Kdenlive 25.12.0 focused on making the video editor easier to organize and navigate, rather than introducing a new editing engine. Its main changes were flexible docking with project-saved layouts, a Welcome Screen, tools for vertical-video workflows, reorganized menus, audio-monitor navigation and timeline markers. The release is now historical: as of October 4, 2026, KDE’s listing shows Kdenlive 26.08.1 as the current version, so check the official Kdenlive page for current installation guidance.
What’s new in Kdenlive 25.12?
The Kdenlive team described 25.12 as a user-experience release. The team announced version 25.12.0 on December 18, 2025; KDE’s Applications release listing records it on December 11. Those dates refer to the announcement and the listing, respectively. The release announcement is available on Kdenlive’s 25.12.0 release page.
Flexible docking and workspaces saved with projects
The new docking system lets editors group widgets, show or hide them, and save workspace layouts. Layouts are saved with a project, so reopening that project restores its workspace. This is useful when a project depends on a particular arrangement of panels, but it comes with a migration caveat: custom layouts created in earlier versions are incompatible with the new system and need to be recreated.
Welcome Screen and reorganized menus
A new Welcome Screen provides an entry point for first-time users and shortcuts for returning editors. The release also grouped file-related actions, including Render and Project Settings, under the File menu. Long-time users may need to adjust to the menu changes.

Vertical-video workflow aids
Kdenlive added a vertical editing layout and optional safe areas to support 9:16 projects. These help arrange the editing workspace and judge framing; they do not automatically reframe footage or guarantee that an export is ready for a particular platform.
Audio monitor and timeline markers
The audio monitor gained an overview or minimap that lets editors zoom into portions of audio. Timeline “guides” were renamed “markers” to reduce terminology confusion. Markers can have a duration displayed on the timeline, and editors can drag them from the Markers list.

How should existing users approach the new docking system?
Projects can now carry their workspace layout, but an existing custom layout does not transfer to the new docking system. If you rely on a carefully arranged setup, plan to rebuild it after updating rather than expecting the old layout to appear unchanged. The Kdenlive team explicitly noted that custom layouts need recreation in its release announcement.
What fixes and technical updates did the release include?
The Kdenlive team said version 25.12 fixed more than 15 reported crash issues, addressed a Windows rendering failure involving usernames with special characters, and corrected a project-corruption issue related to copied sequences or project files. The announcement also reported a VAAPI fix in the AppImage for faster decoding and rendering, and listed Qt 6.10.1 and FFmpeg 8.0 among the binary updates. These are release-note claims; the announcement does not provide a performance benchmark.

At launch, the team said some last-minute fixes were already present in the 25.12.0 binaries on kdenlive.org, while Linux distribution users would receive them in 25.12.1, then scheduled for January 2026. That was a launch-time packaging note, not current installation advice.
What did later 25.12 maintenance releases change?
The 25.12.3 announcement, published March 9, 2026, called it the final maintenance release in the 25.12 series. It highlighted docking behavior, fullscreen shortcut handling, marker-menu organization, an option to disable timeline effects, multistream clip handling, ripple editing and stability fixes. Its note that macOS packages would be delayed described the situation at that time and should not be read as a statement about current availability. Is Kdenlive 25.12 still the current version?
No. KDE Applications’ live Kdenlive listing showed version 26.08.1, dated September 10, 2026, on October 4, 2026. The listing places it above the 25.12 maintenance versions; because the live version can change, check the official Kdenlive listing before installing.
