For a first playthrough, play the main Kingdom Hearts entries in release order—not strict in-universe chronological order. That sequence introduces the story’s reveals in a more understandable progression. Chronology is an alternative for returning players or completionists, not the clearest starting route.
What order should I play Kingdom Hearts in?
Use this first-play sequence. It follows the series’ release-era progression and collection structure, rather than claiming that every event happens in this order inside the story.

- 358/2 Days — watch the HD cutscene compilation
- Birth by Sleep Final Mix
- Re:coded — watch the HD cutscene compilation

- Kingdom Hearts III
- Re Mind — the additional chapter associated with Kingdom Hearts III’s climax
This is a practical recommendation for newcomers, not an official Square Enix play-order mandate. The publisher’s Kingdom Hearts timeline and collection pages help identify the material, but a bundle’s contents do not amount to a definitive, spoiler-safe first-play guide.
Do I play Kingdom Hearts in chronological order?
Not if this is your first time through. In-universe chronology brings prequel material forward, changing what you learn and when. A chronological route can suit a replay or a completionist focused on arranging events by story time, but the exact placement of every mobile-story beat relative to the console entries is not settled by the official pages cited here. Treat chronology as a distinct, spoiler-sensitive approach rather than a better version of the first-play order above.

- This product is also included in other bundle sets. Please ensure you do not purchase the same content more than once.
- Platform-exclusive Keyblade "Long Night" included with purchase!
- GAME-KEY CARD. 128 GB – Full game download via internet required.
Which games are playable, and which are movies?
The collection names can make each item look like a conventional game, but some entries are presented as video rather than full playable remakes. In HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations. In HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, χ Back Cover is a movie.
That distinction matters if you want to play rather than watch. Include those compilations and the movie in the story sequence if you want their narrative material, but do not expect them to provide the original games’ full playable experience in these collections.

Square Enix describes HD 2.8 as three adventures leading up to Kingdom Hearts III. The 2026 announcement for Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] lists it for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store on Windows, with availability varying by region. The announcement gives an October 8, 2026 release date; check the relevant local store for current availability. It lists physical and digital options for the full collection, while component bundles in that offering are digital-only.
For a narrower starting point, Square Enix’s US collection page lists HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX on Steam as KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE and describes component bundles and storefront options. Check your region, platform, edition and physical or digital format before choosing a collection.

Do I need to play every Kingdom Hearts game?
No. You can follow the main path through the ordered console entries without treating every related release as a prerequisite. But if your goal is to understand the wider story, the cutscene compilations and χ Back Cover movie carry narrative material despite not being full games in these collections. The series also has mobile-story entries, which require a separate access check.
What about Kingdom Hearts χ, Union χ and Dark Road?
These are additional story material, not a simple extra step that can be inserted confidently into the console sequence from the available official chronology information. Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts Archives records that Union χ service ended and moved to an offline version in 2021, and Dark Road service ended and moved offline in 2022. That archive does not establish current device compatibility or whether every story item is accessible in every region. Check current official app or store support before relying on either entry.
