In StatCounter Global Stats’ worldwide September 2026 snapshot, Chrome leads browser market share at 66.36%, followed by Safari at 18.27% and Edge at 6.04%. Those figures can help prioritize QA, but they are not a test plan: teams should combine appropriately scoped usage data with their own visitor analytics, feature requirements, and browser-support policy.
Worldwide browser market share in September 2026
StatCounter Global Stats reports these browser market-share percentages worldwide for September 2026:
| Browser | Worldwide market share |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 66.36% |
| Safari | 18.27% |
| Edge | 6.04% |
| Firefox | 2.8% |
| Samsung Internet | 2.31% |
| Opera | 1.77% |
These are market-share figures, not the percentage of people who use each browser, the number of installed browsers, or a measure of how thoroughly a site has been tested. The cited snapshot does not provide full methodology details, so keep its geography, category, and date attached when reporting the numbers. StatCounter provides regional and platform breakdowns; use the country or region and device category that best match the audience you are planning for.
What these statistics can—and cannot—tell a QA team
Use share to inform priorities, not set coverage by itself
The worldwide ranking suggests Chrome deserves attention, with Safari and Edge also representing substantial shares in this snapshot. But it does not establish which browsers your own visitors use. A global, all-platform figure can conceal differences between markets and between mobile and desktop. Check your site’s analytics and support commitments before deciding which browser and operating-system combinations to test.

Market share is not feature compatibility
A browser’s share does not say whether it supports a particular CSS feature, JavaScript API, or other web technology. Compatibility is feature- and version-specific. MDN’s browser compatibility tables and Browser Compatibility Data provide information about support for shared web technologies. Can I Use also presents compatibility information; its surfaced usage table is based on StatCounter GlobalStats and showed August 2026 usage figures.
For features included in Baseline, web.dev offers this guidance: “When reading an article, or choosing a library for your project, if the features used are all part of Baseline, you can trust the level of browser compatibility.” Treat that as a signal about the compatibility of the features you use—not as proof that a product works correctly in every browser, or that browser-share figures guarantee compatibility.

How to build a browser QA matrix from the evidence
- Set the audience scope. Choose the regions and device categories that matter to your product. Where possible, use the corresponding StatCounter breakdown as context rather than substituting a worldwide all-platform figure.
- Review your own visitor analytics. Use your audience data to identify browsers and platforms that actually reach your site. The cited global snapshot cannot stand in for this information.
- List the features the product depends on. Identify the relevant HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web technologies, then check their browser support in MDN Browser Compatibility Data, MDN compatibility tables, or Can I Use.
- Apply your support policy and risk assessment. Decide which browser versions your team commits to supporting, and prioritize combinations where a failure would have the greatest effect on users. The cited sources do not prescribe a universal test matrix.
- Test the combinations that result. Validate the real product in the browser and operating-system environments that matter to your audience, features, and policy. Compatibility references help identify support questions; they do not replace product testing.
Where screenshots fit into browser QA
Screenshots can help teams review visual changes and preserve repeatable page captures, but a screenshot is not a substitute for testing interactions, accessibility, or browser-specific behavior. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its capture options include device and viewport settings, full-page capture, element capture by CSS selector, and dark mode; use the environment choices that match the browser QA work you are documenting.
For a simple capture request, replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to capture and supply your API key:

How to report browser statistics responsibly
- Put the geography, platform scope, source, and date beside every market-share figure—for example, “worldwide, September 2026.”
- Do not label market share a browser-support score or infer the browser mix of a particular site from a global snapshot.
- Separate usage evidence from feature-support evidence: use audience analytics and usage breakdowns to prioritize environments, and compatibility references to investigate technologies.
- Do not claim that a global ranking requires a universal set of browsers to test. The appropriate matrix depends on audience, features, and support policy.
