To make objects move between Keynote slides, duplicate a slide, change the objects’ positions or appearance on the copy, then apply Magic Move to the first slide. The transition animates objects shared by the two slides; it can also fade objects that appear on only one of them.
Build the two-slide starting point

Open the presentation and select the slide that will show the objects’ starting state. If it has no object to animate, add one, then select the slide again in the slide navigator.

Duplicate the selected slide with Command-D. Keynote places the duplicate immediately after the original. See Apple’s instructions for adding or deleting slides.

On the first slide, the duplicate, or both, move, resize, rotate, add, or remove objects to create the starting and ending states. For a clear movement effect, keep at least one object on both slides and change its position or appearance.

Apply and preview Magic Move

Select the first slide in the pair. In the Animate sidebar, click Add an Effect, then choose Magic Move. The transition is attached to that first slide and plays as the presentation advances from it to the next slide.

With the first slide selected, click Preview in the sidebar to inspect the transition. If the sidebar or control labels differ in your installation, use the transition controls shown for your Keynote version. Apple’s Magic Move instructions describe the effect and its settings.
Understand what moves, fades, or snaps into place
Keynote matches objects that appear on both slides and animates them between their states. An object found only on the first slide fades out by default; one found only on the second fades in. To make unmatched objects appear or disappear instantly instead, turn off Fade Unmatched Objects in the transition settings.

For text, the matching choice controls how finely Keynote pairs content across slides:

By Object: move the text box as a whole between positions.

By Word: match text at word level, which can make words appear to rearrange.

By Character: match individual characters, allowing letter-level rearrangement effects.

Tune timing, pacing, and start behavior

Duration: adjust the sidebar slider to make the transition shorter or longer.

Acceleration: choose None for constant speed, Ease In to slow near the destination, Ease Out to accelerate after departure, or Ease In & Ease Out to accelerate away and slow on approach. These are timing presets, not controls for physically simulated motion.

Start: choose On Click to advance the transition with a click, or Automatically to start it without a click; an automatic start can include a delay.
To replace or remove the transition, select the first slide, use Change in the Animate sidebar to choose another effect, or choose None.
Use Magic Move with video or 3D objects
Video continuing across slides
Magic Move can make a movie appear to continue playing and expand to fill the slide as the presentation advances. If playback does not continue across the slides, check that repeat settings match on both slides, that video trim settings match on Mac, and that a build out on one slide is not paired with a build in on the next. Apple notes that this build combination prevents the file from playing across slides. See Apple’s guidance on playing media across slides.

3D objects
Magic Move can create the appearance of a 3D object moving or rotating between slides. Keep compatibility in mind when sharing: Apple says 3D objects appear as 2D when the presentation is exported to another file format, opened in Keynote for iCloud, opened in Keynote 13.1 or earlier, or viewed in Preview. Check which Keynote version you use
Apple’s current Mac user guide identifies itself as the guide for Keynote 15.4 and says that version requires macOS 26 or later. That is version-specific information, not a requirement for every Keynote release. Consult the Keynote for Mac user guide for the controls and requirements applicable to your version.
