Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide urgent central assistance to Karnataka, citing the state’s request for ₹3,705.30 crore in drought relief. The amount was sought under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) framework, against estimated losses of ₹18,748.23 crore, according to figures attributed to Kharge in reports published October 3, 2026.

How much drought relief has Karnataka sought?

Kharge’s October 3 appeal cited a Karnataka state request for ₹3,705.30 crore under the NDRF/SDRF framework. He set that request against estimated losses of ₹18,748.23 crore. Both figures are reported as part of Kharge’s account of the state’s request, not as independently verified estimates here.

Why is Karnataka seeking drought aid?

In his appeal, Kharge cited a 58% rainfall deficiency as of September, widespread crop losses and distress among farming families. Those are claims he raised to support the request for urgent assistance.

What did Kharge ask Modi to do?

Beyond releasing the requested funds, Kharge’s reported letter called for several steps affecting how drought damage and relief eligibility are handled:

  • Complete drought declarations for 11 additional taluks undergoing ground-truthing, as well as other qualifying areas.
  • Treat qualifying areas as one continuing drought event for central assistance.
  • Strengthen drinking-water security and provide substitute-power support.

Kharge framed relief as an issue that should transcend political differences: “Drought relief is a humanitarian imperative and must rise above political differences between the Centre and the State.”

Why do reports give different counts of affected taluks?

A same-day report said 177 taluks had been declared drought-affected, while the original ₹3,705.30 crore request covered 101 taluks. The counts refer to different stages in the declaration and assessment process: further ground-truthing was under way, so they should not be treated as competing totals for the same scope.

How does Kharge’s appeal differ from the earlier state request?

Kharge’s October 3 letter followed a separate appeal by Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. In a report published September 24, Shivakumar urged the Centre to release 50% of the same ₹3,705.30 crore request as interim aid. That earlier request came from the state government; Kharge’s later appeal pressed Modi for urgent central assistance and raised assessment and relief-administration measures.
