The issue, CVE-2023-32784, was fixed in KeePass 2.54. The official KeePass downloads page lists version 2.61.1 as of October 4, 2026; check that page for the current release and update if you use an affected version.
What CVE-2023-32784 exposed
The vulnerability affected the original KeePass application’s 2.x versions before 2.54. Under the conditions described in the advisory, someone with a relevant memory dump could recover the cleartext master password except for its first character. The advisory rates the issue high severity and assigns it a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5 out of 10. GitHub Advisory Database: CVE-2023-32784
The proof-of-concept author explained that KeePass 2.x’s custom password-entry control could leave strings behind as a password was typed. The .NET memory-management behavior involved made those remnants difficult to remove, and the proof of concept searched a memory dump for patterns that could reveal them. Could someone recover it while KeePass was locked or closed?
Potentially, yes. The advisory says the password could be recovered from a relevant dump even if the KeePass workspace had been locked or the application was no longer running. Possible sources included a KeePass process dump, Windows pagefile or system swap file, hibernation file, crash dump, or RAM dump. Locking the workspace or closing KeePass did not necessarily remove remnants already captured in those artifacts. GitHub Advisory Database: CVE-2023-32784

Was this a remote internet attack?
The described technique analyzes a memory dump; the vulnerability alone does not establish that an attacker could steal a password remotely over the internet. The proof-of-concept author said code execution on the target was not required if a dump was already available. The central concern is therefore whether someone could access the device or its memory artifacts—not simply whether KeePass was installed or used online. Original proof-of-concept repository
Which users and applications were affected?
The advisory names the original KeePass 2.x application before version 2.54. The proof-of-concept author reported testing KeePass 2.53.1 on Windows and KeePass 2.47 on Debian; those are the author’s reported tests, not independent test results. The author also clarified that the remnant-string exposure described involved a password typed on a keyboard, rather than one copied from a clipboard. Original proof-of-concept repository

This finding should not be generalized to KeePassXC or every application that can open a KeePass database. KeePassXC is a separate application, and the cited advisory concerns KeePass 2.x; database compatibility alone does not show that another app has this vulnerability.
Which KeePass version fixes the vulnerability?
KeePass 2.54 fixed CVE-2023-32784. Its official release announcement recommended upgrading from any previous 2.x version. The official downloads page lists KeePass 2.61.1 as of October 4, 2026, so use that page to check the latest available version rather than relying on an older version number in an article. The downloads page offers an installer and portable ZIP, and lists Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11, plus Mono-supported Linux, macOS, and BSD systems and x86, x64, and ARM64 architectures. Download through the official page. If you are able to verify the file, compare its hash or OpenPGP signature with the release data on KeePass’s official integrity page.

- Update KeePass. Get the current release from the official downloads page. Version 2.54 is the fix; the site listed 2.61.1 on October 4, 2026.
- Review settings after upgrading if you rely on them. KeePass 2.54 changed how some settings are stored. With the setup EXE or MSI, triggers, global URL overrides, and password-generator profiles may be disabled if they were not stored in the enforced configuration file. Review the release notes and re-enable only the settings you want. - Decide whether further cleanup is warranted. Consider whether someone could have accessed your device or old process dumps, crash dumps, hibernation files, or page/swap files. For long-time users or people with a higher concern about local or forensic access, changing the master password and removing relevant old artifacts may be reasonable precautions. The proof-of-concept author presents these as threat-model-dependent options, not requirements for every user. Original proof-of-concept repository
Deleting an artifact does not guarantee that its contents have been securely erased from storage. The available guidance does not make reinstalling the operating system, overwriting storage, or deleting system files a standard response to this vulnerability.
