Short answer: It is not established that Kineon’s MOVE+ device relieves joint pain. Research on photobiomodulation (PBM), the broader treatment category that includes red and near-infrared light, suggests it may ease pain at rest for some people with knee osteoarthritis, but the evidence is very uncertain. That research does not show that MOVE+ itself works.
What is Kineon MOVE+?
Kineon markets MOVE+ as a device for joint pain. The company describes it as a combination of 660 nm red-light LEDs and 808 nm near-infrared lasers. Those are manufacturer-provided specifications, not independent proof of a pain-relieving effect. Kineon’s MOVE+ product page
MOVE+ is a particular consumer product; PBM is a broader category of light-based treatments. Results from studies of PBM cannot automatically be applied to this device, especially when treatment parameters, placement, and the people studied differ.
What does the evidence say about red and near-infrared light for knee osteoarthritis?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Physical Therapy examined 10 placebo-controlled studies involving 542 people with knee osteoarthritis. The studies searched by the review were published through October 2023. The review found a possible benefit for pain at rest, but rated the certainty of that evidence very low. - For pain at rest, six studies produced a pooled estimate of -0.7 (95% confidence interval -1.1 to -0.2). The authors characterized the effect as moderate, but the certainty of the evidence was very low.
- Three studies measuring the Timed “Up & Go” Test found no significant effect.
The studies had unclear-to-high risk of bias and used varying treatment parameters. Some improvements were not clinically meaningful or were not significant compared with placebo. A pooled estimate therefore does not promise a noticeable benefit for an individual.
Does that mean MOVE+ works?
No. The review evaluated PBM studies, not MOVE+ as a specific product. The evidence reviewed here does not establish a product-specific clinical benefit for MOVE+. Kineon’s pages discuss research and make claims about PBM; those are the company’s account of the literature, not independent confirmation that this device relieves pain.

The review authors said the very low certainty did not support using PBM as an isolated treatment, while noting it may complement other widely recommended therapies. In practical terms, this evidence is not a reason to replace established osteoarthritis care with a light device. If you are considering PBM as an add-on, discuss it with a qualified clinician.
Safety and FDA context
The FDA’s January 2023 PBM-device document is draft guidance for certain premarket submissions. The FDA labels it non-binding and “Not for implementation.” It describes recommendations for testing, clinical studies, and labeling; it does not establish that MOVE+ is FDA-cleared or approved. A manufacturer’s “FDA registered” wording should not be read as proof of FDA clearance.

FDA consumer information on photobiomodulation, written in a body-contouring context rather than specifically for MOVE+, warns that light-based procedures can injure the eyes and lists circumstances in which PBM is not recommended. These include photosensitivity disorders; pregnancy or planning pregnancy; active implants such as pacemakers; cancer at the treatment site; photosensitizing medication; and an active infection, wound, or lesion in the treatment area. Follow the product instructions and consult a qualified clinician about personal risks.

- Was the evidence about the specific device, or about PBM generally?
- Did it study your condition, such as knee osteoarthritis, or a different population or type of pain?
- Was the treatment compared with a placebo, and how certain were the findings?
- Were the wavelength, dose, placement, and treatment schedule similar to the product’s instructions?
- Do your health conditions or medications raise safety concerns that warrant clinician advice?
- Are the current price, return terms, warranty, and availability acceptable? Verify these directly, because the clinical evidence does not establish comparative cost effectiveness.
