If a Kindle book won’t open, first check whether it is missing from your library, stuck downloading, or already downloaded but failing when tapped. Check your connection and sync, then verify library visibility and delivery. Only move to account or device resets after these simpler checks.
First, identify what is failing
The fix depends on where the problem occurs. Note whether you are using a Kindle e-reader, the Kindle app on a phone or tablet, or the Kindle app on Windows. Then check which of these describes the book:
- It is missing from the library.
- It appears in the library but will not download.
- It is downloaded, but fails when you tap it.
Amazon’s troubleshooting steps directly address missing or undelivered content, but they do not identify the cause of every error that appears when a downloaded book is opened. If the book is present and downloaded but still will not open, record the exact error and your device or app before contacting Amazon support.

Amazon says, “A working internet connection is required to purchase, download, or sync books to your library.” Confirm that Wi-Fi is connected and Airplane mode is off. Then sync the app or e-reader so it can check for account changes and new content. See Amazon’s Kindle content troubleshooting steps and connection guidance.

- Kindle app on a phone or tablet: Open More, then choose Sync or Sync Now. The exact label may vary by app version.
- Kindle e-reader: Choose Sync or Sync and Check for Items. Menu wording and placement can vary by model.
Look for the book in the library and deliver it
If the title still does not appear, check that the library is showing all content and that a filter is not hiding it. In the Kindle app, open Library, choose All, clear any active filters, refresh the view, and search for the title. Amazon notes that filters can make content appear to be missing. Its library visibility guidance covers this check.
If the book is listed in Manage Your Content and Devices, use its delivery controls to send it to the Kindle app or e-reader you want to read on. Then sync that device again. Use Manage Your Content and Devices to find the title and its delivery options.

If it is absent, check the digital order
Check the order only if the book is missing from your account’s content list. In Amazon, open Your Orders and look under Digital Orders for the transaction. Confirm that the purchase is complete. If Amazon shows an incomplete order, it may offer Retry Payment Method or Change Payment Method. After resolving the order, check Manage Your Content and Devices again and deliver the book if it appears. Amazon’s content troubleshooting page describes these account checks; a payment issue should not be assumed when a book is already in your library.

Restart an e-reader if the problem persists
If an e-reader has persistent intermittent problems, such as a frozen screen or slow performance, Amazon recommends restarting it. Press and hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank. Keep holding for 40 seconds, then release it and allow the Kindle to reboot. Button behavior can vary by model; if these steps do not match your device, follow the relevant instructions on Amazon’s Kindle restart page.

Windows users: check the app’s support status
Amazon says its Legacy Kindle app, previously called Kindle for PC, has been unsupported since June 30, 2026. If you still use that app, consult Amazon’s current Windows Kindle installation and update instructions rather than assuming the older app remains supported.

These actions can interrupt access to content, so do not use them as first-line fixes.

Deregistering
Deregistering temporarily removes the Kindle’s access to your account, purchased content, and Amazon services until you register it again. Consider it only after connection, sync, library, delivery, and order checks have not resolved the issue. See Amazon’s deregistration guidance.
Factory reset
A factory reset removes personal data and downloaded content, including content that has not synced, and deregisters the Kindle. Before considering it, confirm that important content and reading data are synced, and follow Amazon’s model-specific directions. Amazon describes the consequences in its Kindle factory-reset instructions.

If the book remains unavailable after the relevant checks, contact Amazon support with your device or app, whether the title appears in your account, and the exact error shown.
