Keeper is a strong password manager for people who want detailed security controls and flexible sharing, but it is not the best fit if you want a generous free plan or breach monitoring and file storage included in the price. The free option reviewed by Security.org and Tom’s Guide is limited to one mobile device and ten password or passkey records; Keeper’s paid extras also make the full cost harder to judge from a base-plan price alone.

This review covers Keeper as it stood in the September 2026 product context, using information checked through October 7, 2026. Current plan prices vary by region and offer, so check the price and renewal terms shown at checkout before subscribing.

What Keeper Password Manager does well—and where it falls short

Keeper’s main strengths are its security-focused design, authentication options, apps, and sharing tools. Independent reviewers have praised its security documentation and sharing, while flagging costs and paid add-ons. Its key trade-offs are a sharply limited free plan and extra charges for features such as dark-web monitoring and expanded secure file storage.

That makes Keeper a better match for people who value granular controls and secure sharing than for someone shopping primarily for the lowest-cost password manager. Its usefulness also depends on how well autofill works on the sites and devices you use: Tom’s Guide reports occasional email-field detection quirks.

How Keeper says it protects your vault

Keeper describes its system as zero-knowledge: it says end-user data is encrypted and decrypted at the device and record level, rather than on Keeper’s servers. Its security documentation describes AES-256 record and folder keys generated on the client device, and says vault records can contain logins, attachments, TOTP codes, payment details, URLs, and custom fields. It also says its master-password derivation uses PBKDF2 with 1,000,000 iterations. These are Keeper’s published technical descriptions, not an independent verification of its implementation. Keeper’s documentation also describes FIPS 140-3 validation and quarterly penetration testing by external experts. Those statements should be understood as the company’s published claims; the linked page is not the underlying validation listing or a report detailing the testing scope.

Encryption can reduce the risk of a server-side exposure revealing readable vault contents, but it cannot eliminate every risk. An infected device, phishing attack, weak account-recovery process, or implementation flaw can still matter. A zero-knowledge description is not a promise that an account is unhackable, nor proof that no incident has ever occurred.

If you want a physical second factor, a FIDO2 security key is a possible accessory category, not a required Keeper purchase. Keeper’s general support statement does not establish that a particular key model works on every operating system or browser. Confirm compatibility for your platform in Keeper’s current guidance before buying one.

Is Keeper easy to use across devices?

Keeper offers apps and access across platforms, and Tom’s Guide lists offline access and emergency recovery tools among its strengths. For everyday use, the practical test is whether the app reliably recognizes login fields, fills credentials, and syncs on the devices you actually use. Tom’s Guide reports occasional autofill detection issues with email fields, so expect that some logins may require selecting or entering a saved record manually. Tom’s Guide

Keeper’s own announcement reports that CHIP tested nine password managers across Android, iOS, and Windows, assigning Keeper an overall score of 1.3, a security score of 1.1, and a usability score of 1.0. The announcement says the test weighted Security at 50%, Usability at 30%, and Features at 20%. These are CHIP results as reported by Keeper, not figures verified here against the complete CHIP test report. A favorable test score is useful context, but it does not erase the real-world autofill caveat. Keeper’s announcement of the CHIP test

If you need to use Keeper on more than one device or store more than a handful of credentials, that free tier is likely to be restrictive. Security.org describes the Unlimited plan as providing unlimited password storage, sharing, and encrypted cloud backup; check Keeper’s live plan page for the current feature list before choosing a subscription. Security.org’s Keeper review

What costs extra, and how should you assess value?

Security.org, WIRED, and Cybernews report that BreachWatch dark-web monitoring and expanded secure file storage are paid extras rather than benefits to assume are included with a base subscription. Published price snapshots vary by source and date, so an old annual figure should not be treated as a current universal price. Security.org, WIRED, and Cybernews

To compare Keeper fairly with another manager, calculate the annual total for the features you would actually use, including add-ons, then check the renewal amount and terms for your region. A low introductory offer can be less meaningful if the renewal price or necessary extras change the total. WIRED’s review is from 2025, so its price references are historical rather than current quotes. WIRED’s 2025 review

Who should choose Keeper?

  • Consider Keeper if you value detailed security controls, multiple authentication methods, and flexible sharing, and you are comfortable checking add-on and renewal costs.
  • Look elsewhere or compare carefully if you need a free plan that syncs across several devices, want breach monitoring or substantial file storage included, or prioritize the lowest total annual cost.
  • Try the autofill workflow before relying on it if you often sign in through email fields or unusual login forms; an independent review has reported occasional detection quirks.

Keeper’s strongest case is not that it is the cheapest option or universally best. It is that its security and sharing feature set can suit users who will make use of those controls and accept the plan limitations and paid extras.
