared hosting and managed WordPress hosting differ in what the provider handles. DreamHost distinguishes WordPress hosting that the customer manages from DreamPress, which it says handles WordPress updates and includes on-demand backups and staging.
KnownHost publishes three Managed Hosting for WordPress tiers:
Rank #4
| KnownHost tier | CPU cores | Memory | NVMe storage | Published monthly-visit figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 2 | 4 GB | 50 GB | Up to 100,000 |
| Business | 4 | 4 GB | 100 GB | Up to 200,000 |
| Corporate | 6 | 6 GB | 150 GB | Up to 500,000 |
KnownHost describes WP Toolkit features including one-click staging and cloning, and says 24/7 support is available for its WordPress service. It lists a 30-day money-back guarantee for new clients on WordPress packages. Prices for these tiers are not stated on the cited WordPress page, so compare current quotes directly with DreamPress rather than inferring a price match. DreamHost’s pricing page separates managed DreamPress from customer-managed WordPress hosting. Compare included maintenance, backups, staging, support, and visit guidance for the exact DreamPress plan you are considering. The published DreamPress performance figures are vendor-reported results, not a KnownHost comparison.
VPS is a separate decision: who manages the server?
Do not treat a VPS plan as a like-for-like upgrade from shared hosting without deciding how much server administration you want. DreamHost says its self-managed VPS includes root access and leaves security and updates to the customer. Its Managed VPS does not include root access. Root access gives the customer more direct control but also means taking responsibility for more of the server’s upkeep. For KnownHost, confirm the management level and control-panel licensing for the particular VPS service before comparing it with DreamHost’s options.

Speed, uptime, and support: what the published evidence shows
There is no equivalent independent test here that compares KnownHost and DreamHost under the same workload, site configuration, and test conditions. KnownHost’s hardware and performance descriptions and DreamHost’s uptime language are provider claims, not proof that one host will deliver better results for your site.
DreamHost advertises a 100% uptime guarantee on its hosting page. A guarantee is a policy, not evidence of zero downtime; review the applicable terms and remedies before relying on it. The available information does not establish the full exclusions or credit process.
DreamHost reports that its own benchmark tests, conducted August 18–31, 2025, found DreamPress had “up to 6x faster site response times,” with pages fully loaded in under a second and performance staying steady under load. DreamHost’s article, updated August 25, 2026, says outcomes vary by region and site setup. This is DreamHost’s vendor-reported benchmark across WordPress platforms, not a direct test against KnownHost. The same article reports a 73% first-contact resolution rate for DreamPress support as of August 2026; that figure applies to DreamPress support, not all DreamHost services or a comparison with KnownHost. See DreamHost’s managed-versus-shared hosting article.
DreamHost says it offers 24/7 support through chat and email and free WordPress migration tooling on its hosting page. KnownHost says 24/7 support is available for its WordPress packages. These statements describe the published offerings; they do not establish comparative response quality.
Which host should you choose?
- Choose KnownHost shared hosting if you want cPanel and prefer published CPU and memory limits when selecting a shared plan. Match the tier to your site count and resource needs, then verify the billed term and total.
- Consider DreamHost Launch if the lower first-year price and its published multi-site allowance, backups, storage, and included services fit your needs—and you have accounted for the listed renewal rate.
- For a WordPress site, compare KnownHost’s managed WordPress tiers with DreamPress. Decide which provider’s maintenance, staging, backup, and support offer best fits your workload; do not use shared-plan prices or claims as substitutes for managed-plan terms.
- For VPS hosting, decide first whether you want root access and server administration. DreamHost’s self-managed and managed VPS options differ on root access and responsibility for security and updates.
- If speed or uptime is your deciding factor, seek comparable evidence for your own setup. The vendor claims available here do not identify an overall performance winner.
Before purchasing or migrating, compare the full initial charge and renewal for the same term, confirm included control-panel licensing and email terms, and check that the plan’s resource and management limits suit the site.
