To keep social media off a child’s phone, first decide whether you want a device with no browser or app store, or a smartphone where a parent blocks selected apps. The first approach limits internet access more firmly; the second offers more flexibility but depends on plan features and parental settings. Compare web and app access, contact controls, location tools, schedules, remote pause, privacy, and the full recurring cost before choosing.
Choose how much internet access the phone should allow
“No social media” can describe two different setups. A phone may lack a browser, internet access, and an app store, or it may permit internet and apps while a parent blocks social platforms. A restriction that depends on a plan or settings is not the same as a built-in absence of access.
- More restricted: Check whether the device has a browser, can reach the internet, or lets the child install apps. Ask what communication and other functions remain available.
- More flexible: Confirm which plan or settings allow web access or extra apps, and whether parents can approve individual apps and block specific sites.
For any option, find out whether the child can change settings, install apps, or remove the controls. A parent-managed feature is only useful if the parent can keep managing it.
How current phone options differ
The examples below describe manufacturers’ stated features, not independent tests or proof that a phone makes a child safer. Availability and terms can change; confirm them with the manufacturer before buying.

Use a feature checklist when comparing phones
Browser, internet, and app installation
- Is internet access unavailable, or can a parent enable it under a particular plan or schedule?
- Is there no app store, a curated app library, or Google Play with parent approvals?
- Which plan unlocks additional apps or web access? Can parents block apps and websites again?
Contacts and communication
Check whether parents can approve contacts, limit who can call or text, and control who may be added. Ask what calling, messaging, and video functions are included, and whether a school or bedtime restriction still allows the child to reach a caregiver.
Location and saved places
Find out whether the parent view offers live location or arrival and departure alerts for saved places, and how the child can contact caregivers. A feature listing does not establish location accuracy; do not assume it will work in every setting.

Schedules, pause, and monitoring
Check whether parents can set school or bedtime schedules and pause the phone remotely. Before relying on those controls, establish what communication remains available during a pause. For monitoring features, ask what the service says it scans or logs, who can see that information, and what the child will be told. Monitoring alerts are not the same as preventing an event.

- Consider a plan-based phone if you want to add access gradually. Check what can be enabled, how to block it again, and which parent controls are included at each plan level.
- Agree on expectations about location sharing, monitoring, and schedules. Explain what parents can see and when the phone may be paused.
